ABSTRACT The purpose of this letter is to analyze the light propagation in a simple waveguide structure used for future optical interconnects, and also to compare the existing modeling approaches. The operation of the recently developed waveguide is theoretically analyzed using a simple approach. In the transfer matrix line approach, the waveguide structure is considered as electrical line system that is analyzed using this technique. A condition for perfect spectral behaviour of a waveguide device is formulated and its validity is verified. The theoretical and experimental results are mutually compared, and the operation characteristics of this novel device are briefly compared. MICROCAVITIES ENHENCED IN OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE W. AROUAa, D. They have thus received considerable attention for laser applications where high quality factors (Q's) and low thresholds have been reported. Optical cavities can also serve as building blocks for optical signal processing applications. By combining resonators appropriately, it is possible to achieve sophisticated control of the device wavelength response. In this paper, we report the modeling of the optical properties of silicon resonators for use as wavelength-division multiplexed optical signal channel dropping filters. Testing the developed model will be discussed by comparing the obtained results with other approach's results. THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF DEFECTS ON WAVEGUIDE STRUCTURES D. GAMRAa, W. AROUAa, F. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The use of optical waveguides in optical telecommunication offers numerous advantageous features such a small size, ruggedness, potential for realizing various optical functions on a single chip, multichannel etc. Usually a waveguide component is used by being inserted into a waveguide. Therefore it is necessary to estimate the effect of the inevitable inhomogeneity, the total losses of the incorporated devices. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of excitation of guided waves and to evaluate the behavior of the defects. The validity of using the developed model will be discussed by comparing these results with other approaches. DENSITY, GLASS TRANSITION (TG) AND FT-IR STUDIES OF LI2O-PBO-P2O5 GLASSES M. ABID, M. Their physical, thermal and spectroscopic properties such as density, glass transition temperature and IR spectroscopy have been investigated. The density increase and molar volume decreases with increasing PbO content. DSC measurements give the variation of Tg from 305 0C (LiPO3) to 398 0C (Pb (PO3)2). FTIR spectroscopy shows that PbO acts only as a network former in these glasses. When lead oxide is added to lithium metaphosphate glass, structures consist of PbO4 and PO4 tetrahedra linked together by P-O-Pb bonds. The formation of P-O-Pb bons, which replace P-O-...Li+ bonds while keeping the same fraction of P-O-P bonds, in crease the crosslink density in the glass network and, therefore, increase Tg and decreases the molar volume. ABOUDa and L. STOCHb a Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Al-Fateh University, P. O. Box 13579, Tripoli, Libya E-mail: [email protected] b University of Mining and Metallurgy, 30-059 Krakow, Poland ABSTRACT Due to the close similarity between the IR spectra of silica and aluminosilicate glasses, and the overlap of the main characteristic vibrational bands of silicate and phosphate glasses on one hand, and the resemblance of the IR spectra of SiO4 and AlPo4 tetrahedral units because of their structural anology, and also the presence of all phosphorus in the form of PO4 tetrahedral units in aluminophosphosilicate glasses on the other hand [1], and to confirm the results on the effect of AlPO4 tetrahedral structural units on the infrared vibrational spectra for the aluminophosphosilicate glasses on the other hand [2], silica was made to replace all AlPO4 in an aluminophosphosilicate base glass. A 72SiO2, 20MgO, 8Na2O (molar %) glass was prepared. The obtained glass and its crystallization behavior was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The added SiO2 was found to lower the wavenumber of the main stretching vibrational band , the same way Al2O3 does, thus counterbalancing the increment caused by P2O5 [2]. The first phase to crystallize at high temperature was forsterite. With decreasing temperature both forsterite and enstatite coexist with rather different morphologies. ABSTRACT Water swellable gels are widely used in personal care products because of their ability to soak up a hundred times their own weight in liquid. They are particularly efficient in improving the efficacy of the absorbent core of such products. In this study we especially considered their major elements that are the hydrogel polymer and the fibrous core. We were interested to the absorption behavior of two fibrous absorbent cores, one in wood fluff pulp and the other in short cotton fibers. In these pads the gel has been dispersed within the cellulosic core. At first, we measured the absorption capacity and retention under load of water, of synthetic urine and of a physiological saline solution (0,9% NaCl). In a second left, we followed the absorption kinetics of same liquids by these absorbing structures. At last, we explain that absorption of fluid and fluid retention under load in a fibrous core-gel systems are a complex function of the pad density, of the concentration of gel present and of the nature of fluid imbibed. We showed that the polymer is, therefore, the driving force of the absorption mechanism of these complex hygienic structures The results of the association of fibrous core with starch remained modest and under our expectations. But however, a pad with starch absorbs and holds better than an empty pad The absorption phenomenon is limited in presence of salt solutions: the capillary network of fibers or of the polymer collapses in presence of salts. The salt will screen the electrostatic interactions and decrease the counter ions osmotic pressure, this leads to a deswelling. Key Words Absorption capacity - Retention under load - Absorption rate - Swelling kinetics fluff pulp polyelectrolyte hydrogel. THE EFFECT OF X-RAY AND GAMMA RADIATION ON THE SPECTROSCOPIC, THERMAL BEHVIOUR AND A. C. CONDUCTIVITY OF 1,1`,2,2`ETHANETETRACARBOTETRATHIOSEMICARBAZIDE. I. S. Al – Naimi a and M. E. Kassem b a Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, Qatar University, P.O. Box 2713, Doha, Qatar E-mail: [email protected] b Physics Department, Faculty of Science, Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt ABSTRACT 1,1`, 2,2`- Ethanetetracarbotetrathio semicarbazide was prepared, its structure was characterized by 1H-NMR, IR and GCMS. Different gamma radiation doses were used in the range (0-20) Mrad. The infrared measurements showed that the interaction between N-H bending and C-N stretching was affected by gamma radiation. The 1H-NMR measurements indicated that the effect of gamma irradiation on the amide proton is smaller due to the canonical form. Analysis of a.c.conductivity revealed significant displaced localized charge carriers from the original position as a result of gamma and X-ray irradiation with the mechanism of hopping transition. The TG analysis for the sample heated at different rates (2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 oC min -1), showed that the activation energy can be estimated and compared with that obtained from a.c. measurements. ABSTRACT A superconducting compound YBa2Cu3O7 was prepared from a raw-material containing CuO, BaCO3 and Y2BaCuO5 phases. Several samples have been submitted, in sealed oxygen atmosphere, to an additional heat treatment. They were characterised by XRD, SEM with BSE and EBSP analyses, iodometric titration, resistivity versus temperature and magnetisation measurements. The XRD and EBSP analyses have shown that the samples are textured along the c axis with a factor of 57%. This texture is obtained by a plastic compression at room temperature. The SEM analysis has revealed a significant change in the microstructure after each heat treatment. The magnetisation curves parallel and normal to the c axis have confirmed the fact that samples are textured. The deduced critical current density has a value of 10000 A/cm2 at 4,20K for an applied field of 1T. This value is situated between those measured in non-oriented grains (1000 A/cm2) and the ones oriented (1000000 A/cm2). The results are discussed by a correlation between the texturing and anisotropy factors. REFERENCES: [1] R.J. THE GENERAL APPLICABILITY OF THE “LOG METHOD” FOR THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF ALLOYS AYAD A. ABDULWAHED and KAMAL Z. SALEEB Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Al-Fateh University, P. O. Box 13430, Tripoli, Libya E_mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The “log method” equation σ = A εB + C ln (ε / εo) where A, B and C are parameters and εo is the yield strain; proposed lately to express the stress-strain behavior of certain materials, was checked for applicability to dual phase and normalized carbon steels. Tensile specimens of a HSLA steel were subjected to different intercritical heat treatment regimes to obtain structures with different volume fraction of martensite ranging between 0.33 and 0.63. Similar specimens of AISI 1008, 1018 and 1045 were normalized to ferritic- pearlitic structures. The specimens were subjected to tensile testing at ambient temperature and strain rate of 2x10-4 s-1. The obtained data were checked for best fitting to the “log method” equation using non-linear fitting techniques. The fitting was almost perfect and the fitting parameters were observed to follow certain patterns revealing characteristic physical significance. The flexibility of the equation to fit data representing various starting structures is analyzed on the basis of the deviator term εC ln ε, which relates the “log method” equation to the widely used Hollomon equation. The specimens were subjected to either: a) recrystallization annealing at 1000 oC for 1hr.alone; or b) recrystallization annealing as in a) followed by nitriding at 680 oC for 6 hrs.; or c) recrystallization annealing followed by sensitization in argon atmosphere at 680 oC for 6 hrs. The data fitting to the proposed equation was found good particularly at the low strain range. The results widens the range of applicability of the equation to approximate stress-strain curves for specimens subjected to various surface treatments. REFERENCES [1] A.A. Abudulwahed and K.Z. This, can be done by adopting a simple supervising method. This observation can be done automatically using imaging means developed by the actual technology. If this knowledge can result from a theoretical study in case of simple loads and simple geometrical shapes, for the current loading cases, we usually use performed experimental and theoretical methods. Photoelasticimetry witch is an optical method permitting to know quickly the spatial stresses distribution and their values of some piece in order to perform its mechanical state. The morphological characteristics of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and polystyrene (PS) latex particles in the presence of the prepared amphipathic copolymer as nonionic emulsifiers were studied. It was found that the concentration of amphipathic copolymer affected the morphological properties of the latex particles i.e. the number average particle diameters (Dn) decreases with increasing the concentration of amphipathic copolymer. In the case of emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate polymer particle latices, it was found that the reaction’s order of Nt (number of particles) with respect to amphipathic concentration [E] was found to be 0.1, 2.05 and 0.89 for 65, 73 and 81wt% POE respectively, while in the case of emulsion polymerization of styrene, the reaction’s order of Nt with respect to [E] was found to be 1.82, 2.1 and 1.66 for 65, 73 and 81 wt. POE respectively. The polydispersity index (PDI)(Dw/Dn) was close to 1.0 in the case of polyvinyl acetate latices while it has the value ranges between 1.05-1.2 in the case of polystyrene latices. Emphasis is placed on the determination of the minority carrier diffusion length L in the particular case for which the sample thickness is quite lower than the true value of L. The model is derived from the theoretical basis with the assumption that incidental light flux varies linearly in the explored range. This model fits very well to experimental data points obtained from both FZ and CZ mono-silicon crystals. We showed that in the case of thin wafers, SPV technique is not adapted to L measurements. It leads only to extracting a short length proportional to the sample thickness. However, if the recombination velocities and the minority carrier diffusion coefficient are known, then we could reach the true value of L by a computer calculation. For this purpose, We have made polished sections of clinker nodules from both kilns I and II. The sections were etched by hydrofluoric acid vapour (40 %) or a solution of nitric acid in alcohol (0.25 %) and were examined by reflected light. C3S crystals were prismatic, covering most of the observed surface. They may contain some round C2S inclusions. C2S crystals were idiomorphous, and normally rounded. Some C2S grains showed striations. They often constitute nests. The interstitial matter compounded by C3A and C4AF seemed bright. In higher magnification, distinction can be made between both phases. In the second part, the composition of the four main phases of the clinker was estimated by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the microprobe. The intervals of variations of oxide phases have been determined. The selection of analysis is based on the ratios CaO/SiO2, CaO/Al2O3 and Al2O3/Fe2O3 depending on the phase. Sometimes, these ratios differ from their theoretical values. However, We have faced some difficulties in the analysis of C3A and C4AF because they are scarce and fine-grained. ABSTRACT In order to improve the adhesion of the zinc oxide coatings on polyethylene naphtalate (PEN) films, intermediate thin alumina coatings were deposited between the two materials. The two oxide coatings were deposited successively using r.f. magnetron sputtering. Their compositions determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry depend narrowly on the sputtering parameters (r.f power, oxygen partial pressure, and total pressure). Oxygen rich alumina was obtained when high plasma pressures were used. FTIR spectra showed that the overstoichiometries resulted from the presence of hydroxyl groups in the coatings. The O/Zn atomic ratio was found also to increase with oxygen and total pressures. X-ray diffraction patterns at low incidence angles show that alumina coatings have an amorphous structure whatever the sputtering conditions. The zinc oxide films were crystallized in the würtzite form with a preferred orientation along the [002] direction. The crystallinity was improved when the power applied to the target is increased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed a good agreement with the Thornton’s structure zone model. A progression from a dense structure to a columnar one was observed when the kinetic energy of the sputtered particles decreases. The coatings were found to be under a state of compression originating mainly from intrinsic contribution. The optical constants of our coatings were determined by ellipsometry and uv-visible spectrometry measurements. They vary in a wide range depending on the deposition conditions. The adhesion of alumina, zinc oxide, and zinc oxide/alumina on PEN has been evaluated by the peeling test. The nature of the rupture was studied by fluorescence spectrometry and X-ray energy dispersion spectrometry (XEDS). ABSTRACT When organic polymers and inorganic materials are combined at the molecular level they form a composite materials of inorganic materials and organic polymers. Addition of inorganic materials as filler in organic polymers gives modified and highly functional materials. In these cases, organic polymers and inorganic materials form independent phases in which the interaction at the interface plays an important role. The molecular level dispersion of clay is impossible in the organic matrix. But modifications of clay particles surface by using silane coupling agents bridges the incompatibility between the organic polymer segments and the inorganic clay. This paper describes organic-inorganic polymer hybrids prepared by the emulsion procedure of methyl methacrylate in water in presence of the clay powder. The clays used are natural and modified kaolins. The homogeneity of the obtain hybrid suggests that the organic polymer chains and the inorganic particles were blended at the molecular level. This may be due to covalent or strong hydrogen bonding between COOH and silanol groups. Characterisations of the hybrids are supported by FT-IR spectra and 13C-1H MAS- NMR spectroscopy. ABSTRACT The structural properties of linear block copolymers in solution have sparked considerable interest and have been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical investigations. [3]- [8] However, their ring homologous have received only limited attention mainly because of the difficulty in the synthesis of high molecular weight monodisperse rings. This report has been sparked by the recent light scattering measurements carried out by Amis et al. [1], [2] on a unique diblock copolymer ring and its linear diblock and triblock homologous composed of polystyrene and polydimethylsiloxane. In this report, the theoretical approach has been based upon the method so-called the random phase approximation (RPA) by placing the previous systems in the same conditions of temperature, concentration, composition and masse than those used experimentally by Amis and others. [1], [2] Its main purpose is to provide a theoretical formalism which is useful for a systematic analysis of scattering data obtained from block copolymers of arbitrary architectures and some suggestions are made concerning data treatment. Discrepancies between ring and linear block copolymers are discussed in terms of the thermodynamic and structural properties. In particular, contrary to as proved by Amis and coll., [1], [2] the present study has shown that these gaps, between radii of gyration of ring diblock copolymer and linear triblock precursor, being enough large, it should be possible to detect them by light scattering measurements. Key Words Ring and linear copolymers, light scattering, apparent virial coefficient, apparent radius of gyration. REFERENCES [1] E. J. Amis, D. F. Hodgson, Polym. Prep. 32, (1991), 617. [2] E. J. ABSTRACT In recent years, block copolymers have been used to improve the compatibility of two immiscible homopolymers.[1] For example, polystyrene-block-polybutadiène (SB) diblock copolymer has been used to improve the compatibility between polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE), thereby improving the mechanical properties of PS/PE blends. Compatibilization of two immiscible homopolymers by addition of a diblock copolymer has recently been studied theoretically.[2]- [6] For this purpose, this communication is devoted to the study of the phase behavior and the scattering properties from ternary mixtures of ring and linear homopolymers A/B and corresponding diblock copolymer A-B in melt within the framework of the mean field approximation using a method first developed by Leibler.[7] Emphasis will be placed on discussing the stability limits for the macrophase and microphase separations. This report has been prompted by that carried out, ten years ago, by Hashimoto and his collaborators,[8], [9] on the same properties in corresponding linear systems. In particular, the effects of architecture on such properties are investigated. An analyzis of the architecture effects on such properties shows that the competition between macro- and microphase separations transitions depends not only on the concentration of copolymers, but also on their architecture. Moreover, this work reveals that the mixtures containing cyclic copolymers present a more pronounced compatibility, as compared to linear counterparts systems.[10]-[17] As concluding remarks, it is worthwhile to point out that such investigations are important for the understanding of the stability of polymers allows and improvement of the performances of material composites under stringent environmental conditions where these materials admit practical applications. Key words Ring (or linear) copolymers (or homopolymers), light scattering, macro- and microphase transitions, enhancement compatibility, phase behavior coefficient, RPA. USE OF WASTE FROM QUARTZ SANDS QUARRIES A. This raises the problem of disposal of these wastes and its effect on the environment. Among the various proposals directed towards attenuating the ever increasing managerial and environmental problems regarding the growing volume of waste from this quarrying activity, is the use of these wastes as raw materials for industry. In the present study, we first present an investigation on the chemical and mineralogical characters of wastes coming from the processing of a quartz sands quarry. Secondly, the clay obtained from these wastes has been used in the formulation of mixes to produce porous supports for agriculture and ceramic wall tiles. REFERENCES [1] H. Bihri and M.Abd-Lefdil Thin Solid Films, 354,5 (1999) [2] D. CIZERON b a Laboratoire de Sciences et Génie des Matériaux, Département de Métallurgie, Ecole Nationale Polytechnique, Alger, ALGERIE. b Laboratoire de Structure des Matériaux Métalliques, Université de Paris-Sud, FRANCE.
