Carrés Sons
Among coloured squares, two musicians are building sound tales to be heard and seen. Let’s
have a skiing journey with a double bass (and reversed). Let’s stay a while in a Siberian station
with a musical saw. Let’s have a rest at night under blinking stars with an home-made kora…
Musicians blow, scratch, beat
the instruments they play. Sound
patterns and images are layers
forming egnigmatic scapes. A digital
brass band is passing, toothbrushes
are dancing, fingers on instruments
are playing strange sounds.
Instruments appear like shadows
and we are listenning by eye and
ear these funny home-made sounds
from a mandoline, various weird
objects or videogame joysticks.
Carrés Sons leads us in a sensitive
world where musics are responding
to images on frames in a poetic
journey. Sounds put life to objects in
this vivid concert and images spread
out of sounds. Wild instruments (very home-made) are in harmony with classical or digital music instruments
and lead us through fascinating surrounding soundscapes.
A playful and poetic performance
The duet La corde à vent proposes with Carrés sons a shape without words, which associates the
poetry of sounds to the objects and musical instruments’.
In this world, sounds arise from elements of the daily life.
The musical use of an object arouses some surprise, the laughter
or a poetic distortion, and leads the audience to unexpected sound
landscapes.
The musicians interpret a musical and visual score, among which the
rhythm and the contrasts reveal a «sound journey» for eyes and ears.
The artistic staff centres its researches on oppositions and contrasts
such as relationships between big and small, hidden and visible, in front
of and behind, in shadow and in light, acoustic and amplified, visible to
the naked eye or visible on a screen, mechanical and digital.
Wild mechanical instrument industry
Resarches in wild mechanical
instrument industry are focused
on serigraphy frame. These frames
produce
amazing
resonance
chambers played as drums, make
objects resonating, amplify wood or
steel bars, amplify the instruments
strings… Serigraphy frames are
usuallly made for text & image
printing on posters, books or on
objects.
Those which are used during
performances, useless or too old,
came from factories. They are
restored with hanging on their
synthetic skin transparency adhesive
tape. Frames are then used like
drums with rich and colored tones.
Digital instrument industry
Researches on digital instrument industry
are focused on video games joystick
diversion. Softwares and patches are
specially designed for live performance
using the Usine Hollyhock modulary
program. They allow to set and transform
the sound of voice, usual instruments
and wild instruments. Computer will be
remote controlled by the differents parts
of the performer’s body:
- by feet, with the « dance pad » ( intercative video dancepads)
- by hands, with the Leap Motion System which reacts to the light fingers movements suggesting a sound castellet
which can be seen on screen by the audience.
- by the whole body by using the Kinect camera reacting with arms, legs and head movements. Each part of the body
can me synchronized with a tone which change according to the performer’s movements. The Kinect camera is also
used to play virtual percussions, all around the musician. It uses the theater PA system and a specific PA system
integrated to the set.
Magic Lanterns
The magic lantern is at the beginning of the projectors and
specially of slide projector. Designed by the astronomer Christian
Huygens in the 17th Century it allowed to project through a lens
on glass screens painted images enlighted by a candle or an oil
lamp. First been named by its creator « Fear lantern» and after
many given names, the Jesuit Francesco Eschinardi called it
« magic lantern » because of the fascination occured by the
images on audience.
During the show Carrés Sons magic lanterns are depicted
through two sets:
−shadow casting with objects on screens reminding
mechanical instruments and objects diversion to put on stage
home-made poetic landscapes
−projecting images with a VP and a computer, evocating digital instruments and the use of numerical technologies
to create poetic worlds according to the musicians’ play.
Amplifying soungs and magnifying objets
We are using acoustic instruments with natural sound.
So we are with small objects and digital systems rich of
potential but with tiny sounds which need to be amplified.
Some other small objects are amplified to bring up them to
stage, magnified by a video camera which permits them to be
screened, to be integrated to the performance.
Enlighting
Discrete shape lighting is used to focus musicians
and objects. Live shadows projection is made on
serigraphy frame in order to perform on what is
obvious and what is hidden. Some spotlights are
used in front scene in specific theatres.

L’Arbre Canapas
Formed in 2004, L’Arbre Canapas (Canapas Tree, from Henri Michaux novel Ailleurs) is a
collective of Jazz musicians creating music, and leading education and community programs
together. Our music is a crossover inspired by jazz, world music and new music.
A musician gathering
Each band develops a unique relationship with music
communities. L’éléfanfare is an outdoor orchestra for everyone,
which turns streets and common places into surprising concert
hall. La Corde à Vent creates performances for young people.
It’s surprising and creative music blends traditional musical
instruments with inventions out of everyday objects (wild lute).
L’effet de Foehn offers to everyone, musical enlightened or
not, young and adult audiences, a contemporary composition
based on musical and visual landscapes. The quartet La Table
de Mendeleïev offers adventurous and explosive compositions,
shaking up Bunsen burners. Nadja is a bass clarinet sextet
performing André Breton’s fantasy. TTTW is a new and
original re-reading of the Who’s compositions by six multiinstrumentalist musicians.
