AFSEC – IECEx International Seminar
The African Electrotechnical Standardization Commission (AFSEC) and the International
Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards relating to Equipment
for Use in Explosive Atmospheres (IECEx) in collaboration with the African Energy
Commission (AFREC), l’Office Congolais de Contrôle (OCC), in partnership with the
Katanga mining authorities and Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, the governor of the Katanga
Province, organize an international event for the benefit of Africa.
Topic
Certification to IEC International Standards relating to electrical equipment and services in
explosive atmospheres, specifically in mines.
Date
8–9 September 2014 in Lubumbashi, Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo
This two day seminar will be a unique opportunity for mining industries using electrical
equipment on the African continent to discover and familiarize themselves with the
benefits of using IEC conformity assessment system in explosive atmospheres.
Location
Grand Karavia Hotel, Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Purpose
The seminar aims at
•
•
•
•
Capacity building for African experts from the mining and electrical sectors,
Learning to apply three IEC International Standards relating to the certification of
electrical equipment and services in explosive atmospheres,
Practical exercises on the site of an open-pit mine,
Optimising the process of drafting an evaluation report.

Contents
The technical presentations will deal with daily problems participants are confronted with
when using equipment in explosive atmospheres including issues of area classification
and the inspection and maintenance of electrical installations.
The seminar will therefore focus on the three following International Standards:
• IEC 60079-10-1 Explosive atmospheres - Part 10-1: Classification of areas - Explosive
gas atmospheres
• IEC 60079-10-2 Explosive atmospheres - Part 10-2: Classification of areas Combustible dust atmospheres
• IEC 60079-17: Explosive atmospheres - Part 17: Electrical installations inspection and
maintenance
The agenda for the seminar is as follows:
Day 1: Implementation of IEC International Standards 60079-10-1, 60079-10-2 and 60079-17
in classroom layout
Day 2: Site inspection with practical exercises, report and explanation of findings
Target audience
The seminar will address experts, senior staff and professionals from the mining and
electrical sectors on the African continent who are involved in the standardization,
manufacturing, inspection, repair, exploitation, maintenance and overhaul of equipment.
Organization of the seminar
There will be two sessions of 40 participants each, in English and in French
The number of participants being limited, we would ask participants to register early,
particularly for those who absolutely must attend the training in French.
The seminar will be conducted by two IECEx experts, Michel Brénon (French group) and
Paul Meanwell (English group), who will

make presentations,
carry out site audits with the participants,
share their experience and knowledge,
answer questions to meet the needs of the participants, and
provide participants with advice, information and background material.
