The aim of this bulletin is to report new health events occuring in foreign countries and presenting a potential risk for Indian Ocean populations. It does not intend to provide
an exhaustive review of international alerts. The health events, collected from different official and non official sources are intended for the Indian Ocean. Despite our efforts
to produce exact informations, some potential errors could occur : readers have to use these data with cautious. Neither the Indian Ocean Commission, nor the ORS and the
CIRE is liable for the use that may be made of the informations contained in this bulletin.

Nipah virus outbreak

Nipah virus infection (henipavirus family) is
an emerging zoonosis. It causes different
clinical pictures from influenza like syndrom
to encephalitis. It can also causes severe
disease in animals such as pigs. The natural
host
of
the
virus
are
fruit
bats
(Pteropodidae family).
Since 2001 in Bangladesh, 152 people were infected by Nipah virus, 113 died.
