Garage Sale for the
Saint-Élie Sector
The Comité animation/promotion of the Chemin de Saint-Élie
development project is currently working on organizing a
huge garage sale on June 9 for the area under development
between Dion and Hamel roads. For this event, sector residents and business people will be invited to set up in the IGA
Bouchard parking area to create a fun activity for families in the area.

The Borough’s garage sale weekend takes place June 9 and 10.
Dates to keep in mind:
May 25: Deadline for advertising the addresses of participating

By the time you read these few lines, spring will have arrived,
or at least be at our doorsteps. Excited, we’ll want to take on
several projects, such as bringing out the patio set, preparing
the lawn we’re so proud of, or giving our backyard a new look.
All this is so that we can fully enjoy the great outdoors in our
own yards.
Unfortunately, our busy lives sometimes get in the way of getting these projects finished on schedule. We leave these
tasks uncompleted and promise ourselves we’ll get back to
them as soon as possible. When we leave our properties, we
should take care to avoid making it easy for perpetrators. By
this we mean leaving a window open – to air out the house,
for example, or forgetting to put the construction tools for our
new patio in a safe place, or even putting the lawn mower
away, thinking that we’ll get back to those jobs the next day.
All of these scenarios are very inviting for perpetrators. We can
protect ourselves from these wrongful acts by taking a few
simple actions that will make all the difference: let’s provide
our neighbours with a clear view of our property so that they
may detect the presence of prowlers; keep our driveways
well lit; lock all of our doors and windows; have valued items
engraved to make them less attractive to thieves, etc.
As the saying goes “there’s strength in numbers!” We’d love

DISCOVER YOUR BOROUGH
The first cottages along Little Lake Magog were built in 1893
and belonged to L. H. Olivier, N. T. Dussault and the Club St-Jean
(fishing club). Over the next few years, a dozen other families
followed suit. At the end of the 19th century, Little Lake Magog
became a very popular vacation spot, even though it was
rustic and not easily accessible. The construction of a train station in 1899 improved access to the site and contributed
to the small community’s development. Prior to the 1920s,
train was the best mode of transportation to reach Little Lake
Magog. At the time, car travel was a risky endeavour due
to uneven roads, and packing at least one spare wheel was
considered a good idea...
In 1893, a first hotel was built called Hôtel Gosselin. The
establishment changed its name to Hôtel Vendôme in 1901,
then to the Lake Park Hotel in 1912. In addition to the beach,
vacationers enjoyed a slide, a diving board (after World War I),
a tennis court, and inside the hotel, a fireplace in a large sitting
room. Over the years, other lodging establishments were built
to welcome guests who did not own property, including the
Manoir du Lac (1936) and the Auberge des Pins (1947).
As modern conveniences such as electricity developed and
reached Little Lake Magog the summer vacation destination
slowly became a site for permanent residents. In 1945, the
town of Petit-Lac-Magog (legally named in 1917) became
Deauville, named after a French resort. This name change was
not popular with everyone and its residents continued to call it
Petit-Lac-Magog for several years.
Rock Forest–Saint-Élie–Deauville
Part of the Magog River, Little Lake Magog became a very popular vacation destination in the region in the late 19th
century. As with many other vacation sites in Quebec, the lure of
clear water, nature and abundant wildlife for hunting and fishing
attracted many. But who benefits from the shores of Little Lake
Magog these days? In the early decades, most vacationers were
middle class families from around the region. In the late 1890s,
two types of vacationers stood out: those who owned basic or
well-equipped cottages (mainly Francophones), and those who stayed at the hotel for several days or weeks (mainly Anglophones). Later, the railway network, improvements to the roads,
and a wider range of activities made it possible for those with
more modest means to enjoy day trips.

Club Optimiste de Rock Forest
ORGANIZATIONS
CELBEBRATING ANNIVERSARIES
On June 22, 1977, a new organization was born in the town
of Rock Forest thanks to Clément Pruneau, founding President
of the Club Optimiste de Rock Forest. Sponsored by the Club
Optimiste de Magog, the new club opened with 42 members,
all willing to devote themselves to working for the youth of
Rock Forest.
This year, the following organizations will be celebrating the year they were founded.
Since that time, more than 150 members have crossed paths
and given their time to benefit local youth. Several of them
have held important positions within the organization in
Quebec’s southern district: as governor, assistant governor,
lieutenant governor, district director, president, or member.
• 10th anniversary of the Centre communautaire Richard-

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them
and thank them for their involvement in improving our community’s quality of life year after year.
• 10th anniversary of the Comité Arts et culture de Rock Forest–Saint-Élie–Deauville
To highlight the Club’s 35 anniversary, we are inviting all
interested former club members to participate in our reunion.
• 25th anniversary of the Corporation de développement économique, social et communautaire de Rock Forest (CDESC)
This gathering will be held on Saturday, June 16 at the Base
de plein air André-Nadeau. Former members should expect an
invitation.
