Sur une route poussiéreuse de la capitale de la Sierra Leone, des soldats des
Nations unies assurent la surveillance
d’un bâtiment fortifié abritant la Cour
spéciale.
On a dusty road in the capital of Sierra
Leone, United Nations soldiers guard a
heavily fortified building known as the
Special Court. Inside, Issa Sesay awaits
his trial.
A l’intérieur, Issa Sesay attend d’être
jugé. Les procureurs l’accusent d’être
un criminel de guerre, coupable de
crimes contre l’humanité, tandis que
ses défenseurs voient en lui un combattant réticent qui a joué un rôle crucial
dans le retour à la paix. Bénéficiant
d’un accès inédit aux procureurs, aux
avocats de la défense et aux victimes
ainsi qu’à Sesay lui-même, «War don
don» fait le procès de la justice internationale afin de montrer que parfois le
passé n’est pas seulement douloureux
mais aussi opaque.
Prosecutors say he is a war criminal,
guilty of crimes against humanity. His
defenders say he is a reluctant fighter
who played a crucial role in bringing
peace. With unprecedented access to
prosecutors, defense attorneys, victims, and, from behind bars, Sesay himself, «War don don» puts international
justice on trial for the world to see - finding that in some cases the past is not
just painful, it is also opaque.

La réalisatrice et productrice Rebecca
Richman Cohen est une cinéaste primée
et une licenciée de droit ayant une expérience dans le domaine des droits humains et de la défense criminelle. Après
avoir effectué un stage à l’organisation
Bronx Defenders elle a poursuivi son travail d’enquêtrice à la Cour spéciale pour
la Sierra Leone. Elle est ensuite revenu
en Sierra Leone pour mettre en chantier «War don don». Au milieu de ses
différents séjours en Sierra Leone, elle
a intégré l’université, prenant la charge
d’un séminaire de premier cycle intitulé
« Droits humains, atrocités de masse et
cinéma documentaire» à la Rhode Island
School of Design (RISD) et enseignant
les «Histoires relevant de la justice criminelle au cinéma» à l’American University’s Human Rights Institute.

Cohen is an award-winning filmmaker
and a law school graduate with experience in international human rights and
criminal defense. She interned as an
investigator at the Bronx Defenders and
continued to do investigative work at
the Special Court for Sierra Leone. Then
she returned to Sierra Leone to begin
production on «War don don». Between
trips to Sierra Leone, she has been adjunct faculty at the Rhode Island School
of Design (RISD) where she taught an
undergraduate seminar entitled «Human
Rights, Mass Atrocity, and Documentary Film» and at American University’s
Human Rights Institute where she taught
«Criminal Justice Stories in Film.»
