ANNUAL REPORT Fund-Raising Campaign “Friends of the Bishop”
ANNUAL REPORT for the Fund-Raising Campaign “Friends of the Bishop” ending June 30th, 2012 The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Valleyfield Dear Contributors, As president of the Friends-of-the-Bishop Fundraising Campaign, it is with great pride that we present to you today our Annual Report for the fundraising campaign that ended on June 30th. As Bishop Simard indicated previously, your support and generosity enable us to respond to and support the various pastoral needs that arise throughout the diocese. By contributing to the fundraising campaign, it is clear that you recognize the value of the work carried out by the pastoral staff and that you pledge your support for the entire diocese. In closing, I wish to thank the members of our team who put their know-how and dedication into action to realise our objectives. Sincere thanks also go out to all our volunteers, who day after day make an exceptional contribution to our fundraising activities, and last but not least, thank you to all our contributors for understanding the importance of journeying with us. Rest assured that your continued support is greatly appreciated. Marcel D. Legault President of the Fundraising Campaign ‘Friends-of-the-Bishop’ Testimonial of Father Jean Joachim Rakotoarimanana, O.C.D. My name is Rakotoarimanana Nomenjanahary Jean Joachim du Sacré-Cœur. For 15 years now, I have been part of a religious order known as the Discalced Carmelites of Madagascar and the Islands of the Indian Ocean, and was ordained priest three years ago. The Lord is doing wonderful things for me. This is why I can affirm as St. Paul did: “And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20). In fact, it is this relationship that animates my life and my vocation as a religious and priest. The Youth preparing for confirmation and receiving a treasure of faith. Father Joachim celebrating Holy Mass at Sainte-Marguerite d’Youville Parish. 2 I was asked to write a few lines about my experience and integration into the Diocese of Valleyfield since 2010. Each country has its own particularities, strengths, and weaknesses. As I mentioned earlier, I live in a personal relationship with the Lord by o.c.d. Father becoming aware that if there is a real relationship, we Joachim N. can turn to another and say: “What can I do for you?” Rakotoarimanana I draw inspiration from the reply that Jesus gave to Peter: “Feed my lambs… Look after my sheep… Feed Vicar, Ste-Philomène and Ste-Martine my sheep.” (Jn. 21:15-17), which means to me that all Parishes of humanity is my family; hence, the entire world is my country. In other words, wherever I am sent becomes my human community. Moreover, within the Church community, we are really no longer strangers to each other. And as St. John of the Cross said “Where there is no love, put love…” Yet, we are not to wait for others to like us or to take the first step. There are many differences between this land and Madagascar: culture, climate, way of life, eating habits, etc. But, of utmost importance to me is the person, just as he or she is—a beloved child of God. One Vision, one Mission, one Passion! This year, I can truly say that I am filled with great joy. The Diocese of Valleyfield has welcomed me as its new pastor to journey in love, joy, and peace along with some 200,000 Catholics who live in the various parishes and regions of our diocesan Church. I feel privileged indeed to work among you and wish to thank you for your warm welcome. As you know, last year the diocese adopted a missionary vision intended to help guide all our pastoral activities, namely to create and develop Christian communities that become involved in the mission of the Church. I adhere to this vision with great fervor, while hoping to develop over the course of 2012-2013 the following pastoral orientations: 1) Consistent with the October 2012 Synod of Bishops on the new evangelization, we wish to go forth and make new disciples who will journey in the Church and become involved in its mission. 2) In line with the pastoral initiative of the Canadian Catholic Bishops on the family unit, we want to reach out to families and recognize their value as an oasis of ‘family communion and life’, as well as a place where faith is transmitted. 3) In accordance with the Year of Faith, as announced by Pope Benedict XVI, which begins in October 2012, our goal is to instill and help foster in the hearts of today’s men and women a deep conviction of faith—one that is celebrated and engaging. In order to further these initiatives and help develop our Church and communities so they can be more missionary-oriented, we need your support, both spiritually and financially. Your generosity enables us, among other things, to promote the Youth Ministry, the Vocations Ministry, and offer catechesis to the youth and adults alike, while helping support training and renewal programs for pastoral staff. It also provides assistance for priests who come from other countries and the social action component serves to help people who are often forgotten or impoverished. Thank you for contributing to our campaign whose aim is to respond to the various pastoral needs and to sustain the missionary momentum within our diocesan community. Together, let us look to the future and build a Church that is vibrant, dynamic, and engaging. † Noël Simard Bishop of Valleyfield 3 Thank God you are there! Normand Paquette Diocesan Bursar It is true that modern-day living presents enormous challenges. In fact, it actually prompts us to respond to the best of our ability with all human and financial resources available to us. But without you and your unwavering support, we could not possibly strive tirelessly as we do to spread the Good News of the Gospel to all the Christian communities in the diocese. THE NEEDS of your Church AND YOUR ANSWER MISSIONARY PROCLAMATION The Friends-of-the-Bishop Campaign, a new evangelisation project, will enable us to implement a new service intended to reach the 'distant ones', namely those we do not see at Church. We must reach out to people nowadays both 'in and out of season'. We are also called to be missionaries in our own hometown. 4 The integration of PRIESTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES The Vocations Fund ensures our ability to welcome and support newly arrived priests in our parishes during their first year of integration, at a cost of up to $30,000. This is in fact an essential service, given the shortage of priests and the scarcity of replacements. The FUTURE and our YOUTH For 13 years now, the Bishop Lebel Fund has provided support to the Youth Ministry and to other youth movements such as the ACLE. To be both a young person and a Christian in today's world is indeed a challenge to our Faith! It is therefore essential to support World Youth Day (WYD) 2013, scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil next July. Initiatives of 3 EPISCOPAL VICARS in our pastoral region The Friends-of-the-Bishop Campaign will enable us to implement this new service, intended to ensure pastoral coordination within each of the six pastoral regions in the diocese and allocate resources appropriately among the various local communities. We must prepare for tomorrow so The Word can continue to spread to all corners of the diocese. Formation for SEMINARIANS, DEACONS, and LAY FAITHFUL The Vocations Fund supports the replacement of personnel in the diocese as well as ongoing training for the staff, both in the parishes and the diocese. This support is necessary to ensure replacements and to prepare for the future. Student assistance for underprivileged CHILDREN The Louis-Napoléon Leduc Fund provides $10,000 each year to help purchase school supplies for children in the various schools throughout the diocese. Faith education for ADULTS The Friends-of-the-Bishop Campaign ensures assistance and formation for renewal programs and for adults who wish to journey in Christian Faith within the Service of the Catechumenate. The journey from Baptism to Confirmation can be demanding, yet necessary, in order to adhere to the Gospel with an enlightened faith. School of Faith for the YOUTH (Catechism and the journey of Faith) The Messagères de Marie-Médiatrice Fund helps the parishes each year by offering our youth a solid formation in Christian Faith, a service that has become necessary since the removal of faith formation in the schools. Good News for Camp Bosco Camp de vacances familiales de Valleyfield has just recently acquired the site where Camp Bosco is located, which for decades belonged to the Diocese of Valleyfield. The Corporation (Camp de vacances familiales de Valleyfield) will now manage the social activities, while developing the facility’s recreational potential. Actually, Île Dondaine where Camp Bosco is located does not belong to the municipality of Coteau-du-Lac, the latter merely has jurisdiction over it. As current owner, the Camp de vacances familiales de Valleyfield will be in a better financial position to carry out its work. Participants enjoying a game at Camp Bosco. Youth Ministry and Siloé It was truly a year filled with blessings for our youth and the group Siloé. In fact, we could say that the World Youth Days (WYD) were really the highlight of the year, followed by several other special moments that further enhanced our spiritual canvas, creating a superb mosaic of blessings. Worthy of mention among these key events are certainly the Siloé monthly meetings as well as the various celebrations animated by the youth of the diocese, but equally important is the Youth Summit that took place in Montreal from May 19-21, 2012, where 22 members of our youth gladly participated. It is always very encouraging to see our youth come together to celebrate and pray as one. Especially significant, however, was the Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Montreal where 700 to 1000 people gathered. And, when asked by passersby why they were demonstrating, the youth happily responded for ‘JESUS’—with much pride and a certain sparkle in their eyes. It is indeed wonderful to testify in this way and to bring God into the streets with us. Nicola Di Narzo Priest, Youth Mission and WYD 2011 Parish Administrator Sainte-Cécile Parish 5 A.C.L.E. This year, the ACLE Committee decided to avail itself of the diocesan mission in correlation with the letter ‘A’ of our acronym (A to ‘accept gladly’). In fact, to accept gladly and welcome new disciples is an important part of our mission as baptized children of God. Our first camp activity drew its inspiration from the theme of World Mission Sunday “We are witnesses, builders!” in order to help the youth discover the mission of the Church and to enable them to take their rightful place as witnesses of faith for others. The animators and resource persons from the ACLE who participated in the World Youth Day (WYD), in Madrid in August 2011, later had an opportunity to organise a winter camp activity for the youth and their theme focused on Mary and Saint Bernadette of Lourdes in France. Having experienced Lourdes, the youth were then able to discover by the various testimonies presented, just how Bernadette, a 14-year-old adolescent, gladly accepted the message of Mary. As for the young adults, many of them continued to meet for spiritual renewal following the WYD. Once a month, they would come together for prayer, catechesis and to share testimonials and make pilgrimages to such places of faith as St. Joseph’s Oratory. In fact, several young adults are already preparing for the next WYD, which will take place in July 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nicola Di Narzo - Ordination to the Priesthood After many years of formation and journeying, I was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Valleyfield on November 11, 2011. It was indeed the presence of family, friends, fellow priests, deacons, pastoral agents, parishioners, and members of the diocese that turned this event into an emotion-filled and loving experience. I thank the Lord first and foremost for His love and the wonderful mission He has conferred upon me, but I also wish to extend my sincere thanks to all who have touched my life in one way or another as I journeyed toward priesthood. I thank in particular all members of the diocese who offered much support and words of encouragement along the way. Nicola Di Narzo Priest, Parish Administrator Ste-Cécile Parish Ordination to the priesthood is not a destination, but rather a step along the path of holiness—a road that leads to God, and I do need each one of you to help me on the journey. Thank you for being there and supporting me through prayer. I truly feel the merit of your prayers in my day-to-day ministry. Laying on of hands ritual by the Bishop. Nicola at the Altar. An ordination does not change the world, except... Yes, life has changed since my ordination to the priesthood on October 30, 2011. I am the same, yet not quite the same. The people with whom I associate have said so, as well. What is different? Certainly the grace of God; I truly feel that I have been touched by His grace in an appreciable way during the first few months since my ordination. Whether I am presiding at a Eucharistic celebration, administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation, meeting people, visiting the sick, working at the heart of the community as a priest, experiencing the support of prayerful parishes (St-Joachim, Ste-Marguerite d’Youville, and Ste-Philomène) that are welcoming and eager to serve, I am really learning as I go about the immense beauty of the ministry conferred upon me. These are but a few of the things that have greatly changed my life and draw me closer to God! All this seems too wonderful! You may say that many challenges and difficulties surely lie ahead. I would agree—there is no shortage of challenges, but by living day to day with the help of God and the support of all, we can overcome any difficulty. And more recently, I have been developing a sense of wonderment as to how God will help me meet the challenge of serving as administrator of three parishes, since my appointment in early June. I also delight in the works of the Lord as I ponder who He will work through to help us find solutions to certain minor problems! This keeps me hopeful! May this short testimony of my first few months as priest serve to express my utmost gratitude for all your generosity, which sustains both the diocese and me. And if I may so, the testimony also calls to me— it is an encouraging word to continue or to get started. Thank you again! Clément playing the guitar. In addition, donors receive an income tax receipt. The Roman Congregation of Saint Dominic The Dominican sisters established themselves in Valleyfield in 1927. As heirs of the Dominican charism, the sisters are dedicated to scrutinizing the Word of God, celebrating it, living it, as well as proclaiming it. Their work was carried out in the area of Faith Education among the youth and adults alike, by means of closed retreats, the Christian Renewal Centre, teaching in five elementary schools throughout the city, animating Jeannette teams, the Studio du Petit Prince, the latter having closed its doors this year after 45 years of operation. Over the last 10 years, they have welcomed approximately 20 elderly women to their infirmary, offering care, friendship, comfort and spiritual support. o.p. Sister Lucille Desponts Vicariate Prioress (Canada) Whether it involves going outside to educate the youth or welcoming within our walls groups of people who thirst for the Word of God, these are really two facets of the same mission. Among other foundations in Québec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, Valleyfield represented the mainstay for the Dominican community, which enabled more than 75 sisters to proclaim Jesus Christ by means of their joy, prayers, dedication and by letting their faith shine forth. Today, they are deeply grateful to the diocesan and civil authorities for the unconditional welcome extended to them. They also thank the Lord for the bonds of friendship made over the years, which helped sustain them in their mission. Kindergarten class. The Convent in its natural setting. Day of Renewal.
