LAL 632 | Terminology and Terminography

AIMS
This course examines the question of terminology from multiple angles, beginning with
learning to identify terms – understood as key words and indicators of theory and thought –
and understanding them, to the theory implied by a term, to how it is used in an Arab context
and the possibilities/methods for creating terms in Arabic. Through the course students will a)
acquire essential knowledge in terminology b) learn the necessary basic skills to use and apply
this knowledge in a specific context, particularly the academic and social reality of the Arab
world and c) be able to apply knowledge and skills to:

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The course develops key skills consistent with the program’s aim to produce graduates
qualified to carry out world-class academic research in the fields of linguistics and
lexicography using cross-disciplinary methods. This course will also equip students with the
scientific critical and analytical apparatus necessary to think about the issues and phenomena
of today’s Arab world, and to contribute knowledge and research in the field of Arabic
lexicography, and in developing Arabic terminology creation. The skill sets include:
1) Subject-specific skills:
• Understanding what words and terms have in common and how they differ within and
outside of texts
• Ability to pick out terms in texts by observing accompanying textual collocates
• Differentiating, explaining, and evaluating the ways of creating scientific and technical
terms
• Methods for the control of Arabic terminology transferred from foreign languages and skills
to determine what is appropriate or otherwise for Arabic and its systems of designation and
discourse
• Understanding the differences between terminology in general and its use in specialist
dictionaries
• Acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to evaluate terminology
2) Core academic skills:
• Ability to analyze the difficulties facing contemporary Arabic and how to overcome linguistic
problems by filling gaps in terminology
• Learning to exercise control over the current state of Arabic terminology, and ability to
choose the most appropriate term when there are many terms in use
• Ability to assess available options in fields such as linguistics, lexicology, and lexicography,
and to apply these in lexicographical work on general and specialized dictionaries
• Ability to apply skills in the fields of translation and transfer, and to make good choices
when translating general and specialized texts
3) Personal and key skills:
• Assess and differentiate concepts with an awareness that choice of terminology is not a
neutral act
• Ability to accurately express the fine differences between concepts in order to assess and
create specialist dictionaries (including differentiation of methods of transmission and
translation, and making good choices)
• Ability to analyze mechanisms of language use in broad contexts
• Understanding of language as a dynamic structure and linguistic concepts unfixed and
immutable
LEARNING/TEACHING METHODS
Teaching is delivered through three forms:
1) Lectures presenting the main approaches and conclusions regarding an issue in
terminology.
2) Seminars based on the active participation of all students. These aim to present additional
analyses, treatments, and comparisons, as well as offering new material related to the
issues raised in lectures.
3) Presentation of applications of terminology creation.
