Practice Green Health
Sep 17 2010 – 01:00 PM Eastern
Green spaces are becoming key elements in the design of many healthcare facilities. Evidencebased design criteria as well as Green Guide for Healthcare and LEED recommendations
recognize the importance of access to views and physical connection with nature for improved
patient outcomes. These same spaces provide a source of respite for staff, caregivers, and family
from the stresses of the healthcare environment.
The George F. Riley Healing Garden created on the Botsford Hospital campus for the new
Botsford Comprehensive Cancer Center, Farmington, Hills, Michigan is an example of a space
that was designed to address the user needs from an experimental point of view, achieve LEED
recognition for innovation, and honor the historical significance of the garden for its adjacency to
the Botsford Inn, once owned by Henry Ford. A post-occupancy evaluation will assess the
advantages and limitations of this space for its users while providing insights into more informed
future designs.

Green Construction Series: Case Studies of Campus Infrastructure – 2010 Update
(Webinar)
Practice Green Health
Oct 15 2010 – 01:00 PM Eastern
As part of the PGH 2009 Webinar series, they presented the story of Salem Community Hospital
and the sustainable infrastructure decisions that enabled design opportunities. One year later, with
the facility fully operational since August of 2009, they will present an analysis of utility and
patient data collected and talk about what worked, what surprised them and what lessons were
learned.
As an integrated practice committed to sustainable design, they will present this as a benchmark
of our design process as well, outlining strategies that lead to effective relationships with owner
and selection of appropriate sustainable products and systems to fit within their business model.

Concordia receives a message on bottles: Find another way to carry water
The Gazette
"Bottled water is causing cancer, polluting the environment, making communities suffer and
privatizing a fundamental human and ecological right," Beach explained in a recent letter urging
Concordia University president Judith Woodsworth to get on board the bottle-free bandwagon.

CARBON FOOTPRINT OF A RENAL SERVICE POINTS FINGER AT DRUGS AND
EQUIPMENT
Campaign for Greener Healthcare
A carbon footprint study of a UK renal service, undertaken by Green Nephrology Fellow, Dr
Andy Connor, and published in the Quarterly Journal of Medicinethis month, confirms the
importance of tackling supply chain emissions, revealing that the procurement of goods and
services accounts for 72% of the carbon impact of kidney care. Within procurement, the majority
of emissions are attributable to pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and waste services.

Green Nephrology guide for Local Representatives
Campaign for Greener Healthcare
This guide is intended to help Green Nephrology Local Representatives, and others, get started in
greening their renal unit. It talks you through who you might find to help you locally (Developing
your local team), starting off on some small projects (Getting started…), taking on the case
studies (Do Once and Share: Case Studies), the role of action plans (Developing a Sustainability
Action Plan), involving your patients (Involving Patients) and other resources.

Disease patterns: Multiplying the value of prevention
Campaign for Greener Healthcare
In a paper published in this month’s Environmental Health Perspectives, Rodney R Dietert,
Professor of Immunotoxicology at Cornell University (USA), argues for a new approach to both
treating and preventing disease, based on mapping the relationships between different illnesses.
He argues that “illnesses such as type 1 diabetes and asthma are not only the end result of
environmental exposures interacting with genetic background; they are the entryway into larger
environmentally-associated health concerns”.

10:10 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY CHECKLIST
Campaign for Greener Healthcare
The Green Occupational Therapy Network has published its own 10:10 Checklist and poster to
help OT Departments cut carbon and improve care. It's not all about switching off and pedal
power - actions cover equipment provision, exploring "mindfulness" in ADLs and "sustainabilitea"!

emissions on Sunday 10th October, 2010, and to celebrate their low-carbon lifestyles.
University College London Hospital will be offering a low-carbon menu to its patients
