«Pour moi, la photographie représente un recueil d’événements en une image donnant la possibilité aux autres d’y
retrouver un événement ou de le projeter. Qu’il y ait une forme d’art ou non, le plus important est d’avoir de bonnes photos,
et s’il faut absolument qu’il y ait une forme artistique, j’accepte les photos telles quelles, sans que je me pose des questions.
Les critiques d’art ne nous ont-ils pas imposé traditionnellement ce que l’art doit être ou devenir?’ (CU)

PREFACE by Eric Ubben
Numerous essays and articles have been written about Carl Uytterhaegen the photographer. In this short
introduction to the publication of “Auchel Revisited”, I
want to focus on a lesser known aspect of Carl Uytterhaegen, namely on his role as university professor for
photography at the Royal Academy of the Ghent University. This is certainly not a nostalgic looking back
because that would not serve an engaged and active artist well. Homage often has a tragic undertone, as if
something has ended for ever. Homage to a person who voluntarily (or involuntarily) concludes a facet of
his life fortunately does not apply in this context. Granted, in 2000, Carl Uytterhaegen closed a chapter of
his life, namely his work as teacher and as animator of the photography workshop at Academy Street.
I believe that he harbors no ill feelings towards the Academy. Inferring from his high degree of presence at
our events, I feel that the K.A.S.K. still can count on his support and understanding. Naturally it pleases me
that, like Julien Vandevelde, Marc Van Gysegem and Armand Verspeeten, he remains exceptionally active in
his artistic practice.
But we were going to talk about Carl Uytterhaegen, the teacher, and maybe our story would include, in
passing, the magic of the school of Ghent. After all, the radiance of the Ghent photography school is for a
great part his doing. Together with Armand Verspeeten, Julien Vandevelde, Marc Van Gysegem and Jef Ost,
we recognize Carl Uytterhaegen as one of the founding fathers of the photography department. They are all
photographers with a strong personality and a unique background.
Among the restless and verbal individualist Julien Vandevelde, the contemplative and diplomatic Marc
Van Gysegem, the solid workmanship of Armand Verspeeten, the technical ingenuity of Jef Ost, Carl
Uytterhaegen remains at the focal point of those qualities. He is particularly erudite and well-read,
calm/restless in his artistic search, uncompromising in his artistic choices and demanding the highest
excellence of his students. Among those five, he was/is the most strongly oriented towards the documentary
form and, consequently, he clearly left his mark on the renowned photojournalistic branch of the
department. In the early seventies, long before internationalization became fashionable in educational
circles, Carl Uytterhaegen traveled to Germany to study, among other subjects, subjective and apparative
photography. He created and, in addition, directed several artistic projects, always with a clear societal
dialogue in mind.
About the merits of the department, there really is no longer any doubt and the gallery of alumni is as solid
as a proverbial rock, with Carl De Keyzer, Dirk Braeckman, Michiel Hendryckx, Lieve Blancquaert,

Patrick DeSpiegelaere, Freya Maes, Lucas Jodogne, Priscilla Bistoen, Sebastiaan Schutyser, and last but
not least, the (nearly) entire teachers body in the photography department. In my title, I referred to the
notion “revisited”. A little bit like Carl Uytterhaegen returning to Auchel, I look back to one of the most
exciting and outstanding teachers of photography at the K.A.S.K for nearly thirty-five years.
Allow me, here and now, to pay a modest tribute to the second honorary professor of the Ghent Academy
namely to
Carl Uytterhaegen who shows his work in “De Zaal”.
