Changing with the Profession: Guidelines for School Leaders

Description:
For too many years, educational change has been imposed on teachers
through waves of reform that ignore professionals, overtake each other and
wash over the schools, leaving only superficial changes in narrow areas of
the curriculum behind them. This institute points to and draws on research
on leading edge and high performing practice from around the world that
produces positive improvement, dynamic innovation and increased results by
working with the teaching profession as enthusiastic partners in the change
and innovation process.
Facilitator:
The resource person this year is Andy Hargreaves. Andy Hargreaves is the
Thomas More Brennan Chair in the Lynch School of Education at Boston
College. Before moving to Boston, he taught primary school and lectured in
several English universities, including Oxford. Prior to coming to Boston
College, he was co-founder and director of the International Centre for
Educational Change at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in
Toronto. His more recent books are Sustainable Leadership (with Dean
Fink-2006), Change Wars (with Michael Fullan-2008), and The Fourth Way
(with Dennis Shirley-2009).

The Federation has twelve spaces available on a first come, first served
basis. Again this year the Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development is making available twelve grants to assist participants who
wish to attend. These grants will be for $400 each and will greatly assist
participants.

Helping Your Special Needs Students with Assistive Technologies:

Are you a Resource Teacher that needs some additional time to become
comfortable with the latest assistive technologies that can benefit your
special needs students? This workshop will allow you to explore a few of
the more common AT programs (i.e. Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking,
Co:Writer, WordQ/SpeakQ, etc.) used in Island schools. You will have a
chance to see the programs in action, and learn more about the capabilities
of the programs. You will also have some hands-on time with these programs
in a relaxed atmosphere where you are not expected to be doing twenty
other things at the same time. The AT programs to be included in the
session can be negotiated based on the interests of those who will be
attending.

Nouveaux enseignants de français intensif et de français approfondi

Description :
Le but de cette session est de former les nouveaux enseignants qui enseigneront
le français intensif ou le français approfondi au mois de septembre.
Lors de cette formation, on discutera des cinq principes fondamentaux de ces
deux programmes. Ensuite, les enseignants expérimentés modéliseront des
leçons de lecture et d’écriture ainsi que les sept étapes de l’oral. Après la
modélisation, les nouveaux enseignants planifieront et présenteront des leçons.
Par la suite, ils recevront une rétroaction. Les enseignants recevront leurs
guides et auront l’occasion d’examiner plusieurs textes.

Reading and Writing Workshop for the 21st Century:
This institute will focus on how teachers can integrate technology into their
teaching of reading and writing. Teachers will be using a number of
technological tools to understand, discover and achieve more in reading and
writing workshop. Tools such as Google Docs, StoryBird, Voice Thread,
Glogster, MS Publisher, blogs and other web based tools will be used.
Strategies regarding how to teach readers in a digital world will be discussed.
Participants will have registered for a Google account.

The focus of this session will be getting comfortable with your Smartboard
building Notebook lesson plans and creating active lessons. We will spend time
building actual lessons and exploring the many ways Smartboard can enhance
the learning experience.

• Uploading lessons to your blog/wiki

In this two-day Summer Institute:

Tony Stead will explore proven methods to assist students make wise
decisions when selecting materials for independent reading and responding
to literature.
Tony will also show how to open the door to the rich world of non-fiction
writing.

This SAS session will focus on the basics of setting up a class from the ground
up, and how to efficiently administer the system from copying courses from
one year to another to creating multi-part assignments, rubrics, and a class
web page. This will be a hands-on session with ample opportunity for individual

This workshop will introduce how to navigate within the ribbon interface in
Excel 2007 and will demonstrate formatting of data. Data will be manipulated
using formulae and analyzed through the use of charts and graphs.
Merging information from Excel into letters, labels, emails and envelopes will
be explored.

CONTACT is a regional conference sponsored by the Atlantic Provinces
Teachers’ organizations. It is a combination of plenary and concurrent sessions
for classroom teachers getting prepared to return to school.
The CONTACT theme is “An all Inclusive Learning Opportunity for Atlantic
Teachers” and will feature sessions on collaborative work, assessment for
learning, Youth-at-Risk, Parler d’identité à l’école de langue française:
stratégies et outils.

Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement - Summer Intitute

This institute will focus on the Observation Survey of Early Literacy
Achievement.
The Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement is helpful to teachers
and schools. It is a very useful assessment tool for planning classroom reading
instruction and it is administered to identify children for Reading Recovery™
intervention. Teachers who attend will receive training and materials on the
seven tasks of the Observation Survey: Letter Identification, Word Reading,
Burt Word Test, Concepts About Print, Writing Vocabulary, Hearing and
Recording Sounds in Words and Running Records.
