Léon Delachaux est né le 30 juillet 1850 au Pissoux près de Villers-le-Lac dans le Doubs
(France).
Sa mère est Française et son père Suisse.
Il grandit dans les vallées neuchâtelloises (Suisse), aux Planchettes près de La-Chaux-deFonds, puis à Morat dans le canton de Fribourg où ses parents exercent la profession
d’horloger.
Son père disparaît tragiquement en 1885 alors que Léon a tout juste 5 ans.
En 1859 sa mère part pour Le Caire en Egypte avec Léon alors âgé de 9 ans. Il y apprend
l’anglais et un peu l’arabe. Mais Léon ne fait pas bon ménage avec son beau-père avec
lequel sa mère s’est remariée, il quitte alors l’Egypte et le foyer familial dans sa 18e année.
Il traverse la Méditerranée, débarque à Marseille, séjourne à Draguignan où il exerce un
temps ses talents pour le trait dans la peinture des filets sur les carrosseries de voitures.
Puis il rallie la Suisse, aux Planchettes, le berceau de sa famille, frontalier avec la France. Il
trouve un emploi comme graveur sur métaux précieux chez L. Favre-Bulle au Locle, la
ville voisine.
Un représentant du célèbre joaillier américain Tiffany lui propose de venir s’installer à
Philadelphie et de travailler pour lui. Léon accepte et embarque en 1872 pour l’Amérique
du Nord. Il a 22 ans.
Sa nouvelle situation de graveur chez Tiffany lui assure une vie confortable.
Il rencontre une jeune femme française récemment émigrée, Marie-Appoline Noël dite
Pauline, qu’il épouse au printemps 1875. Elle lui donne un fils en décembre 1875, Clarence
Léon Delachaux.
En 1876 Philadelphie accueille l’Exposition Universelle et l’on peut y admirer les œuvres
des peintres impressionnistes qui font tant parler d’elles. Léon est sous le charme et
succombe à la tentation de la peinture. Il s’inscrit à la Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
la même année 1876.
Sous l’autorité de Thomas Eakins, fraîchement revenu de Pont-Aven, Léon prend des
cours du soir. Son engouement et son talent suscitent rapidement l’intérêt des
professionnels de l’art grâce auxquels ses œuvres obtiennent un réel succès.
Born on 30 July 1850 to a French mother and Swiss father at Pissoux near Villers-le-Lac
in the French department of Doubs, Léon Delachaux grew up in the Swiss valley of
Neuchâtel, at Planchettes near La-Chaux-de-Fonds, then at Morat in the canton of
Fribourg where his parents worked as clockmakers.
His father died tragically in 1855 when he was only five years old.
In 1859 Delachaux, who was nine at the time, left with his mother for Cairo where he
learnt to speak English and some Arabic. His mother remarried, but Delachaux, who did
not get along with his stepfather, decided to leave Egypt and the family home at eighteen.
After crossing the Mediterranean and landing at Marseille, he stayed in Draguignan for a
while where he exercised his drawing talents painting decorative borders on carriages.
Returning to Switzerland and his hometown of Planchettes on the French border,
Delachaux found work in the neighboring town of Locle as an engraver of precious metals
at L. Favre-Bulle.
Delachaux was offered a job at Tiffany’s, the famous American jewelry firm in
Philadelphia, and, after accepting the offer, sailed for America in 1872 at the age of twentytwo.
Delachaux’s work as engraver at Tiffany’s allowed him to make a comfortable living. He
met a young woman recently emigrated from France, Marie-Appoline Noël (Pauline),
whom he married in the spring of 1875. In December 1875, she gave birth to a son
Clarence Léon Delachaux.
In 1876 Philadelphia hosted the World’s Fair where the much-talked-about works of the
impressionist painters were on display.
Delachaux was captivated and succumbing to the temptation of painting enrolled at the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts the same year.
Delachaux took evening classes studying under Thomas Eakins, who had just recently
returned from Pont-Aven. His passion and talent quickly attracted the attention of the
professional art community making his success possible.
