Our community, both here in Manitoba and across Canada, includes a significant francophone population, whose members are, in many circumstances, entitled to legal services in French. We believe that it is essential that our law school and our students be able to meet the needs of this community and the growing demand for legal services in French. In furtherance of our commitment to creating proficient lawyers with the skills required to practice in both official languages, we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to pursue part of your legal education, at Robson Hall, in French. It is important to note that we could not offer this program without the financial support of the Federal Department of Justice. In addition to its key role in legal practice in jurisdictions where French and English versions of statutes and regulations are equally authoritative (e.g., Canada, Manitoba), bilingualism is an important asset if you are interested in working for the government, in an international setting, or have aspirations of becoming a judge. Applicants to some federal and provincial government positions, including high‐level offices, are required to be bilingual. For many desirable international legal career opportunities, fluency in at least two languages is required. Canadians have the right to be heard in criminal courts in the official language of their choice and as such, bilingual judges are highly sought‐after. Moreover, in any sphere of law, having the ability to serve a broader spectrum of clients and possessing a strong command of legal vocabulary in our two official languages is a professional advantage. Winnipeg has a significant Francophone population, which continues to grow with the continuing influx of French‐speaking immigrants. Competence in legal French will allow you to serve this growing community and will set you apart from other applicants in the minds of your future employers. First year students have the opportunity to study Legal Methods in French. The course focuses on the practical aspects of practicing law and includes legal research and some drafting of documents. As well, the judge‐shadowing component of the Legal Systems course is offered with French speaking judges. We understand that coming to law school is in itself quite a challenge. These courses are offered on a pass/fail basis, allowing students to gain exposure to legal French without putting them at a disadvantage relative to their English‐program colleagues. Whether French is your first language or you have learned French through an immersion program, our goal is to encourage all students to develop and enhance their existing capacities with a view to becoming comfortable and confident using French in a legal setting. Notre communauté, à l’échelle provinciale et nationale, comprend une population francophone importante. Les justiciables francophones ont, dans plusieurs contextes, le droit à des services juridiques en français. Il est essentiel que notre faculté de droit ainsi que nos étudiants puissent répondre aux besoins de cette communauté et à la demande croissante pour les services juridiques en français. Outre son importance pour la pratique du droit dans des juridictions où versions française et anglaise des lois et règlements ont également force de loi (p. ex. Canada, Manitoba), le bilinguisme est un atout important si vous envisagez un jour de faire carrière au gouvernement, dans un contexte international ou comme juge. Les candidats pour certains emplois dans la fonction publique provinciale et fédérale, y compris des postes de haut niveau, doivent être bilingues. Plusieurs carrières juridiques internationales prestigieuses exigent la maîtrise d’au moins deux langues. Dans le domaine du droit pénal, chaque individu a le droit d’être entendu dans la langue officielle de son choix. Ainsi, les juges bilingues sont très prisés. Par ailleurs, dans n’importe quelle sphère du droit, maîtriser le vocabulaire juridique dans les deux langues officielles permet de servir un plus grand nombre de clients et est un avantage professionnel. La communauté francophone de Winnipeg ne cesse de croître avec l’arrivée d‘immigrants francophones. En maîtrisant le français juridique, vous pourrez servir cette communauté et vous distinguer aux yeux de vos futurs employeurs. Les élèves de première année peuvent suivre le cours de « Legal Methods » en français. Ce cours porte sur les aspects pratiques de la profession et comprend la recherche juridique et la rédaction de documents. « Legal Systems », un autre cours de première année, comprend un mentorat avec des juges (« judge‐shadowing ») qui est offert avec des juges francophones. Nous comprenons que de poursuivre des études en droit est déjà un grand défi. Les élèves sont évalués pour ces cours suivant un système de réussite/échec, leur permettant de s’exposer au français juridique sans être désavantagés par rapport à ceux qui suivent ces cours en anglais. Que le français soit votre langue maternelle, ou que vous l’ayez appris par un programme d’immersion, notre but est de vous encourager à développer et renforcer vos compétences et de gagner de l’assurance à parler français dans un cadre juridique.
