he Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) is all about research, guidelines, continuing medical education and making a difference in
respiratory health, right? Right. But – it’s also about people. About the
people who make it all happen.
Last year, the CTS Long-Term Planning (LTP) Committee reexamined how we recognize leaders and others who make a difference
in the CTS and in our profession. They promptly endorsed our current
major recognition lecture award, the CIHR-ICRH/CTS Distinguished
Lecture in Respiratory Sciences,which recognizes outstanding investigators (jointly with the ICRH). However, the Committee also determined that it was time to bring other changes, and to introduce new
awards. It became official – our awards program needed a revamp!
Accordingly, the LTP Committee created the following awards:
CTS Honorary Lecture
The Committee recommended the creation of the CTS Honorary
Lecture Award, as a successor to the Christie Memorial Lecture. The
Christie Memorial Lecture Award, established in 1985, had served us
well, allowing us to recognize individuals who made significant contributions to research, education and clinical excellence. The lecture
honoured the memory of one of the major leaders in respiratory
research and education in Canada, Dr Ronald Christie.
Nevertheless, the LTP Committee believed we should create a
more versatile award that would allow us to create named lectureships,
as required and appropriate, in honour of other CTS members. The
new lectureship enables a different named designation allowing us
more flexibility in recognizing awardees on a yearly basis. It could, for
example, be used for posthumous recognition of CTS members.
The CTS Honorary Lecture was thus launched in the fall of 2013,
and awarded for the first time, at the 2013 CHEST Conference, to Dr
Donald Cockcroft.
CTS Dedicated Service Award
The Committee also chose to broaden our recognition to community
respirologists who play a vital role in respiratory health and in the
CTS, but who are less likely to be recognized through our current lecture awards. The new CTS Dedicated Service Award will honour
individuals who enhance clinical care in their community; demonstrate exceptional dedication and service to respiratory health; are
known for their compassion and the support they bring to colleagues
and patients; and have promoted a culture of collegiality and collaboration.
We look forward to presenting this inaugural award in 2014, at a
time and occasion most appropriate to honouring the recipient.
CTS Distinguished Achievement Award
Finally, the Committee created the CTS Distinguished Achievement
Award, to honour individuals (including non- members) who, during
their career, demonstrated exceptional leadership and service, and a
commitment to furthering the mission and objectives of the CTS. The
award recipients will have shown outstanding initiative and a commitment to supporting collaboration in the advancement of lung health,
and will have been recognized as persons who have been inspirational
to others.
This award will be presented for the first time at the Canadian
Respiratory Conference in Calgary, Alberta (April 24 to 26, 2014).

(SCT) se consacre à la recherche, aux lignes directrices, à la formation médicale continue et aux interventions pour faire progresser la
santé respiratoire. Pourtant, tout tourne autour des individus, qui rendent tout cela possible.
L’an dernier, le comité de la planification à long terme (PLT) de la
SCT s’est penché de nouveau sur sa structure d’hommages aux leaders
et à d’autres individus qui ont des effets positifs sur l’organisme et la
profession. Il a rapidement approuvé le principal prix hommage de
conférence, la Conférence émérite ISCR-IRSC/SCT en sciences respiratoires, qui salue des chercheurs exceptionnels (conjointement à
l’ISCR). Le comité a toutefois décidé d’apporter des changements et
de créer de nouveaux prix. Il l’a décidé officiellement : il fallait réorganiser le programme de prix!
Ainsi, le comité de la PLT a créé les prix suivants :
Conférence honorifique de la SCT
Le comité a recommandé la création du prix de la Conférence honorifique de la SCT, en remplacement de la Conférence commémorative
Christie. Fondé en 1985, le prix de la Conférence commémorative
Christie nous a bien servi, car il a permis de souligner d’importants
apports à la recherche, à l’enseignement et à l’excellence clinique. Ce
prix commémorait le docteur Ronald Christie, l’un des principaux
leaders de la recherche et de l’enseignement en santé respiratoire au
Canada.
Néanmoins, le comité de la PLT était d’avis qu’il fallait créer un
prix plus polyvalent qui permettrait d’établir des postes de conférenciers sous divers noms, selon les besoins, pour rendre hommage à
d’autres membres de la SCT. Le nouveau prix de conférence permet
une désignation différente et une plus grande souplesse dans les hommages annuels aux lauréats. Par exemple, il pourrait permettre
d’honorer des membres de la SCT à titre posthume.
La Conférence honorifique de la SCT a été annoncée à l’automne
2013. Le prix inaugural a été décerné au docteur Donald Cockcroft
lors du congrès CHEST de 2013.
Prix de la SCT pour un service dévoué
Le comité a également décidé d’élargir les hommages aux pneumologues en milieu communautaire, qui jouent un rôle essentiel en santé
respiratoire et au sein de la SCT, mais qui sont moins susceptibles
d’être honorés par nos prix actuels. Le nouveau prix de la SCT pour un
service dévoué rendra hommage à des individus qui font progresser les
soins cliniques dans leur collectivité, qui font preuve d’un engagement
hors pair et d’un service exceptionnel en santé respiratoire, qui sont
réputés pour leur compassion et leur soutien envers leurs collègues
et leurs patients et qui favorisent une culture de collégialité et de
collaboration.
Nous avons hâte de décerner le prix inaugural en 2014, au moment
et à l’occasion qui conviendront le mieux.
Prix de la SCT pour une réalisation distinguée
Enfin, le comité a créé le prix de la SCT pour une réalisation distinguée afin de saluer des individus (y compris des non-membres) qui,
pendant leur carrière, ont fait preuve d’un leadership et d’un service
exceptionnels ainsi que d’un engagement envers l’avancement de la
mission et des objectifs de la SCT. Les lauréats auront démontré un

The nominations process for the 2014 Dedicated Service Award
and Distinguished Achievement Award were launched in December
2013 and are now closed. We look forward to announcing the winners
in an upcoming CTS e-bulletin.
All of us, together, are making a difference in respiratory health.
We will never be able to recognize everyone, but these new awards are
a big step in the right direction.
Many thanks to George Fox, Chair of the LTP Committee, Denis
O’Donnell, Past Chair, as well as all committee members, for taking
the time to revitalize our recognition program. Well done!

Le processus de mise en candidature du prix pour un service dévoué
et du prix pour une réalisation distinguée de 2014 a été lancé en
décembre 2013 et est à présent terminé. Nous dévoilerons le nom des
lauréats dans un prochain numéro du cyberbulletin de la SCT.
Ensemble, nous apportons des changements positifs en santé respiratoire. Nous ne pourrons jamais souligner l’apport de tous ceux qui
le méritent, mais ces nouveaux prix sont un grand pas dans la bonne
direction.
Nous tenons à remercier George Fox, président du comité de la
PLT, et Denis O’Donnell, ancien président, ainsi que les membres du
comité, d’avoir pris le temps de relancer notre programme de reconnaissance. Bon travail!
