Look for information in the school library or on the Net. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, creates a monster with pieces of human bodies. But the monster persecutes his creator: he kills Frankenstein’s brother and his best friend. In a room locked on the inside, the police find the body of a young woman. How did the murderer escape? Auguste Dupin, a young, brilliant and eccentric gentleman will solve* this mystery. M E.A. Poe *solve: résoudre Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), by E.A. Poe (1809-1849) S tevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in only three days. A scientist, Doctor Jekyll, is looking for the chemical formula for immortality. He tests the potion on himself but he is transformed into a murderous monster, Mr Hyde. Jekyll cannot find the antidote, so he can only kill the monster by killing himself. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), by R.L. Rowling (1965-) 41 STRATEGIES How to improve your vocabulary FILE 3 Connaître un mot, c’est souvent en connaître plusieurs. On peut ainsi enrichir son vocabulaire ! PART I a. Le suffixe -ful vient de l’adjectif full, qui signifie “plein”. Remarque bien que le suffixe ne comporte qu’un seul “l” : -ful. a spoonful of sugar Tu vas maintenant pouvoir deviner le sens de nombreux adjectifs, même si tu les rencontres pour la première fois. Propose une traduction de ces adjectifs. Tu verras que ce n’est pas toujours facile ! Pourquoi ? Vérifie ensuite dans un dictionnaire. PART II a. Le suffixe -less vient du mot less, qui signifie “moins”. Sauras-tu deviner le sens de ces adjectifs ? TIPS - Quand tu rencontres un mot inconnu, repère s’il est formé d’un mot que tu connais et d’un préfixe (un-) ou/et d’un suffixe (-ful). Cela doit devenir un réflexe ! - Pour enrichir ton vocabulaire, apprends le sens de base des préfixes et des suffixes que tu rencontres. Tu peux constituer des fiches avec des exemples. - Comprendre le sens d’un mot anglais et connaître sa traduction exacte en français sont deux choses bien différentes ! 42 What makes a good private eye? ● He must be as cool as a cucumber. ● He mustn’t be chicken.
