Objectifs / Objectives
Expliquer scientifiquement en quoi l’anatomie des
bébés est conçue pour l’allaitement. L’impact du
non-allaitement sur la santé et sur les coûts de
santé. Expliquer pourquoi l’allaitement ne cause
pas la carie dentaire et discuter de la controverse
du sevrage pour arrêter le processus de carie.
Expliquer et démontrer comment évaluer un frein
de langue court. Discuter des politiques de l’AAP et
la SCP concernant l’utilisation des suces pour
prévenir le syndrome de mort subite.
Explain scientifically how human babies are
anatomically designed to breastfeed. The impact of
not breastfeeding on health and healthcare costs.
Explain why breastfeeding does not cause dental
decay and the controversy about weaning as a way
to stop dental decay. Demonstrate and explain how
to evaluate a tight frenulum. Discuss the AAP &
CPS policies regarding pacifiers to prevent SIDS.

Dr. Nils Bergman
Dr. Bergman regards maternal
-infant skin-to-skin contact as a
first and critical intervention in
perinatology, with broad public
health impacts and implications.
His expertises include developmental
neuroscience, breastfeeding, neonatology and
obstetrics. He views skin-to-skin contact as
the neurological pre-requisite to successful
breastfeeding, with neonatal & obstetric care
re-orienting its purpose to maintaining the
integrity of the mother-infant dyad. This
holistic view he terms “Kangaroo Mother
Care”. He is currently a Public Health
Physician in South Africa, and sees these
issues in the broader context of hospitals,
health systems and society as whole.

Dr. Brian Palmer DDS
Dr. Palmer retired in June 2005
after being a full-time familypractice dentist for 35 years.
For 30 of those years he did
self-funded research on the
importance of breastfeeding as
it relates to oral cavity, airway and facial
development and its impact on total health.
For the last 15 years in practice he also had a
special interest in the cause, treatment and
prevention of snoring and obstructive sleep
apnea. He retired so that he could have more
time to continue his research and share that
research with others.
