OBJECTIVES OF THE FORUM
ACTIVITIES OF THE FORUM
FOCUS
The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum was founded in
March 1999 in Brussels in order to:
The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum is actively involved
in the preparatory, drafting and implementation
stages of environmental legislation in relation to
conservation and sustainable management of
semi-natural habitats, with specific reference to the
1992 “Habitats” Directive and its NATURA 2000
Network.
The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum focuses in particular on the designation and implementation process
of NATURA 2000 sites, with specific reference to the
following human activities:
1. Identify and promote, in particular towards public
opinion, the role of rural stakeholders as key
partners for the conservation and sustainable
management of species and (semi-) natural
habitats, as well as for the sustainable and wise
use of natural renewable resources in the EU;
■ Forestry
■ Hunting & Game management
■ Recreational angling and sportfishing
2. Contribute to and participate in consultation
processes and communication projects initiated by
the European Institutions on the above mentioned
issues;
■ Tourism
3. Encourage owners and managers of land, forest
and water to implement at ground level the principle “conservation through sustainable use”;
4. Facilitate cooperation and exchange of information
and know-how between member organisations of
the Forum.
■ Farming
The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum is assisting decision
and policy makers to better understand local
situations, to communicate efficiently with rural
resource- and stakeholders, to take into account
socio-economic elements and to achieve in this
way full implementation of workable rules and
regulations in compliance with the Lisbon and
Gothenburg objectives.

NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum
“Biodiversity through sustainable
management of renewable natural
resources”
The biodiversity and scenic beauty of Europe’s rural
areas today is to a very large degree the result
of ongoing human activities - farming, forestry,
hunting, fishing , etc.
Owners, managers and users of land, forest and
water are proud of their contribution to the conservation of nature and wildlife in Europe and wish to
continue this role of enhancing an environmental and
cultural heritage.
The NATURA 2000 Users’ Forum gathers representatives of mainly European and cross-national organisations representing a wide range of environmental,
socio-economic and -cultural activities directly
related to rural areas and renewable natural
resources.
