(…) "Directed towards the aficionados of contemporary forms, Fernando Martín’s latest creation aims to stress all the company’s talents. We find ourselves in front of three pieces of different styles, and different headcount. (…) » The first piece refers to Sophie Calle’s universe (…) A solo close to performance (…) A witty twinkle, brilliantly performed by dancer Sarah Piccinelli, accompanied by a sophisticated and refined technological deployment, as much for the visual aspects as for the sound aspects. The second part (…), an abstract piece for four dancers. The stage is empty, only rhythmically structured by the lighting, the music and the movement. (…) Finally, the third piece, the zaniest one, the most unbridled, the funniest too, for two dancers. It stages kitsch, surrealism, disparity..." Take the desire to work simultaneously on a solo, a quartet and a duo; each one for the same piece, but with a different approach. Subsequently add a choreographic language. Examine it carefully and extract three major driving forces: a taste for autobiographical and theatrical topics; an appetite for the “undiluted” complexity of choreographic movement; and a tendency to toy with parasitic blinks flavoured with some grains of unseemliness. Once these driving forces are appointed, work each one out into a short piece, whose respective ingredients answer the original intention: solo, quartet, duo. To avoid an amalgam of ingredients, mind the use of distinct condiments for each recipe: a few pinches of modus operandi à la Sophie Calle, a bouquet garni of Itten’s and Kandinsky’s pictorial abstractions, and a generous handful of surrealistic sequences à la La Novida. Leave to simmer slowly until total emulation. Serve all dishes together during the same choreographic dinner, like a food combining diet, but definitely signed Fuepalbar Cie / Fernando Martín! Each piece of this triptych can be presented separately or in a combination of two or three. Production asbl 3 Ax/Fuepalbar Cie. A performance act, where the “I” intermingles with fiction. A solo gravitating around the notion of “beliefs”. A notion sketched from different angles, with Sarah Piccinelli as Leitmotif (the woman and the interpreter) and Sophie Calle’s artistic explorations as a multiground fertilizer: some of her works, her relationship to memory and reality, her way of leaving the drama of her works to random fate or actions/rules imposed by others. This solo is dedicated to Sarah’s father. © photo Viktor Gil Chorégraphie Choreography Fernando Martín | Création et interprétation Creation and interpretation Sarah Piccinelli | Textes Texts Olivier Hespel, Sarah Piccinelli | Dramaturgie Dramaturgy Olivier Hespel | Collaboration artistique, scénographie et images Artistic collaboration, set design and images Peter Maschke | Musique originale Original music George De Decker | Lumières Lighting Marc Lhommel | Costumes Costumes Patty Eggerickx & Friends. An abstract dance piece (a choreography composed without any intentional drama content), in other words, a scenic object with as sole stake between its four interpreters, an encounter with four scores: movement, space, lighting and music. To join this double quartet, two painters, and two different views of colour: Johannes Itten and Wassily Kandinsky; I.K., to be precise. The first one, with his "objective" (if not scientific) rules of composition; the second one, with his poetic and spiritual curiosity regarding colours. As a result, a piece in four – more or less distinct – movements, that freely roams through Kandinsky’s universe and the atmospheres of his work. © photo Charlotte Sampermans Chorégraphie Choreography Fernando Martín | Création et interprétation Creation and interpretation Laura Mas-Sauri, Nitay Lehrer, Barthélémy Manias-Valmont, Fernando Martín | Dramaturgie Dramaturgy Olivier Hespel | Collaboration artistique et scénographie Artistic collaboration and set design Peter Maschke | Musique originale Original music George De Decker | Lumières Lighting Jean-Jacques Deneumoustier | Costumes Costumes Friends. A duo for men. A “zapping” piece around incongruity, surprise, disparity and kitsch. A patchwork-like construction, which draws its atmospheres from the culture of the 80’s and in the libertarian energy of La Movida, to eventually move towards other inspirations equally unrestrained. © photo Viktor Gil Chorégraphie Choreography Fernando Martín | Création et interprétation Creation and interpretation Barthélémy Manias-Valmont, Fernando Martín | Dramaturgie Dramaturgy Olivier Hespel | Collaboration artistique et scénographie Artistic collaboration and set design Peter Maschke | Musique originale Original music George De Decker | Lumières Lighting Marc Lhommel | Costumes Costumes Patty Eggerickx & Friends. Pour arriver aujourd’hui à une nouvelle création : So call me I.K. Created in 1996 by Fernando Martín and Monica Martí Aguiar, Fuepalbar Cie quickly developed a unique identity by blending ludic playfulness with abstraction, “popular” or traditional dances with contemporary dance. Together they create Te Forras (1996), Bubulebetó (1997) and ¿ Pero que dice, Tolgaz ? (1998). Fernando Martín then continues to explore this dance of contrasts on his own, drawing as much from poetry and humor, as from physical power and interiority. He first creates Mismorigen (1999), an utterly ludic performance brought by himself and his brother Julián, juxtaposing flamenco and contemporary dance through the theme of brotherhood (rewarded with the SACD prize for choreographic production). Followed by Ten-Sueño (2002), a quartet on the boundaries of theater and dance, pain and desire, the whole deeply imbued with a baroque aesthetic. Mordre à travers (2004), is a trio in which he explores in a more radical manner the abstraction of his language, and also a certain darkness or gloomy intensity. Whereas Drink your wine in my glass (2006) gathers, between the two interpreters, all the characteristics of his signature (nomination for the Theatre and Dance prize 2006). In 2007, another duo sees the light, this time with a quite different tint (more surrealistic, light-hearted), with singer-musician Carmen ‘La Molinera’: Ensimismados. Bringing us to today’s new project: So call me I.K. & Friends, a performance in three parts, for five interpreters. Fernando Martín was born in 1963, in La Mancha, Spain. After his studies of ballet and modern dance in Spain and Brussels (Mudra school), he successively worked with the companies Ballet of Barcelona, Dart Cia de Dansa and Teatro del Liceo. In 1989, he returns to Belgium to first join the company Archipel Sud. In 1991, he then joins Pierre Droulers’ company, and between 1992 and 1995, he dances for José Besprovany. Together with Mònica Martí Aguiar, he then founds the company Fuepalbar Cie MartíMartín, with whom he creates several pieces. In the meantime Fernando Martin creates his own solo ¿ Pero que dice, Tolgaz ?. All the while, he pursues his training with a.o. Trisha Brown (1993) and Julyen Hamilton (1998), not to forget his many talents as a performer that he continues to put at the disposal of other choreographers, such as Alexander Barvoets, Eric Raeves, Bud Blumenthal and José Besprosvany... By the end of the 90’s, he also approaches other facets of the stage: as a choreographer for a musical based on the lyrics of Jacques Brel and directed by Andrew Wale (Anonymous Society, 1998); as a staging assistant for José Besprosvany’s Prométhée enchaîné, adapted by Henry Bauchau and based on Eschyle at the Théâtre du Rideau in Brussels (1998); and also as a choreographer for the operas Mahagonny Songspiel and Happy End, by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil, directed by Ian Burton (Antwerpen - Maastricht, 1999). Since then, he divides his time between his own creations and his teaching activities. He also continues to work on other artists’ projects: as a choreographic assistant and repetitor for the choreographer Michèle Noiret in the creation of Territoires intimes (2004), and later as a dancer in Les Arpenteurs (2008); as assistant and performer for José Besprosvany in the creation 9 (2007-2008), and as a dancer in the piece A propos de Butterfly (2009-2010). (…) So call me…, solo, avait ouvert une jolie brèche, personnelle, sensible. » "An eclectic and vivid creation by Fernando Martín (…) From our perspective, the most evident link can be found in the universe of visual arts. This appears clearly in the second piece, the quartet Quadricromia en I.K. (…) On stage, Laura Mas Sauri, Barthélémy Manias, Nitay Lehrer and Fernando Martín develop worlds carried by colours without prevailing, forcefully inhabited by George De Decker’s music. (…) So call me…, the solo, had opened a nice path, intimate, sensitive. The quartet – also clearly labeled by the characters that composed it – tied in, full of lively and pure dance. (…) Finally, for the duet - Le rêve parallèle & pour après -, Barthélémy Manias and Fernando Martín appear there where a furtive nun has spread objects. Stiletto heels, blazing manes, stirring music make an Almodovarlike atmosphere, burlesque kitsch. The continuation: zany, eccentric, we should dare to say if this word was not so hackneyed (…) A generous craziness."
