Renato Meucci, born in 1958, studied guitar and horn at the conservatories of Rome and Milan and
classical philology at the University of Rome. After working as a free-lance horn player for some ten
years, he turned to musicology and published papers on history, archeology, iconography, performance
practice, and musical instruments in books and journals in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England,
Austria, France, Spain and the United States. He is also the author of Strumentaio, a unique book on the
history of musical instrument making in the Western tradition (2nd ed., Venice: 2010).
Meucci has been teaching History of musical instruments as invited professor at the University of
Parma (1994-2000) and Milan (2001-present) and, as full professor, music history at the conservatory
“G. Cantelli” of Novara, where he has assumed the position of dean in 2011.
The American Musical Instrument Society has presented him with the Curt Sachs Award 2012, the
most distinguished international recognition in organological scholarship.

aux conservatoires de Rome et de Milan et la philologie classique à l'Université de Rome, il a
travaillé en tant que joueur de cor indépendant pendant une dizaine d'années ; après il se tourna vers
la musicologie, l’organologie et l’histoire de l’execution musicale en publiant plus qu’une centaine
des études en plusieurs langues et en différents pays. Il est aussi l'auteur de Strumentaio, un livre
unique sur l'histoire de la fabrication d'instruments de musique dans la tradition occidentale (2e éd,
Venise 2010). En 2012 il a reçu, pour son longue activité de recherche, le prestigieux "Curt Sachs
Award" assigné par la American Musical Instrument Society.

Horn und an der Universität Rom Altphilologie. Nach eine zehn-jährige Aktivität als free-lance
Hornspieler mit den besten Italienischen Orchestern spezialisierte sich auf die Geschichte, und
Aufführungspraxis der Musikinstrumente sowie auf die Aufführungsbedingungen der Musik in
Italien in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten. Darüber veröffentlichte er mehr als hundert Beiträge in
Sammelbänden und Zeitschriften auf Italienisch, Englisch, Französisch, Deutsch und Spanisch. Er
ist auch der Verfasser von Strumentaio ein einzigartiges Buch über die Geschichte des
Musikinstrumentenbaus in der westlichen Tradition (2. Auflage, Venedig 2010). Er war Gastdozent
für „Geschichte der Musikinstrumente“ an der Universität Parma (1994-2000) und Mailand (2001bis heute), sowie auch Professor für „Musikgeschichte“ an der Musikhochschule „G. Cantelli“ in
Novara, wo seit Ende 2011 ist er der Vorsitzer. Die American Musical Instrument Society hat ihm
den „Curt Sachs“ Preis für 2012 verliehen.
