I tend to have a December 1st rule for decorations in my house. I can handle one month of bows of holly but two months of fa-lala is a bit too much for me. No matter how you spend the holiday season - decking halls, lighting the menorah or kinara, or just curling up in a ball and cursing the arrival of snow - I wish you all the best. Since this will be the last newsletter for 2013, I wish you all a Happy New Year and a healthy and prosperous 2014. Laura Rhodes 2 ARIDO-EOC QUARTERLY FALL 2013 [in]tempo design studio By Jeremy Cheff FIRM PROFILE [in]tempo design studio, located at 357 Waverly Street, is home to a unique team of interior designers. Marianne Dupont (founder), and Marcqus Laver (partner), opened up their firm 11 years ago to be more involved with projects and work in a smaller open, studio environment. They strive to provide excellent design-centric services and aim to surpass clients’ expectations. Focusing mostly on commercial and institutional design, the firm has had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, allowing them to be more creative and push the boundaries of design as we know it. By stretching their design experience, they have become more versatile. The “Candela Light Art Show”, is a yearly exhibition where artists explore lighting as an artistic medium . [in]tempo participated in all five juried exhibitions, creating a dozen mixed media pieces, attesting to the company’s commitment to flexing their creative muscles, whenever an opportunity presents itself. [in]tempo’s 1st entry ‘Swank’ explored the journey a simple electrical cord makes from the wall, up the curve of a woman’s leg, through the corset, to the fixture at its heart. In 2007, ‘Effleurage’ shown here, included tissue paper flowers “folded using a wet-origami technique to produce an organic mushroom-like effect. “ ‘Red Shoes’ displayed in 2008, was a pair of glowing red penny-loafers equipped with ipods in lieu of coin, allowing the user to escape. ARIDO-EOC QUARTERLY FALL 2013 3 [in]tempo design studio FIRM PROFILE (cont’d) Although programs like AutoCAD, Sketchup and Revit allow you to quickly come up with a design, draw it and show the client multiple views, [in]tempo design studio often prefer to offer their clients hand drawings. Some examples of their work include exterior enhancements for a Heritage condominium on Dalhousie Street and conceptual design of a TD Bank at Billings Bridge Shopping Center. They have found a skilled renderer who can complete a colour perspective from a photo in less time than it takes to build a computer model. The warm, more artistic quality attracts attention and even enhances sales according to developers. Hand drawing is very useful to convey quick 3D information in a meeting and activates a part of the brain that gets sleepy with a digital interface. Another interesting project involved relocating over 400 pieces of EDC’s corporate art collection to their new headquarters. This included reframing, designing new display cases for artifacts, coordinating insurance appraisals and advising on new art purchases for key areas. Some clients appreciate that those with an interior design field bring more value than the traditional tasks of choosing colors and finishes; a designer’s experience with interior architecture, expertise with aesthetics and attention to detail, can contribute to graphics, cosmetic aspects of architecture, creative event planning, special decor, and more. Marianne and Marcqus have created a unique creative team environment to nurture designers. The group consistently affirms their creative spirit, whether it’s in their staff’s bi-annual creative adventures (i.e.: glass casting, fusing, painting, ceramics,..) or the design and fabrication of their unique seasonal corporate gifts. With over 10 years in the business, this firm seems to have found their place in Canada’s capital. Quoted from Pierre Amelotte in an article describing the PAI Medical Group headquarters redesigned by [in]tempo design studio, inside out (see image): “ If you can make it in a government city, you can make it anywhere!” check out [in]tempo’s beautiful rendering on the cover! 4 ARIDO-EOC QUARTERLY FALL 2013 4té inc. does New York City By Jeremy Cheff A few weekends ago, the 4té office had the amazing opportunity to go to New York City. As a team, we got to experience the city’s great architecture, culture and food. Just the island of Manhattan has the double of Ottawa’s population and is at least 30 times smaller in size. As there is clearly no way of expanding on the ground, New York has unimaginably high buildings in order to accommodate all of these people. Within this overwhelming and beautiful place, we got to visit Susan Tick’s home, have a private tour of the Guggenheim Museum and walk the streets that showcase so many different architectural design styles. On our first afternoon there, after a great Falafel, we were welcomed into Susan Tick’s home near lower Manhattan. To say it is a home is an understatement. Not only does she live there, but runs a business with a staff of just under 10 people. In her beautiful town home, the basement is where the fabrics are weaved together through a process of trial and error, the main floor contains her modern kitchen, as well as 6 work stations, an inspiration board mounted on a brick wall where they’ve pinned their latest creations, a collaborative area, and plenty of carpet samples on the old rustic hardwood floor. As you make your way onto the 2nd floor, you find her office space beside her welcoming large living room that also is used as a conference room, and her small outdoor terrace. The 3rd floor, which we did not get to see, was the bedroom. After going through her process of inspiration and her latest designs, we were taken up to the living room and shown a power point presentation. In this presentation, filled with only photos, she showed us how to make similarities between two things completely different look alike. Most comparisons were done between clothing and architecture, proving that a lot of similar shapes and colors can be found within the two. This also showed how different parts of design evolve together. On our second day, we had the opportunity to have a private tour of the Guggenheim Museum. It is a much different feeling being in the space than when you are seeing it in all of the Hollywood movies! Frank Lloyd Wright was an amazing architect who really pushed the boundaries of design. In this particular case, he didn’t stop at just the shape of the building, but made a point of giving a different experience within every room. He also made of point of walking through the space like it was a journey, taking the elevator to the top and spiraling down all the way to the main floor while looking at all of the art. It is a definite must see for those who have never been! Throughout our weekend stay, we managed to get a lot of walking done. We got to see New York’s wide variety of architectural design styles, from Roman Greek buildings with the massive front columns to multiple modern buildings with seamless window facades. This great deal of walking also included the historic freight rail on the west side turned into an elevated public walking trail overlooking a lot of the city’s busy roads. As interior designers, New York is a great place to visit. With its wide variety of design styles, and important historic past, it continues to grow and inspire those who get to witness all it has to offer. ARIDO-EOC QUARTERLY FALL 2013 5 ALGONQUIN Take on Habitat for Humanity S T U D E N T S “Global Village” Honduras By Rebecca Courtice/Dana Tapak Students Kaitlin Hay, Nicole Veenema & Hannah Munroe on last year’s successful Habitat for Humanity Trip to Nicaragua. ARIDO-EOC QUARTERLY FALL 2013 1 Professor & a couple more helping hands.... “ Making a positive change in peoples lives is very important to me. Lisa McGee, 4th year student “ I hope to learn more about the world and to develop my outlook on life through experiencing a new culture and lifestyle. “ 6 13 Students Committed “ From November 9-19th, 2013, 13 of Algonquin’s Interior Design students travelled to Honduras with Habitat for Humanity Global Village and worked with the locals in the town of Santa Rosa de Capon to build a house for a deserving family. In keeping with the Habitat model each family contributes 'sweat equity', and we really enjoyed working with them. This service trip is apart of an elective that the students are taking this semester. In addition to having planned and prepared for travel, the students also studied Honduras in comparison to Canada. The intention is to offer this interdisciplinary course yearly with students/team members from various programs across the College. The students travelled for 11 days and built with the family for 6 days. We visited a local orphanage and participated in a cultural exchange with the villagers. After our build days we travelled to the Copan Ruins for two days of sight seeing and rested before having travelled back home. The participants this year would like to thank/acknowledge the following sponsors who contributed to get the group to Honduras: Advanced Business Interiors, Haworth Inc., Dauphin, Tandus, Centiva, Groupe Lacasse, Arold Chambers Workspace Solutions Inc., Inscape, Momentum Group.
