Ladies Day 2011 - girls only at the Volvo Demo
Centre
On Saturday, Volvo Trucks organised Ladies Day 2011 and that meant it was "girls
only" at the Volvo Demo Centre in Gothenburg. Around 100 female participants from all
over Sweden arrived to test-drive trucks and learn more about working in the haulage
industry. Ladies Day is created to motivate and encourage more young girls to focus on
the business.
Only six per cent of Sweden's 115,000 truck drivers are women. However, by inspiring
young girls who have not as yet decided to pursue a career in the industry, Volvo Trucks
is hoping to help to change these statistics.
"Ladies Day really demonstrates that women can have this as a career. However, we need
more diversity throughout the transport chain. This applies to everything from truck
drivers to different roles in the haulage industry and at truck manufacturers. People with
different backgrounds are needed, as they contribute with a new way of thinking and new
approaches. That makes working both more fun and creative for all of us," says Susanne
Frödin, Nordic marketing communications and PR manager at Volvo Trucks.
The weather on Ladies Day was fantastic and a packed programme had been organised
for the participants. Among other things, they had the chance to visit an exhibition about
Volvo Trucks, learn more about what Sveriges Åkeriföretag (the Swedish haulage
association) and the TYA (Swedish Vocational Training and Working Environment
Council) do, network with one another and, last but by no means least, test-drive Volvo
trucks. Like the sun, the smiles on the participants' faces lit up their surroundings when
they were given the opportunity to climb into the driver's seat and test everything from
the Volvo FMX to the Volvo FH16 700.
"We girls need to show that we are also very capable. Men aren't the only ones who can
do everything," said Mona Lennartsson, who had travelled all the way from Svalöv in
Skåne in southern Sweden to take part in Ladies Day.
Another visitor who had travelled a long way, Cecilia Sandstedt from Ljungby in
Småland, was thinking along the same lines.
"Women can do it - this is the proof! I am more than satisfied with today. I have met so
many new people and the truck driving was real fun. I feel that I am even stronger and I
think all of us who are prepared to take the step and enter this business are fantastic," she
said.
She is in the last year of an automotive engineering programme, focusing on transport, at
the Sunnerbo upper secondary school and she has just a couple of months left before she
starts looking for a job. There is, however, no doubt about what she is planning to do in
the future.
"It doesn't really matter what I do, as long as I can sit behind the wheel. However, if I
look a little further into the future, I would really like to have my own haulage company have my own truck and decide what I do with my time. That's what I want."
Ladies Day
Has been organised since 1999 by Volvo Trucks and, since 2003, it has been run in
collaboration with the TYA (Swedish Vocational Training and Working Environment
Council), Sveriges Åkeriföretag (the Swedish haulage association) and Svensk
Åkeritidning (the Swedish haulage association magazine). More than 200 women had
applied to participate. Out of the 100 participants, around 70 per cent were young girls
who are not yet fully established in the industry, while 30 per cent were already working
in the industry. Ladies Day is created to give the participants a more in-depth knowledge
and understanding of different aspects of the industry, to inspire them and give them an
opportunity to network.
