OBJECTIVES OF THE FORUM ACTIVITIES OF THE FORUM FOCUS The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum was founded in March 1999 in Brussels in order to: The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum is actively involved in the preparatory, drafting and implementation stages of environmental legislation in relation to conservation and sustainable management of semi-natural habitats, with specific reference to the 1992 “Habitats” Directive and its NATURA 2000 Network. The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum focuses in particular on the designation and implementation process of NATURA 2000 sites, with specific reference to the following human activities: 1. Identify and promote, in particular towards public opinion, the role of rural stakeholders as key partners for the conservation and sustainable management of species and (semi-) natural habitats, as well as for the sustainable and wise use of natural renewable resources in the EU; ■ Forestry ■ Hunting & Game management ■ Recreational angling and sportfishing 2. Contribute to and participate in consultation processes and communication projects initiated by the European Institutions on the above mentioned issues; ■ Tourism 3. Encourage owners and managers of land, forest and water to implement at ground level the principle “conservation through sustainable use”; 4. The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum gathers representatives of mainly European and cross-national organisations representing a wide range of environmental, socio-economic and -cultural activities directly related to rural areas and renewable natural resources.
