1 Name one famous detective, one spy
and one character in a horror story. Now
look at pages 39 to 41 and compare with
your answers.
2 a) Look at pages 39 to 41. Find the
titles, authors and dates of publication of
the 7 books.
b) Read pages 39, 40 and 41 again. Are the
following statements right or wrong?
Justify your answers.
- Frankenstein is the name of a monster.
- August Dupin is a policeman.
- Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are two different
people.
- Sherlock Holmes is a very logical person.

tevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and
Mr Hyde in only three days. A scientist, Doctor Jekyll,
is looking for the chemical formula for immortality. He
tests the potion on himself but he is transformed into a
murderous monster, Mr Hyde. Jekyll cannot find the
antidote, so he can only kill the monster by killing
himself.

killed his parents.

How to improve your vocabulary

Connaître un mot, c’est souvent en connaître plusieurs. On peut ainsi enrichir son vocabulaire !
PART I
a. Le suffixe -ful vient de l’adjectif full, qui signifie “plein”.
Remarque bien que le suffixe ne comporte qu’un seul “l” : -ful.

Tu vas maintenant pouvoir deviner le sens de nombreux adjectifs, même si tu les rencontres pour la
première fois. Écoute ces exemples et répète-les : le suffixe n’est pas accentué.

TIPS
- Quand tu rencontres un mot inconnu, repère s’il est formé d’un mot que
tu connais et d’un préfixe (un-) ou/et d’un suffixe (-ful). Cela doit devenir
un réflexe !
- Pour enrichir ton vocabulaire, apprends le sens de base des préfixes et
des suffixes que tu rencontres. Tu peux constituer des fiches avec des
exemples.
- Comprendre le sens d’un mot anglais et connaître sa traduction exacte en
français sont deux choses bien différentes !

Write a short story where you are the hero! First, find some ideas for your story:
where? what time? who with? what?... Then make a list of all the words you need.
You can start your story like this:
Do you know what happened to me last night? I was ...
Write !
Choose a crime, and then prepare the police interrogation to find the culprit.
Practise the dialogue with your partner, and then act it out in front of the class; take
it in turns to be the detective and the suspect.
