IN MEMORIAM
Le président et les membres du bureau ont le regret de faire part
du décès de Madame Christiane HOOGSTOEL survenu à Etterbeek
(Bruxelles) le 23 décembre 2008 au terme d'une longue maladie. Issue
de la branche anversoise d'une famille de gens de loi du Pays de Liège,
les FABRI, elle était née à Berchem (Anvers) le 29 mai 1923.

you that Ms Christiane HOOGSTOEL passed away on December 23,
2008, in Etterbeek (Bruxelles), after a long illness. She was from the
Anvers branch of the FABRI family, many of whose members were well
known in the field of law in the Liège area.
Licenciée en philosophie et lettres (groupe Histoire), Christiane HOOGSTOEL entama en 1950
une longue carrière administrative au ministère des Affaires étrangères, et fut notamment, de 1971 à
1974, déléguée belge à la conférence des Nations Unies sur les droits de la femme. Elle dirigea ensuite
au service de la Noblesse et devint de ce fait, conseiller héraldique du ministre des Affaires étrangères
; elle exerça en même temps les fonctions de membre et greffier du Conseil héraldique (jusqu'à la
dissolution de celui-ci en février 1996). Elle avait atteint en 1986 le grade de premier conseiller
(exceptionnel à cette époque pour une femme dans l'administration) et fut admise à l'honorariat en
1988. Elle était commandeur de l'Ordre de la Couronne, officier de l'Ordre de Léopold.
Élue académicienne (ès qualités) lors de l'assemblée générale de Zürich du 11 septembre 1977
(fauteuil 47), si elle a participé à de nombreux congrès et à la plupart des colloques internationaux de
l'AIH, elle n'y a toutefois présenté que deux communications : Usages funéraires héraldiques dans
différents pays, Muttenz, 1978, et Essai de classification des brisures utilisées par les lignages
bruxellois, Spolète, 1987. Dans le cadre de ses fonctions officielles, elle a rédigé la préface de deux
armoriaux de la noblesse belge contemporaine ; on retiendra aussi sa participation active et sa
contribution à la publication de l'ouvrage publié à l'occasion du 150e anniversaire du Conseil
héraldique : une étude sur Le droit nobiliaire et le Conseil héraldique = Het adelsrecht en de Raad van
Adel : 1844-1994 et un article sur le fonctionnement du service de la noblesse. Christiane HOOGSTOEL
a eu une influence certaine sur le choix de leurs armoiries par les nouveaux anoblis.

Généalogie magazine
Depuis plusieurs mois cette revue, la « Bible » des généalogistes français propose à ses lecteurs, sous
la plume d’Arnaud Bunel (auteur entre autre d’un Armorial illustré de l’Académie française ; d’un
Manuel d’héraldique napoléonienne (sous forme de cd-rom) et d’un volumineux Armorial illustré de
l’épiscopat français (2400 pages couvrant la période 1589-1789), une initiation à l’héraldique, vivante,
