UN DEUXIÈME VOYAGE HUMANITAIRE EN
RÉPUBLIQUE DOMINICAINE

Coming in January
The English version will follow.

mienne.
MY SECOND HUMANITARIAN TRIP TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
In 2010, the Nova Scotia Lifesaving Society established a partnership with The Canadian Embassy in the Dominican Republic to assist
them in teaching first aid, skills, rescue techniques and swimming.
This program is in its 8th year, and is offered to people who work in the tourism industry in Punta Cana.
This year there were five volunteer instructors in Punta Cana. Cheri Kelly (Bridgewater), Conor Edwards (Halifax), Stephanie Jackson
(Lake Echo), Adrian Spencer (Wentworth) there for the 5th time, and myself
The training was three and half days; the participants were taught and practiced swimming, lifesaving techniques, skills and first aid.
They were taught to recognize and assist people in distress in an aquatic environment; after all how can you resist an island surrounded
by a warm blue ocean? The more we train and educate, the better we can prevent and reduce the large number of drownings. At the
end of the program some of the participants will have completed Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and First Aid.
There have been many advancements between my first trip in 2012 and 4 years later. The creation of a Caribbean Lifesaving Society;
Macao surf beach now has guard towers and trained lifeguards. This beach has strong and large waves with lots of rip currents. There
are often situations that require 5 or 6 rescues a day, what would you think if this was happening at a beach in Nova Scotia???. There
was a group trained in leadership and they helped us out the second week. This year we had the presence of 5 female participants and
one in the leadership program. This is certainly a first.
There are many success stories to prove that the program is making a difference and the one that touched me the most and made me
so proud to be a part of this program is the following:
On my first trip a 12-year-old Dominican boy who hung out at the Macao surf camp was watching us doing some training, he was very
interested in what we were doing. A few days later while on his boogie board he saw a person in distress in the water, caught in a rip
current. He used his boogie board without putting his life in jeopardy and came to the rescue of the distressed person and brought him
safely back to the beach. This young boy is now 17 years old, working as a surf instructor and participated in the advanced lifesaving
training.
At the end of the training there is an award ceremony hosted by the Canadian Consul Steve Côté. He awarded nearly 80 certifications
to the participants and he thanked the many partners who are part of the success of this program such as the Club Imagine (the
ceremony host), WestJet vacations, The Palladium hotel and resorts for their pool, Paradisus which provides us room and board, GO
Golf for our transportation, Macao surf Camp, the Centro Médico Punta Cana and the hotels and tourism associations of Punta Cana.
It was so rewarding to see in the faces of the participants their pride and joy for their accomplishments when receiving their
certifications. It was a trip where we know we made a difference in their lives and them in ours.
