Ils répondirent « Vénérable », et le Bienheureux dit : 2 Thus I have heard. Once the Blessed One was staying in the country of the Kurus near the town of Kammasadhamma. There he addressed the practitioners: “Practitioners”, and they replied “Venerable Sir” whereupon the Blessed One said: 3 [LE CHEMIN UNIQUE] [THE ONE PATH] [DER EINE WEG] « Pratiquants4, le chemin unique qui conduit à la purification des êtres, à surmonter les douleurs et les lamentations, à la destruction de la souffrance et du mécontentement, à l'acquisition de la méthode juste, et à la réalisation du nirvana – c’est le chemin des quatre établissements de la vigilance5. “Practitioners6, the one path that leads to the purification of beings, to overcoming sorrow and lamentation, to the disappearance of suffering and discontent, to acquiring the true method, and for realizing Nirvana – this is the path of the fourfold establishing of mindfulness. “What are the four? Was sind die vier? Here, in regard to the body we abide contemplating the body – diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful – putting aside desires and discontent in regard to the world. In the same way we abide in regard to sensations contemplating sensations, in regard to the mind contemplating the mind, and in regard to dharmas contemplating dharmas – diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, putting aside desires and discontent in regard to the world. “How, practitioners, in regard to the body do we abide contemplating the body? [BREATHING] Here, having gone to the forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, we sit down folding our legs crosswise. Holding our body erect and establishing mindfulness in front of us, we mindfully breathe in, and mindfully breathe out. Breathing in long, we know ‘I breathe in long’, breathing out long, we know ‘I breathe out long.’ Breathing in short, we know ‘I breathe in short, breathing out short, we know ‘I breathe out short.’ We train thus: ‘I breathe in experiencing the whole body’, and also: ‘I breathe out experiencing the whole body’. Then we train thus: ‘I breathe in calming the body’, and also: ‘I breathe out calming the body.’9 A skilled turner or his apprentice know when making a long turn ‘I make a long turn’, and on making a short turn ‘I make a short turn’. In the same way, we know whether we breathe in or out, long or short. When breathing, we train in experiencing the whole body, and also in calming the body. “In this way we abide contemplating the body internally, externally or both. We abide contemplating the nature of arising, passing away, or both in regard to the body. Mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in us to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness, and we abide independent, not clinging to anything in the world. “Furthermore, when walking, we know ‘I am walking’ and when standing ‘I am standing’; when sitting we know ‘I am sitting’ and when lying down ‘I am lying down’. We know the posture of the body in all its positions. “Furthermore, we act clearly knowing when going forward and returning, when looking ahead and looking away, and when bending and extending our limbs. We act clearly knowing when wearing our clothes and carrying objects.12 We act clearly knowing when eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting and also when urinating and defecating. We act clearly knowing when walking, standing, sitting, falling asleep and waking up, as well as when talking and keeping silent. [BODY PARTS] “Furthermore, up from the soles of the feet and down from the crown of the head, we review this very body, enclosed by skin, as being full of various impure things:15 ‘In this body there are head hairs, body hairs, nails, teeth, skin, flesh, tendons, bones, bone marrow, kidneys, heart, liver, diaphragm, spleen, lungs, large intestines, small intestines, contents of the stomach, faeces, bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat, tears, grease, saliva, snot, fluid in the joints, and urine.’ Just as if there was a bag with openings at both ends full of various kinds of grains, such as wheat, rice, beans, peas, millet, sesame seeds and husked rice, and a man with good eyes were to open it and review it thus: ‘This is wheat, this is rice, these are beans, these are peas, these are sesame seeds, this is husked rice', in the same way we review the body. [ELEMENTS] “Furthermore, we review this very body, however it is placed or disposed, as consisting of elements: ‘In this body there are the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element.’ Just as if a skilled butcher or his apprentice had killed a cow and was seated at a crossroads with it cut up into pieces, in the same way we review this body. [CORPSE IN DECAY] “Furthermore, as if we were to see a corpse cast away in a charnel ground, one, two or three days dead, bloated, livid, and oozing matter, we compare it with our own body: ‘My body is of the same nature, it too will be like that, it is not exempt of that fate.’ Then, as if we were to see a corpse cast away in a charnel ground, picked at by crows, vultures, and hawks, by dogs, jackals, or kinds of worms, we compare: ‘My body is of the same nature, it too will be like that, it is not exempt of that fate.’ Then, we contemplate in the same way a skeleton with flesh and blood, held together with tendons. Then we contemplate a fleshless skeleton smeared with blood, held together with tendons. Then we contemplate a skeleton without flesh or blood, held together with tendons. Then we contemplate the bones detached from their tendons, scattered in all directions: here a hand bone, there a foot bone, here a shin bone, there a thigh bone, here a hip bone, there a back bone, here a rib, there a chest bone, here a shoulder bone, there a neck bone, here a jaw bone, there a tooth, and here a skull. Then we contemplate the bones bleached white, the colour of shells. Then we contemplate the heap of bones, more than a year old. Then, as if we were to see a corpse cast away in a charnel ground, the bones rotten and crumbling to dust, we compare it with our own body: ‘My body is of the same nature, it too will be like that, it is not exempt of that fate.’ “In this way we abide contemplating the body internally, externally or both. We abide contemplating the nature of arising, passing away, or both in regard to the body. Mindfulness that ‘there is a body’ is established in us to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness, and we abide independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That is how in regard to the body we abide contemplating the body. [II. VIGILANCE PAR RAPPORT AUX SENSATIONS] [II. MINDFULNESS OF SENSATIONS] [II. And how, practitioners, do we in regard to sensations abide contemplating sensations? “What is the suffering of not getting what is wanted? In beings subject to birth, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair, the wish arises, ‘O, may I not be subject to birth, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair. May aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair not come to me.’ But this is not to be achieved by wishing – this is the suffering of not getting what is wanted. “What is the noble truth of the origination of suffering? The craving that makes for further becoming – accompanied by passion and delight, relishing now here and now there – i.e., craving for sensuality, craving for becoming, craving for non-becoming. “What is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering? This is the noble eightfold path: right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right meditative absorption. “What is right view? Knowledge with regard to suffering, to the origination of suffering, to the cessation of suffering, and to the path to the cessation of suffering: This is called right view. Was ist rechte Anschauung? “What is right resolve? Aspiring to renunciation, to freedom from ill will, and to harmlessness: This is called right resolve. Was ist rechte Gesinnung? “What is right livelihood? Abandoning dishonest livelihood and keeping our life going with right livelihood: This is called right livelihood. “What is right effort? Generating determination, endeavour, perseverance, and upholding and exerting our intent not to let arise the harmful and unwholesome that has not yet arisen, generating determination, endeavour, perseverance, and upholding and exerting our intent to abandon the harmful and unwholesome that has arisen, generating determination, endeavour, perseverance, and upholding and exerting our intent to give rise to the wholesome that has not yet arisen, and generating determination, endeavour, perseverance, and upholding and exerting our intent for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, plenitude, development, and perfection of the wholesome that has arisen – this is called right effort. Was ist rechter Lebenserwerb? Was ist rechte Anstrengung? “What is right mindfulness? In regard to the body to abide contemplating the body, in regard to sensations contemplating sensations, in regard to the mind contemplating the mind, and in regard to dharmas contemplating dharmas – diligent, clearly knowing, and mindful, putting aside desires and discontent in regard to the world – this is called right mindfulness. “What is right meditative absorption? Withdrawing from sensual desires and everything unwholesome, we enter the first absorption and dwell in rapture and pleasure born from withdrawal, accompanied by directed thought and evaluation. Was ist rechte Achtsamkeit? Was ist rechte Sammlung? With the stilling of directed thought and evaluation we enter the second absorption and remain in rapture and pleasure born from composure: inner assurance, the unification of awareness free from directed thought and evaluation. With the fading of rapture we enter the third absorption and remain in equanimity, mindful and alert, experiencing a pleasure in the body of which the Noble Ones declare, 'Equanimous and mindful, he has a pleasurable abiding.' With the letting go of pleasure and pain, as with the earlier disappearance of elation and distress, we enter the fourth absorption and remain in the complete purity of equanimity and mindfulness, neither pleasure nor pain. This is called right meditative absorption. “This is called the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. “In this way we abide contemplating dharmas internally, externally or both. We abide contemplating the nature of arising, passing away, or both in regard to dharmas. Mindfulness that ‘there are dharmas’ is established in us to the extent necessary for bare knowledge and continuous mindfulness, and we abide independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That is how in regard to dharmas we abide contemplating the four noble truths. For free distribution. The sutra being adressed to all beings, the term bhikkhu used throughout, normally meaning “monk”, is translated as “practitioner”; and instead of “he, the monk” the more inclusive “we” is used. 9 Body stands here for Pali: kayasankhara, which fully translated would be the ‘bodily formation’; it refers to all bodily activities and unrest. 12 The original text says: we act clearly knowing; when wearing our “robes and carrying the outer robe and bowl”, since it referred to monks. 15 Impure stands here for everything “karmically conditioned” and not attractive as such. 18 Unworldly pleasant sensations arise for example in the first three meditative absorptions or while practising the four boundless states (love, compassion, joy, equanimity); unpleasant unworldly sensations are shame and remorse; neutral are the experiences of profound equanimity in the forth meditative absorption. 20 Dharmas are to be taken here as the laws and functioning of mind, the discovery of which leads to liberation. 27 See the appendix for more explanations on mindfulness practice in relation to the four noble truths in the Maha-Satipatthana Sutra. 30 The Maha-Satipatthana Sutra is identical to the Satipatthana Sutra with the exception of the longer passage on how to meditate on the four noble truths. 23
