1.1 Preface
For many people, researching family history is appealing because it invokes a sense of belonging and
nostalgia. To research ones family history we are following a method of oral history by tracing members
of a family, showing the relationships among them, recording their family stories, collecting their
treasured photos and documents, and sharing all that with other family members. Research for others is
much more serious and focused on hard quantifiable data, genealogical studies. Usually this accompanies
a burning question regarding origin, paternity or identity.
With the upsurgance of self-identification today of Metis peoples it is becoming easier to find
documentation. This hasn’t however completely solved the problem of discrimination which makes those
of Metis descent reluctant to share their genealogical records. The best way to resolve this problem is to
share our data across as many mediums as possible. Simple documents like this I hope will lead others to
do a more invasive search of their own background.
1.2 Research Strategies & Documentation Background
There are a few major methods of tracing genealogy which depending on your focus and representative
population may fail or succeed. Tracing ancestors and descendants is the most popular research method.
For those in Canada and the Northern United States that have a source for their Metis claim then they
may find a one name study helpful. A One-Name Study is a formal investigation and documentation of all
occurrences of one surname and its variants, whenever and wherever those occurred. This can
demonstrate a connection across borders between not only provinces but also Canada and the US.
Canada's experience with diversity distinguishes it from most other countries. Its 30 million inhabitants
reflect a cultural, ethnic and linguistic makeup found nowhere else on earth. We all belong to an ethnic
group. As you begin to research your family, you will find that the most common resources in North
America are for people having an English-speaking or a French-speaking ancestral origin. It is often
recommended to join a genealogical society that is specific to your ethnic group or place of origin. Many
however have begun to publish their collections online making it easier for the hobbyist or geologist to
work where they choose.
In this case we are presenting a basic overview of the family lines that present a Metis heritage relevant
to Canadian Heritage and Seaside Ancestors Tree Project. The list of names is pulled directly from the
work of Gail Morin chiefly entitled “First Métis Families of Quebec, 1622-1748. Volume 1: Fifty-Six
Families”.
“This new work, the first in a purported six-volume series, traces the descendants of the 56
original Métis families for up to three generations. Richly detailed, fully sourced, and indexed,
this work must be regarded as the starting point for Métis genealogy. Future volumes will
concentrate on subsequent generations of those Métis families whose progeny settled in
western North America in the 20th century, namely, the families of Jean Nicolet, Martin Prevost,
Pierre Couc dit Lafleur (later called Montour), Jean Durand, Pierre Lamoureux, and DanielJoseph Amiot.” (Genealogical.com, 2012)
