Poll: Canadians want end to monarchy
Government must act. Parliamentary debate is needed now
TORONTO - Oct. 3, 2007 - In light of Monday's public opinion poll showing overwhelming majority support for
ending the monarchy, Canada's republican movement is repeating its call on parliament to form an all-party
committee, similar to the Flag Committee of the 1960's, to discuss the future of the institution.
"Canadians have clearly indicated that it's time for Canada to act like an independent nation and sever its last
constitutional link to Britain," said Tom Freda, national director of Citizens for a Canadian Republic (CCR).
The poll, released by Angus Reid Strategies, indicates that 53 percent of Canadians support ending the monarchy,
while only 35 percent support the status quo. Republican support jumps to 55 percent versus 31 percent when
respondants are asked about retaining the monarchy with Prince Charles as the successor to Queen Elizabeth II.
"Our parliamentarians must realize the opportunity we have here," added Freda. "Now is the time to engage in civil,
non-partisan parliamentary debate, not later. Why must we wait for a constituitional crisis to deal with what many
consider to be a pivotal step in Canada's evolution as a nation?"

Sondage: Les canadiens veulent mettre fin à la monarchie
Le gouvernement doit agir. Un débat parlementaire est de rigueur.
TORONTO – 3 octobre 2007 – Suite au dévoilement d’un sondage selon lequel la majorité des canadiens
voudraient mettre terme à la monarchie, le mouvement canadien pro-républicain réitère sa demande pour un
comité parlementaire formé de tous les partis, semblable au comité du drapeau canadien des années 1960.
« Les canadiennes et canadiens ont clairement indiqué que le moment est venu pour que le Canada agisse en tant
que nation indépendante et sèvre le dernier lien constitutionnel avec le Royaume-Uni » selon Tom Freda, directeur
national de Citoyens et citoyennes pour une république canadienne (CCRC).
Le sondage Angus Reid Strategies indique que 53% des canadiens souhaitent mettre fin à la monarchie, tandis
que seulement 35% la maintiendraient. L’engouement républicain monte à 55% contre 31% lorsque les
participants du sondage réagissent face à la possibilité que le Prince Charles succède un jour à la Reine Élizabeth
II.
« Nos parlementaires doivent saisir l’opportunité qui se présente, ajoute Freda. Le temps est venu d’engager un
débat non-partisan parlementaire avant qu’il ne soit trop tard. Pourquoi attendre une crise constitutionnelle avant
de traiter de cette étape importante dans l’évolution du Canada en tant que nation? »
