A textbook will be handed out on the first class.
Course Description and Objectives:
The course aims to develop basic to intermediate communication skills in French.
Through a progressive use mainly of listening, and speaking, but also reading and
writing, students will develop oral and written proficiency at a limited level within the
context of French and Francophone culture.
Expected outcomes: Proficiency level – Intermediate Low
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
A. Listening
I - Understand simple conversation on familiar or everyday topics that convey basic
information.
B. Speaking
I - Use sentence-level language, typically in present, future and past tenses and on
familiar topics related to their daily life.
C. Reading
I - Understand information conveyed in simple, predictable, loosely connected texts, such
as that found in announcements, notices, and online bulletin boards and forums.
D. Writing
I - Write in simple sentences, in present, future and past tenses, using basic vocabulary
and structures to express meaning that is comprehensible to those accustomed to the
writing of non-natives.
Course Requirements:

Class preparation, attendance, participation and homework
assignments
To succeed in the course, for each unit or lesson students are expected to:
1.
Learn the vocabulary at home
2.
Be prepared to practice the vocabulary in class with appropriate grammatical
structures
3. Practice at home the vocabulary and the grammatical structures through the
appropriate exercises in the textbook, workbook and lab manual
4.
Work at the GLCC with the tutors on related material (session mandatory)
5.
Work in class on communication and aural comprehension through video program
6. Extend the above vocabulary and sentence structures through reading, writing
everyday situations, while appreciating French and Francophone cultures
7.
Take all examinations and quizzes and do special assignments given by the
professor as scheduled
A good attendance at the GLCC will get you 2 extra points on your final grade.
Each absence will count for 2 points less on your final grade.
2. Academic Service Learning
3 services teaching English or Spanish at a French school.
Each service will give you an extra 2 points on your final grade.
3. Bi weekly Quizzes
During the semester, you will be given an opportunity to write an essay for extra credit.
This will replace the lowest grade you got on a quiz.
Grading
A's are merited by students who exceed the minimum amount of work and who do so
with distinction.
B's are merited by students who exceed the minimum amount of work in a satisfactory
manner.
C's are merited by students who complete the minimum amount of work.
D's and F's are merited by students who fail to complete the minimum amount of work.
