CHALKING THE DOOR
Blessing the home on or near the feast of Epiphany is a
tradition that dates from the middle ages. Using chalk, we
mark our doorways with the inscription 20+C+M+B+16,
calling to mind the wise ones, traditionally named Caspar,
Melchior, and Balthazar, who journeyed far from their homes
to Bethlehem in search of Jesus. The letters also stand for
Christus Mansionem Benedicat, (May Christ bless this house).

La bénédiction de la maison sur ou autour de la fête de
l'Épiphanie est une tradition qui date du moyen âge.
Avec de la craie, nous marquons nos portes avec l'inscription de
20 + C + M + B 16, rappelant les sages, traditionnellement
nommés Gaspard (Caspar), Melchior et Balthazar, qui ont
voyagé loin de chez eux à Bethléem à la recherche de Jésus. Les

This morning, we will chalk the door of our Cathedral home
and bless chalk for you to take with you for the chalking of
your own doors. Please pick up a piece of chalk and a prayer
sheet on your way out at the end of the service.

star of God’s son who became human two
thousand and fifteen years ago. Bless, O
Christ, this house of worship and bless each
person who enters it or seeks refuge on its

Jesus Christ our Saviour.

This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ
Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles - for surely you have
already heard of the commission of God's grace that
was given me for you, and how the mystery was made
known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few
words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive
my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former

generations this mystery was not made known to
humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy
apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles

working of his power. Although I am the very least of all

homage." When they had heard the king, they set out;
and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had
seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where
the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped,
they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the
house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and
they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening
their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a
dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own

CELEBRATING THE EUCHARIST

Cathedral in Downtown Montréal. Please give generously. If you
would like to find out about regular or tax efficient ways of giving

Through our outreach programmes the Cathedral supports many
local organizations which help the needy.
The Cathedral is open seven days a week between 7.30am and
6pm on weekdays and Sundays, and 11am – 6pm on Saturdays, for
all who want to pray, for all who are looking for peace, a quiet place
to sit and rest, and seek help.
