TRIA FATA
She is a puppeteer, he is a musician. Life and death are playing in their cabaret. The
big imaginary machinery they are activating together strangely looks like the one which
presides over our destinies: this weaving loom that the Ancients believed it belongs to
the three Parcae - Tria Fata - where the threads of our lives are weaving, uncoiling and
breaking.
It is in this way that an old woman is facing Death. Her time has come as soon as the
show begins. To set the date for payment as late as possible, that one suggests to this
one to deploy the panorama of her life in fast motion. In this way, the audience member
is led to consider all the metamorphosis of a life exposed before his eyes, in a dynamic,
exuberant, unusual and hallucinatory form. From birth to death, from childhood to love:
game, high-wire, images, fire - a large kaleidoscope is swirling before the extinction,
moving from one threshold to the other, in the shine of unlikely figures.
All the emotions and seasons are offered at the mercy of a Russian dolls dramaturgy,
where the old woman’s acting falls in with the one of the actors, itself resulting from the
Parcae’s one, in such a way that the puppet is then presented - depending on the more
striking relief - as a universal symbol of humanity.
NONA (Origins)
Initially, the puppeteers of La Pendue were looking to find again the original strength of
their art into the ancient tradition of Polichinelle. They tackled the job for three years,
from the street, out of the festivals, in a mere castelet, before they managed to wake up
this great myth with two creations: Le Remède de Polichinelle (childlike version) and Poli
Dégaine (crazy version for adult audience). Within seven years, they have been invited
to present these two versions close to eight hundred times, in France and around 30
countries, for more than 120 000 spectators. Through this original form, dynamic, popular and exigent, they learned the arcane secrets of a difficult and often unexpected art
with unmatchable wealth.
In parallel, Estelle Charlier and Romuald Collinet were mulling over new tracks, looking
to create a catharsis phenomenon as powerful and unanimous as the one fomented by
their show Poli Dégaine, but on a very different note. This time they chose to play on the
poetic and emotional efficiency of images, dramaturgy and music, from a very modern
perspective which does not spare any spectator. In collaboration with the musician
Martin Kaspar Läuchli, the dramatist and director Pavlina Vimmrova and the writer
Romaric Sangars, they gave birth, this spring 2015, to the show: Tria Fata.
DECIMA (Developments)
Tria Fata is the result of long researches in puppetry, La Pendue Company having explored the ambivalent relationship the puppet can develop with its creators-handlers, the
strong symbolism it is able to emerge immediately, as its “weightlessness point” between
inanimate and living things. This show, magic and technical, poetic and burlesque, aims,
among other goals, to break down all the prejudices which clutter up the surprising
liberty of the puppet.
This liberty is giving free reins to its imagination within the musical atmosphere developed by Martin Kaspar Läuchli in response to Estelle Charlier’s acting. And if the first is
a one-man band alternating the instruments, (clarinet, bass clarinet, accordion, drums,
voice), the second one is a woman orchestrating the most diverse forms, handling at
sight, playing, wearing different masks – both of them doubling their own multiplicity,
with the intention of delivering a true oneiric vertigo where puppets, humans and great
archetypes are mutating and inverting for the greatest resonance of mystery.
MORTA (It is at the end that everything begins...)
If death remains the privileged interlocutor of the heroin of Tria Fata, the perspective is
however, more than macabre, fundamentally burlesque. Moreover, the last Fate is representing here the final threshold to be passed within a narration and a scenography which
are first insisting on the human adventure as a succession of metamorphosis.
Each of these metamorphosis, each of these stages, is giving rise to a special game,
whether one is talking about cutting one’s stomach with an electric knife to give birth,
hanging at the end of one’s string like a brass ring, indulging in the acrobatics which
engages a first passion, or seeing the old age coming like a whirl of slides.
In this way, we can perceive, as a watermark, the Three Fates myth, Nona, Decima, Morta; the one who gives birth, the one who lets live and the one who kills, which parts are
surreptitiously shouldered by the puppeteer unfolding the life of a midwife under Death’s
impatient eye.
LA PENDUE
La Pendue, Theatre Company, puppets and sensitive metamorphosis, was created in
2003 in Grenoble by Estelle Charlier and Romuald Collinet, two former pupils of the
National School for Puppetry of Charleville-Mézières. La Pendue is managed by
Le Théâtre de l’Homme Ridicule, and it has built its workshops, its yurts, and its
rehearsal room on the heights of Grenoble.
From this favourable altitude, the company heads his work towards two divergent and
complementary directions:
- Traditional glove puppet productions inspired by the four-hundred-year-old character
Polichinelle (Pulcinella), through the show Poli dégaine.
- Contemporary work which experiments with different puppetry techniques (string puppets, portees, shadows, and other techniques still uncategorized),
However, these two lines agree on the essential: revealing the original human by means
of his acting.
TO THE END OF THE STRING...
Estelle Charlier
Puppeteer
She was first introduced to the performing arts and the playing tales, has already played
a hundred of characters and tried many techniques when she started studying at the
Conservatory for Dramatic Art in Grenoble and at the same time, at the University as
a performing art student. But, by a «hasard objectif», she discovered the artistic form
summarizing and accomplishing all the things for which she always had a passion: the
puppet. In order to fully devote to puppetry, she started to study at the ESNAM of
Charleville-Mézières, where she met Romuald Collinet and created with him La Pendue
company. Admiring the poetic mystery of the puppets, she likes to defy the abyss with a
makeshift theatre able to cause emotional discharges of a special quality.
Martin Kaspar Läuchli
Musician
After a year at the Dimitri Theatre School in Switzerland, he took the road in 2001 and
founded The Pumclicks Orchestra, a musical trio which has been travelling across
Europe since then… He also travelled as a one-man band, Martin Kaspar Orkestar, with
whom he crossed many countries, among them Senegal, Brazil, Serbia, and Italy…
From these, he brought some rhythms and melodies he likes to spread from top to
bottom while dancing, especially with his portable orchestra. Virtuoso in simplicity,
Martin remained loyal to the instruments of his family tradition.
Romuald Collinet
Theatre director, puppeteer
He was first introduced to the performing street arts and adventurous bohemia, and
then, at the age of 17, began performing street puppetry for about ten years. He later
studied at the ESNAM of Charleville-Mézières but left school in order to study the mysteries of Polichinelle, driving him to create his own, trough the uproar of the Neapolitan
streets. Thus nourished with popular tradition, he met again Estelle Charlier to work on
contemporary researches for La Pendue. He comprehends the puppet as an initiatory
and original way and tries to free his mind by the manipulation of artificial bodies.
Pavlína Vimmrová
Theatre director and dramatist
As she has been interested in languages, scripts and writings of all kind since a long time
- passing through linguistics and sinology studies in Prague, Paris and Beijing - she decided later to study the «writing systems» of the human body and mind within the theatre
frame. At the Theatre Academy in Prague (DAMU) she explored the possibilities between
the directed theatre, the actor’s liberty and the play’s limits which resulted in various
experimental performances. Actually, while initiating a research concerning a possible
synthesis of the «actor’s» theatre and the puppet’s one, she had a chance to meet La
Pendue and start a fruitful cooperation.
Romaric Sangars
Writer
After his studies in Modern Languages and Literature, and a memoir about the relationship between war and poetry, he settled in Paris where he published his first poems
in journals. He works now as a literary critic (Chronic’art), journalist, presenter of Le
Cercle Cosaque, and author of an essay-story published by Pierre-Guillaume de Roux Editions (Suffirait-il d’aller gifler Jean d’Ormesson pour arranger un peu la gueule de la
littérature française?).
Anthony Lopez
Stage management and lights
Falling in love with performing arts within associative structures of Valence, and fascinated by technical installations, he started studying Son et Lumière at the GRETA School of
Aubenas in 2001, accompanied by many internships for regional contractors. From that
moment on, he began a long period of creations and tours in the music, young audience
and contemporary circus fields, and recently in the puppet field with La Pendue Company. He is also co-founder of the Deviation association, which is financing the festival
Rencontres entre Les Mondes, where he works as a technical manager.
