Mai Thai is Associate Professor at the International Business Department, HEC
Montreal. Her expertise is in entrepreneurship, qualitative methods and
emerging economies.
Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Hanoi
University of Foreign Studies, Vietnam (1998), a Masters of Business
Administration (MBA) from University of Hawaii, United States (2003), and a
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in International Management from University of
St. Gallen, Switzerland (2008).
Dr. Thai joined HEC Montreal in 2009, after working as an assistant professor
at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a lecturer in several higher education institutions in Switzerland
and Vietnam. Prior to her academic career, she was an entrepreneur and journalist in Vietnam until 2001.
Throughout her career, she has won several awards for her performance and commitment: As an
entrepreneur (First Prize and Social Enterprise Award for her birding business), as a teacher (AlmaLepage Award for the best case on business women and Pedagocial Innovation for the design of
International Graduate Competition, a coopetition aimed at better teaching masters’ student and
knowledge transfer to business communities) and as a researcher (Distinguished Scholar, Best Paper, Best
Presenter, Matson Prize for the quality of her research).
For the last few years, she has been researching the link between entrepreneurship and its socioeconomic,
cultural and political contexts. Specifically, she examines how these contexts influence the
internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups, entrepreneurial motivations and
migration of entrepreneurs. Besides her work at HEC Montreal, she is an associate researcher at the Asia
Research Centre of the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. She is also an editorial board member of
Reflective Practice and Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development as well as
a guest editor of Journal of Enterprising Communities, International Journal of Business Globalization,
and Journal of Innovation Economics.
Dr. Thai has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Business Venturing,
International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, Journal of Enterprising Communities, Journal
of International Entrepreneurship, contributed several book chapters, and presented at numerous
academic conferences. She has also published two books, i.e. Entrepreneurship in the Informal Economy:
Models, Approaches and Prospects for Economic Development (in 2012) and Internationalization of
Firms from Economies in Transition: The Effects of a Politico-Economic Paradigm Shift (in 2014).

Mai Thai est professeure agrégée au Service de l’enseignement des affaires
internationales, HEC Montréal. Elle est spécialisée dans l’entrepreneuriat,
les méthodes qualitatives et les économies émergentes.
Sa formation universitaire comprend un baccalauréat ès arts (BA) de
l’Université des études étrangères de Hanoi, Vietnam (1998), une maîtrise
en administration des affaires (MBA) de l’Université de Hawaii, États-Unis
(2003), et un doctorat en philosophie (Ph.D.) en gestion internationale de
l’Université de Saint-Gall, Suisse (2008).
Mai Thai a joint HEC Montréal en 2009, après avoir travaillé en tant que professeure adjointe à Fairleigh
Dickinson University et chargée de cours dans plusieurs établissements d'enseignement supérieur en
Suisse et au Vietnam. Avant sa carrière universitaire, elle a été entrepreneure et journaliste au Vietnam
jusqu’en 2001. Tout au long de sa carrière, elle a remporté plusieurs prix pour son travail et son
dévouement : comme entrepreneure (premier prix et Social Enterprise Award pour son entreprise
d’observation des oiseaux), comme enseignante (Prix Alma-Lepage pour le meilleur cas pédagogique
mettant en scène des femmes gestionnaires et prix d’Innovation pédagogique pour la conception de
l’International Graduate Competition, une coopétition innovante visant à améliorer l’apprentissage des
étudiants du 2e cycle et le transfert de connaissances à l’entreprise) et comme chercheure (Distinguished
Scholar, Best Paper, Best Presenter, Matson Prize pour la qualité de sa recherche).
Depuis quelques années, elle étudie le lien entre l’entrepreneuriat et ses contextes socio-économiques,
culturels et politiques. Plus précisément, elle examine comment ces contextes influencent
l’internationalisation des petites et moyennes entreprises et les entreprises en démarrage, les motivations
des entrepreneurs et la migration des entrepreneurs. Outre son travail à HEC Montréal, elle est chercheure
associée à l’Asia Research Center, Université de Saint-Gall en Suisse. Elle est également membre du
Comité de rédaction de Reflective Practice et du Journal for International Business and Entrepreneurship
Development ainsi que rédactrice en chef des numéros spéciaux de Journal of Enterprising Communities,
International Journal of Business Globalization, et Journal of Innovation Economics.
Mai Thai a publié plusieurs articles dans des revues scientifiques, y compris Journal of Business
Venturing, International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, Journal of Enterprising
Communities, Journal of International Entrepreneurship, écrit plusieurs chapitres de livres, et fait des
