Page 14 Title: Developing Successful Schools (DSS) 2011 Sponsored by the Prince Edw ard Island Teachers’ Federation Changing with the Profession: Guidelines for School Leaders Date, Location & Time July 4 - 7, 2011 Description: For too many years, educational change has been imposed on teachers through waves of reform that ignore professionals, overtake each other and wash over the schools, leaving only superficial changes in narrow areas of the curriculum behind them. This institute points to and draws on research on leading edge and high performing practice from around the world that produces positive improvement, dynamic innovation and increased results by working with the teaching profession as enthusiastic partners in the change and innovation process. Facilitator: The resource person this year is Andy Hargreaves. Andy Hargreaves is the Thomas More Brennan Chair in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. Before moving to Boston, he taught primary school and lectured in several English universities, including Oxford. Prior to coming to Boston College, he was co-founder and director of the International Centre for Educational Change at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto. His more recent books are Sustainable Leadership (with Dean Fink-2006), Change Wars (with Michael Fullan-2008), and The Fourth Way (with Dennis Shirley-2009). Again this year the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is making available twelve grants to assist participants who wish to attend. This workshop will allow you to explore a few of the more common AT programs (i.e. Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Co:Writer, WordQ/SpeakQ, etc.) used in Island schools. You will have a chance to see the programs in action, and learn more about the capabilities of the programs. You will also have some hands-on time with these programs in a relaxed atmosphere where you are not expected to be doing twenty other things at the same time. The AT programs to be included in the session can be negotiated based on the interests of those who will be attending. Lors de cette formation, on discutera des cinq principes fondamentaux de ces deux programmes. Ensuite, les enseignants expérimentés modéliseront des leçons de lecture et d’écriture ainsi que les sept étapes de l’oral. Après la modélisation, les nouveaux enseignants planifieront et présenteront des leçons. Par la suite, ils recevront une rétroaction. Les enseignants recevront leurs guides et auront l’occasion d’examiner plusieurs textes. Teachers will be using a number of technological tools to understand, discover and achieve more in reading and writing workshop. Tools such as Google Docs, StoryBird, Voice Thread, Glogster, MS Publisher, blogs and other web based tools will be used. Strategies regarding how to teach readers in a digital world will be discussed. Participants will have registered for a Google account. We will spend time building actual lessons and exploring the many ways Smartboard can enhance the learning experience. Supporting Independent Reading, Responding and Writing (K-6) - Summer Intitute Date, Location & Time July 25 & 26, 2011 (2 day session) Description: Delta Prince Edward Hotel, Charlottetown (Sessions both days: 9:30 to 3:30; lunch on your own from 12:00 to 1:00. Institute packages given out: July 25 from 9:00 to 9:30. Tony’s book Good Choice! Will be available to purchase for $22.50) In this two-day Summer Institute: • • Tony Stead will explore proven methods to assist students make wise decisions when selecting materials for independent reading and responding to literature. Tony will also show how to open the door to the rich world of non-fiction writing. Facilitator: Tony Stead, dynamic speaker from Australia and author of Literacy Place for the Early Years, Moving Up with Literacy Place, and Good Choice! Audience: English and French K - Grade 6 classroom teachers, resource teachers, administrators, staff developers, pre-service teachers, secondary educators and other literacy educators. Data will be manipulated using formulae and analyzed through the use of charts and graphs. Merging information from Excel into letters, labels, emails and envelopes will be explored. (Hosted by the New Brunswick Teachers’ Association) CONTACT is a regional conference sponsored by the Atlantic Provinces Teachers’ organizations. It is a combination of plenary and concurrent sessions for classroom teachers getting prepared to return to school. The CONTACT theme is “An all Inclusive Learning Opportunity for Atlantic Teachers” and will feature sessions on collaborative work, assessment for learning, Youth-at-Risk, Parler d’identité à l’école de langue française: stratégies et outils. If so, you will be participating in the Intensive Kindergarten Support model. Autism Specialists will be available to collaborate with you and provide guidance throughout the year. The Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement is helpful to teachers and schools. It is a very useful assessment tool for planning classroom reading instruction and it is administered to identify children for Reading Recovery™ intervention. Teachers who attend will receive training and materials on the seven tasks of the Observation Survey: Letter Identification, Word Reading, Burt Word Test, Concepts About Print, Writing Vocabulary, Hearing and Recording Sounds in Words and Running Records.
