6 i went and i returned. it was nothing special. rozan famous for its misty mountains; sekko for its water. This is why we are asking to purge “God” and to obtain truth there and henceforth, where the angels and the fly and the soul are alike, there, where I stood and would, what I was, and was, what I would.” (Meister Eckhart, sermon 32) For years after the time that we begin school we are occupied with stuffing our minds with the prefabricated pieces of the current socially-specific dogmatic scientific worldview. Taken from the german word “to understand”, “begreifen” which is formed from the verb to touch, implies that one would merely stay on the surface of the material and not reach deeper levels of comprehension. Using this definition of surface-level “understanding” (“begreifen”) would necessitate a “shrink to fit” mentality, meaning the process of tweaking to fit in into a particular schema of current thought. “Understanding” is no longer an existential procedure; instead it is a shelving of thought into a pre-formed rule system. 11 Scientific-rational “understanding” is a very convenient and can lead to practical achievements such as loud speakers, compositional techniques, and chocolate factories. However, it has nothing to do with reality, but instead, just like an aseptic glove, it prevents contact with it. In other words: scientific rational “understanding” draws a blurry film over reality, so that the mind, laden with rational knowledge, is only able to perceive a hazy image of this reality. For this reason, it does not matter whether the rational thought is of religious origin (regardless of sect) or of scientific origin (regardless of sect): rational thought can never transcend its borders, whether it is theological or scientific. There is no principle difference between the biblical hypothesis that an old man with a white beard created the world in a few days and the Big Bang Theory. Both are rational models of explanation, they differ only in ther complexity, that is, the length of their logical sequence of arguments. The boundary of these logical sequences of arguments becomes, on the one hand, a white-bearded man, and on the other hand, a scientific term (e.g. the big bang). However, the actual comprehension of reality begins beyond these boundaries. All cultures and their religions have been able to use their respective arts as windows through the barrier of the rational mind to the reality beyond rational thought. The religious ceremony in the sacred space lies at the heart of every religion: the sacred space functions as a place to step outside 12 of space into endlessness. The ritual is the time-space that was composed in order to step outside of time into eternity. In every age, only the greatest achievements were good enough to serve religion. Throughout their long history, churches have been wise enough to understand that great art has this transcending power, regardless of whether the artist accepted the rules of the church or not. The fundamental pre-condition for experiencing music is to remain open in order to see and and hear only what there is to see and hear. The “seen” and “heard” should not be misunderstood as ciphers that call to mind saved information. The tones are strong enough in and of themselves, and do not need (musicological or other) help. Plato wanted to ban certain modes or scales in his ideal republic because their direct effect was too strong. The audiences in Plato’s Greece were not so thoroughly armored through musiciological learning that their ears were plugged. I think that a mass is not a theological rational discussion of the bible. Instead, its goal and prerequisite is not to fill the mind with thoughts and pictures, but to make it empty and poor, for blessed are those that are poor in spirit, and thereby free. 13 Auszug aus Klaus Langs Notizbuch (vollständige PDF-Datei auf der CD enthalten) 14 Excerpt from Klaus Lang’s notebook (complete pdf file on CD) 15 i went and i returned. it was nothing special. rozan famous for its misty mountains; sekko for its water. 26 © 2006 col legno Musikproduktion GmbH © 2006 IEM Graz © 2005 ORF, musikprotokoll 2005 Distribution See our website www.col-legno.com Producer Alexander Kraus, col legno Executive Producer IEM Graz – www.iem.at ORF, musikprotokoll 2005 Recording Producer Heinz Dieter Sibitz Soundengineer Christian Michl Recorded October 8–9, 2005 Recording Location Mausoleum, Graz, Austria Publishers Zeitvertrieb Wien Berlin Texts Klaus Lang Translations Erin Gee, Klaus Lang, Katja Ziehmayer (E), Martine Passelaigue (F) Photographs Nora Scheidl Design Concept Circus.
