Anxiety Prevention Program “Fun Friends”
-2-
This is a play-based program that teaches children essential resilience skills including:
How to relax and self soothe; How to regulate emotions; How to understand emotions in self
and others; How to be kind an empathic; Social and emotional skills; How to make friends
and share; How to be brave and try new things; How to build a strong sense of self and selfesteem; How to deal with conflict; Positive coping strategies and How to change negative
“red thoughts” into positive “green thoughts”.
The importance of a research based resilience program cannot be underestimated, with research
showing as many as 20% of preschool children in the general population exhibit moderate to
clinical levels of emotional and behavioural disturbance. Fortunately, the rapid development of
preschool children allows for effective treatment aimed at both prevention and intervention.
Children will have great fun and join in lots of activities promoting the development of social and

and teens, effective communication, as well as opportunities, while parenting, to enhance the
relationship with your child.

Emotional and Social Skills for School Readiness
Being ready for school means more than children knowing letters and numbers. When children

PARENT STOP!
We have created a PARENT STOP! within the OEYC – a place where parents can stop and
spend some time learning and thinking about their parenting in a very focused way – using a
computer .
There are two Parenting Programs called “Parenting Wisely” installed on the computer in the
playroom resource area:
1. For parents of children ages 3 – 10
2. For parents of teens
Both programs show common scenarios that almost all parents have to deal with sooner or
later…. a child trying to get your attention while you are on the phone; putting a child to bed; a
child who is not doing well in school, etc. After you view a scene, the program asks what you
would do and gives you three choices. You can see that choice demonstrated, and text will help
you decide if it was the best response/solution to the problem. Many parenting strategies are
discussed and shown.
If you would like to explore this program, please do so briefly, during any visit to the
drop-in. (Ask a friend to keep an eye on your child while you are in the resource area).
You may book a longer session - up to an hour at a time - by calling Michelle and reserving
the computer. At the moment we are trying to group all the PARENT STOP! bookings. However
we will try to be as flexible as possible, and try to accommodate your needs. Please arrange
childcare for your child during these visits. If you are unable to do so, please call and speak with
Michelle. We will try to assist you.

An Expression of Concern …
Over the past year a disturbing trend has developed with regard to workshop
attendance. Many registrants are just not showing up for the workshop in which
s/he is registered – even with a reminder call, and often when a confirmation of
attendance has been received!
If you are presently receiving this schedule by land mail and have an
email address, please let us know! It saves us all trees, time, and money to
send it to you by email!
If a workshop is cancelled we will make every effort to contact all registered
participants as soon as possible. However if weather is adverse, please email
or call to make sure the workshop has not been cancelled.
•
•
•
•
Though clients are not paying directly for service, our tax dollars are being
spent to reserve space, prepare handouts, and pay the salary of the facilitator.
Unless those who enrol actually attend the workshop, this is a terrible waste.
•
There are often individuals on a Wait List for the workshop who might have
been able to attend if we had received a cancellation call in time.
•
Service stats are the basis for continuing programs. If programs are not well
attended it is likely the programs will be reduced or cut altogether.
Let’s work together to make sure that parent and caregiver workshops are
well attended. Please inform us if you are not able to attend a workshop, so
we can contact someone else on the Wait List to take your place. Thank you!
Pour vous inscrire
•
•
If you would like your name added / removed from the mailing list, please call
(613-820-4922 x 3640) or email [email protected].
[email protected]
