Objective
Success criteria
To be able to learn, by using all 4 skills,the four points of the compass.
To be able to locate the stadia of the 2014 World Cup on a map of
Brazil.
I can read and say the points of the compass.
I can locate stadia on a map of Brazil.
I can write simple sentences to describe the location of each stadium,
its capacity and the date it was built.

Resources / Differentiation
Begin by playing nord, sud, est, ouest ;
Flashcards/signs with the four
compass points.
Allocate sides of the room to the four compass points, teacher calls
out direction and children – who are standing- must turn to face the
correct way. Can get children “out” if they face wrong way or are
the last to face the correct way. The faster it is played the more
challenging (and fun!). Can ask more able pupils to take on role of
caller.
Children can repeat the words as they are called to practise the
pronunciation.
Introduce written word by using flashcards – can they label the
sides of the room accordingly – look for cognates. Talk partners –
can label on whiteboards first
Speak in sentences, using familiar
vocabulary, phrases and basic
language structures.
Labelling stadia on a map orally
Show children map of Brazil labelled with the locations of the
stadia. Children to label map to show stadia.
Model orally the sentence to describe the location of a stadium. ie
Porto Alegre est dans le sud du Brésil.

Powerpoint to show locations using
key data from website.

features and patterns of the language.
Describe places orally and in writing
Read carefully and show
understanding of words, phrases and
simple writing.
Using their knowledge of other compass points, children build more
sentences orally (Dans l’est, dans l’ouest, dans le nord, dans le
centre du Brésil)
Discuss the use of the l apostrophe – can they come up with a
rule/reason why it is used with est and ouest?
Point out the homophones est (is) and est (East)
Outline map of Brazil to label with
stadia. (Worksheet 1)
Children use framework to write sentences about the locations of
the stadia.
Writing framework to complete
sentences. (Worksheet 2)
Extra
Children research stadia from FIFA website – looking at location,
capacity and when stadia were built (cognates).
Further research about the stadia eg what national team plays
there? History of the stadia, geography of the locations, distances
to travel etc.
Using MLG Football Fever – vocabulary associated with the
stadium eg ticket office, tunnel, changing roms etc.
Plenary
Present ideas and information orally to
a range of audiences.
Children to present their powerpoints.
Quick fire quiz using photos of stadia to identify and describe.
