Jens Haaning, « Untitled
Production CAC Brétigny 2011 Initially produced in reaction to a specific location and its configuration, Untitled evolves according to the space in which it is installed. The work has been first shown in Munich in 1994 at O-Raum (“O-space”) in the framework of the exhibition The Seven Best, initiated by art students. The space was a temporarily closed shop, renamed in reference to the circular neon tubes of its shop sign, visible due to the absence of the acrylic layer normally covering the façade. By inducing the flickering of those signage lamps, Jens Haaning was rendering even more visible the floating status of the space. At CAC Brétigny, the intervention on the lamps echoes the exhibition “Anarchism Without Adjectives” and eventually takes part in “Projet Phalanstère”. Likewise other works (Edutainer and Annexe by Atelier van Lieshout, Bistanclaque by Dominique Mathieu and The Fire by Xavier Veilhan), Untitled superimposes itself on the architectural and functional inventory common to any art space: walls, office, lighting, sound system. Dissimilarly to the process of adjunction operating in these works, Jens Haaning’s intervention is closer to the subtraction characterizing the second group of « Projet Phalanstère »’s pieces : Is that the way it was? by Roman Ondak, the projection window by Rainer Oldendorf, the Useful Mouldings by Mathieu Lehanneur and particularly Fosse commune [Common grave] by Teresa Margolles, detourning a literally fundamental element by a work essentially visible through discourse and mediation. Similarly, Untitled participates in a defunctionalization of the lighting as an essential module of the art centre, discreetly interfering with the other works on show as well as with the future programming. The possibility of an immaculate White Cube, respectful of the principle of the artwork’s autonomy is thus made unachievable by this gesture of apparent carelessness, reminding of declining shops and their façades on the blink along with the wreck of the glowing and triumphant Modernity that gave birth to Broadway and Las Vegas. Jens Haaning is a Danish conceptual practicing artist living in Copenhagen, he has among other exhibitions participated in U-TURN, Quadrennial for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen (2008), the 4th and 6th Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, South Korea (2002 and 2006), the 9th Istanbul Biennial (2005), Documenta XI, Kassel (2002) and Traffic, CAPC Museé d'art contemporain, Bordeaux, France(1996). He also has participated in “Phalanstère” at CAC Brétigny (2003) and the series of exhibitions “The Living Currency” (2006-2010), organised by Pierre Bal-Blanc. Haaning's practice engages with the politics of distribution and visibility that govern our social behaviour and safeguard class division. Exhibition from June 19 to July 30, 2011 Closed July 14-17.
