6-8 avril 2011: EMBO meeting: Advances in Stem Cell research, Institut Pasteur, Paris
Stem cell biology progresses very rapidly, in terms of identification of stem cells, their basic biology and role in development and
regeneration. Unraveling these mechanisms leads to new concepts and strategies for clinical intervention, including disease modeling,
drug screening, and cell therapy. The conference will bring together experts in basic research, with stem cell biologists grappling with the
complexity of cell fate determination, bioimaging, and those using stem cells in patients.

Highlight of the Month: Maximilian Fürthauer, Group leader
- What is your background? I did my PhD in the lab of Christine and Bernard Thisse at the
IGBMC in Strasbourg, studying the dorso-ventral patterning of the zebrafish embryo. While
this research was focused on the concepts that underlie pattern formation, I then wanted to
gain insights into the cell biological mechanisms that govern development. In addition, I had
become fascinated with the power and elegance of Drosophila genetics. As a postdoc I
joined therefore the lab of Marcos González-Gaitán, initially at the Max Planck Institute for
Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, then at the University of Geneva. There I studied the
importance of endocytic trafficking for the regulation of Delta/Notch signaling in the context of asymmetric cell divisions in flies and fish. In
particular I was able to establish a novel live imaging approach that allows to visualize endogenous Delta ligands and Notch receptors in
living tissue.
- Where is your lab? My lab is located at the Institute of Developmental Biology and Cancer (ICDB) in Nice since 2010. My lab laso has

- What is the favorite model organism of your lab? For me there is no ideal model
organism. Rather than dealing with the limitations of any given model, we use
zebrafish and Drosophila in a complementary fashion. Our approach is not to focus
on the development of a particular organism, but to exploit the advantages of each
system to study a given biological question.
- What are your research interests? Our research at the interface between cellular
and developmental biology aims to understand the importance of the architecture of
cellular membranes for the regulation of developmental signaling. In particular we want to understand how membrane shape, membrane
domains and dynamic membrane remodeling affect the activity of developmental signaling molecules. Of key importance for our work is
the use of various imaging techniques. For me, sitting in front of a microscope is just the most exciting thing in science.
- What is the New Frontier in Developmental Biology according to you? I think that the
obvious next challenge is to get an integrative view of embryonic development that extends
from biology to chemistry and physics. The next frontier to overcome is our own traditionally
mono-disciplinar training.
- Since when are you an SFBD member? I am a member of the SFBD since 2006.
