If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, you may feel overwhelmed trying to maintain holiday traditions while caregiving. If you feel anger, guilt, or frustration during or after the holidays, it may help to know that these feelings are normal and that you are not alone. Holidays do not have to be filled with sadness. By preparing in advance and helping to prepare others, the holidays may be joyful once again. Here are some holiday tips for the person living with Alzheimer’s disease and the caregiver. Tips for the person living with Alzheimer’s disease; • • • • • Include the person in activities that are meaningful to him/her Understand what memories from the past may trigger. Focus on positive memories Play Christmas carols softly Keep noise levels to a minimum. Celebrate early in the day to reduce the likelihood of sundowning. Keep the lights on to keep the room bright. Tips for the caregiver: • • • • • Try to maintain your usual routine as much as possible Keep on a regular sleep schedule for both of you. Fatigue for either can cause a decrease in functioning. Set realistic goals and expectations for yourself Permit yourself to go to events that the person with Alzheimer’s disease cannot attend. Respite is available through the Alzheimer Society to ensure that you can enjoy your friends and family even if the person is unable to participate. Be your own “Santa Claus”. You, of all people, deserve a very big treat. Roberta, Cuisinière du Health Bistro Santé 10 Société Alzheimer Society Newsletter / Infolettre December Décembre 2015 Société Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay and districts is proud to be one of 41 North-East Health Care Service Providers Designated under the French Language Services Act. November 16, 2015 was a very important day for Société Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay & districts. On that day, the Society’s board members together with the Executive Director, Mrs. Lorraine LeBlanc, participated in the celebration of 400 years of francophone presence in Ontario and represented the Society amongst 41 North-East health care providers designated under the French Language Services Act. The Society has received the designation under the French Language Services Act 8 years ago. Practically speaking, since 2007, it has been Society’s legal duty to provide its services and programs in both official languages. Being able to serve its clients in both English and French is, according to the Society, a necessary means to providing good customer service. Indeed, the Office of French Services Language Commissioner informs that 26.7% of Sudbury district’s population and 25% of Nipissing district’s population are Francophones. What is more, 28.8% habitants of Greater Sudbury are French speaking. That is why the Society is proudly bilingual and offers its services and programs to alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and to improve the quality of life of its clients, their families and caregivers in English and in French. We are proud of our French speaking designation and are happy to help in both official languages now and in the future! Increasingly, notfor-profit organizations rely on the dedication of volunteers who, for a number of reasons, work diligently in making a difference. The Volunteer of the Year Award 2015 recognizes one outstanding volunteer for their valuable and selfless commitment to dedication, contribution to the building of a strong organization, awareness for our cause and enhancement of the efficiencies needed to meet the increasing needs of our mission. It is my pleasure to recognize Mr. Doug Taylor and to provide you with a short overview of his successes. Doug worked for Inco as a geologist. We has been married for 48 years to his wife Noni and raised two sons whom also have given him 3 grandchildren. A lifelong volunteer, Doug started with the Scout movement. When Doug retired he went on to work part time with Lougheed’s and got involved with the Alzheimer Society becoming its president over 25 years ago. He continued following 4 terms on the Board of Directors, to then participate in working committees. He has seen the growth and challenges that a not-for-profit organization encounters. His ongoing commitment to the Society is a model for us all. I recently met Doug to discuss on why he continues to be engaged. Being a humble man, Doug stated that his greatest achievement was being part of the Capital Campaign and raising funds for the renovations of the present space the Alzheimer Society holds at the Pioneer Manor campus. As the director of the Alzheimer Society for the last 5 years, I have been honored to know Doug and have him on our Human Resource committee. He has been Society’s historian and provided us with much wisdom on many challenges we have faced. Hats off to the greatest volunteer of the year!!
