Licensed Practical Nurses - Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers
Licensed Practical Nurses Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are healthcare professionals who primarily work alongside nurses and doctors. LPNs have the necessary skills and autonomy to participate in the assessment of a person’s state of health and in carrying out of a care plan. They also provide nursing and medical care and treatment to maintain or restore health and prevent illness, and provide palliative care. There are more than 23,000 Licensed Practical Nurses working in Quebec They work primarily in university hospital centres and health and social services centres (CSSS), as well as in hospitals, residential and long-term care centers and local community health centres (CLSC). They also work in private homes, medical clinics, research labs, pharmacies and nursing agencies. The workweek for LPNs is normally 36.25 hours and their schedule is variable (days, evenings and nights). In the public sector, pay depends on seniority and is established under collective labour agreements. Specialized training program OIIAQ admission conditions The LPN professional training program runs for a total of 1,800 hours and leads to the awarding of a vocational studies diploma (DEP) by the ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec (MELS). Prospective OIIAQ members must successfully complete the Health, Assistance and Nursing Care program and must hold a vocational studies diploma (DEP) issued by the MELS or a diploma recognized as equivalent by the executive committee of the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers auxiliaires du Québec (OIIAQ). Offered in vocational training centres and a private school, the Healthcare, Assistance and Nursing training program focuses exclusively on the acquisition of theoretical and practical nursing care knowledge, enabling LPNs to play a key role in patient care. To be admitted into the training program, you must meet the requirements established by the MELS. The OIIAQ’s disciplinary council is responsible for sanctioning any members who violate the Code of Ethics or any laws or regulations governing LPNs’ professional practice. In addition, the OIIAQ’s professional inspection committee oversees members’ skills. Established under the Professional Code, this mandatory committee provides general oversight of LPNs’ professional practice. Licensed Practical Nurses: members of a professional order Respecting people and ensuring quality of care are LPNs’ core priorities LPNs are represented by a professional order. Every day, LPNs provide nursing care to the population of Quebec. The OIIAQ seeks to protect the public while overseeing its members’ professional practice. In accordance with Quebec’s Professional Code, the OIIAQ fulfils its mandate in various ways. Under provincial regulations (Règlement sur le comité de la formation de la profession d’infirmière auxiliaire), the OIIAQ’s committee on training is mandated with examining questions relating to the quality of LPNs’ training in accordance with the respective and complementary skills defined by the OIIAQ, secondary schools and the MELS. In particular, the training committee ensures that the LPN training program meets the requirements of the healthcare network and adequately prepares prospective LPNs for professional practice.
