Long Live the King!
In the year 1499, after a lengthy and somewhat uncomfortable stay in the
Tower of London, Edward Plantagenet, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury, was
put to death. With his execution, Henry VII (Tudor), the King of England at
that time, eliminated the last male member of the Plantagenet family.
Edward was the last of the “Angevin Kings”, of the House of Anjou, and held a
legitimate claim to the English crown. The first Angevin King to sit upon the
English throne had been Henry II in 1154.
Today, the city of Angers and its residents demand compensation for this act of prejudice which
cost the city the Crown Jewels of England.
Rightful heirs of the Plantagenet family, residents of the city of Angers in France are taking action by
means of a petition that shall be delivered to the Queen of the United Kingdom during the city’s
Accroche-Cœurs Festival (7th to 9th September 2012). With this petition, the city will demand that the
British Crown Jewels be returned to Angers.
The Accroche Cœurs festival, which takes place every year in Angers, brings together nearly 200
street-theatre groups and 250,000 revellers. During the festival, the city becomes one huge open-air
theatre and it is the occasion for festival-goers to celebrate a different theme each year before going
back to work after the summer holidays. The “Plantagenet Petition”, the movement for the
restitution of the British Crown Jewels, will culminate during this festival which has taken “the North”
as its theme for this year.
Angers, Live Large
Angers is the sixteenth largest city in France. Located in the West of France, one and a half hours
from Paris, it is a popular tourist destination at the heart of the Loire Valley. The city houses many
medieval castles (it is situated on the Loire Valley Chateaux Trail), it is classed as a Unesco world
heritage site and also hosts various important cultural events throughout the year.

free for all the public. The Premiers Plans cinema festival has been showcasing European cinema in
Angers for over twenty years. The Tempo Rives concerts create the sound of summer in the city; ten
free, open-air concerts featuring well-known artists as well as local talent. Artaq is a festival that
celebrates street art through performances and exhibitions in collaboration with local communities.
The city of Angers is young at heart; with over 30,000 students it has two universities and seven
technical higher education centres, all with international links. It is an enterprising city and home to
many businesses of international renown, as well as Végépolys, an international business cluster
dedicated to the field of horticulture.

Le roi est mort, vive le roi !
En 1499, après une longue détention dans la tour de Londres, Edouard Plantagenêt, comte de
Salisbury et de Warwick est exécuté. Le roi d'Angleterre de l'époque, Henri VII Tudor, éliminait ainsi
de la prétention au trône le dernier représentant des Plantagenêt, aussi appelés "rois angevins" du
fait de leur lignage direct avec les comtes d'Anjou. Parmi eux, c'est Henri II qui le premier monta sur
le trône anglais en 1154.
Aujourd’hui, Angers et ses habitants réclament réparation de ce préjudice qui coûta à la ville les
joyaux de la couronne d’Angleterre.
Héritiers moraux des Plantagenêt, les Angevins se mobilisent autour d’une pétition* qui sera remis à
la reine d’Angleterre à l’issue du festival des Accroche-cœurs les 7, 8 et 9 septembre prochain. Par
cette pétition, Angers demande aujourd'hui que lui soient cédés les joyaux de la couronne
d’Angleterre.
Cette initiative trouvera son point d’orgue lors de diverses manifestations qui seront organisées à
Angers du 7 au 9 septembre. Accessoirement aura lieu ces mêmes jours à Angers le festival des
Accroche-cœurs qui réunit chaque année près de 200 compagnies de théâtre de rue et 250 000
festivaliers. Immense théâtre à ciel ouvert, les Accroche-cœurs sont l’occasion pour les habitants de

fêter la rentrée sur un thème donné. Cette année, les Accroche-cœurs ont décidé d’embarquer les
festivaliers pour un voyage vers le Nord…
