La galerie anne barrault est heureuse de proposer la première exposition personnelle de Stéphanie Saadé en France.
Originaire du Liban, Stéphanie Saadé est née en 1983 pendant la guerre civile. Elle occupe aujourd’hui une place sur la
nouvelle scène contemporaine libanaise. Son oeuvre se nourrit de ses séjours au Liban, comme en Chine, en passant par
la France et les Pays-Bas.
La force des oeuvres de Stéphanie Saadé est d’être à la fois conceptuelle et sensible. Cela tient notamment d’un souci
d’économie de moyens au profit d’une richesse de sens.
Impossible Love composé de deux fils, l’un partant du sol, l’autre du plafond et se rejoignant en leur centre forme une
installation minimale Ce qui est mis en valeur au-delà des moyens employés, c’est la perception de la rencontre entre ce
qui s’extrait du sol et ce qui descend du haut, rencontre rare et difficile rendue possible par l’artiste.
Au travers de Golden Memories, c’est une autre rencontre impossible qui s’opère où le passé devient le miroir du présent.
Le souvenir devenu or vient capter le présent de manière inquiétante. L’immuable et le transitoire peuvent se rencontrer
tel que dans Opposite Chain où le fer voué à disparaître et l’acier inoxydable forment une même chaîne.
Cette tension traverse l’oeuvre de Stéphanie Saadé. C’est ainsi qu’elle a intitulé son exposition En dormance, état particulier
où la vie attend de commencer.

Les graines germent dans le noir, le noir correspond à la nuit, et la nuit au rêve.
Au lieu de vendre sa vache pour dix pièces d’argent, Jacques l’échange contre un haricot. Le lendemain, comme dans un
rêve, pendant que Jacques dormait, le haricot a poussé jusqu’au ciel. Autrefois, on échangeait un diamant pour une graine
de caroube : au poids et à la taille infailliblement réguliers, la graine équivalait à un carat. Dormance, dormir, coucher,
couché. Enterrée comme les morts, dont les pieds et la tête touchent le sol, sous la terre, la graine trace lentement le
chemin du Pays Horizontal au Pays Vertical. Jacob eut un songe, « et voici, une échelle était appuyée sur la terre, et son
sommet touchait au ciel ».
La Dormance désigne une forme de vie ralentie. L’activité est réduite au minimum, et l’organisme conserve son énergie
plus longtemps. L’entrée en dormance se fait en réponse à des conditions extérieures hostiles : diminution des ressources
alimentaires, températures très élevées ou très basses, etc. Stratégie de survie, tactique discrète et silencieuse, elle permet
de résister. Faire le mort, parfois pendant des années. Que se passe-­t-­il à l’intérieur ?
Les Dormants puisent dans leurs propres réserves. Qu’est-­ce qui peut être produit dans ces conditions ?
En Dormance, le temps s’écoule différemment. Il coule dorénavant plus lentement à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur. Quel
instant faire durer ? Quel souvenir ? Le moment avant de naître, avant de grandir, peut être prolongé, peut-­être à l’infini.
Rester plus longtemps dans un passé, ou s’extraire du temps pour devenir immortel.
Dans l’espace confiné de la graine ont lieu introspection et recentrement. Comment se tenir debout au centre du monde,
et porter le monde autour de soi ? L’univers est « une sphère infinie dont le centre est partout, la circonférence nulle
part. », affirme-­t-­on, de l’Antiquité jusqu’aujourd’hui. Du centre du paradis jaillit la fontaine de Jouvence. De cette source
partent quatre fleuves, qui coulent en direction des quatre points cardinaux.
Après la dormance, l’eau coule sur la graine et la réveille. Automne, Hiver, Printemps, Été, la graine prend le risque de
mourir et réintègre les cycles du jour, de la nuit, et de la lune.

Anne Barrault gallery is pleased to propose Stéphanie Saadé’s first solo show in France.
Stéphanie Saadé was born in Lebanon, in the midst of the civil war. Today, she occupies a place on the new contemporary
Lebanese art scene. Her works are rich of her travels and her stays in Lebanon as well as in China, in France and the
Netherlands.
The strength of her work lies in it being both conceptual and sensitive. This is partly due to her use of reduced means
which benefits richness of meaning.
Impossible love, made of two threads, one rising from the ground, the other coming down from the ceiling, and joining
in their centre, forms a minimal installation. Apart from the means used, what is emphasized is the perception of the
meeting of what rises from the ground and what comes down from above, a rare and difficult encounter made possible
by the artist.
With Golden Memories, another impossible encounter takes place where the past becomes the mirror of the present. The
memory, turned to gold, absorbs the present in a disturbing way. The immutable and the transitory encounter in Opposite
Chain, where iron destined to disappear and stainless steel form the same chain.
This tension runs throughout Stéphanie Saadé’s work. She has thus entitled her exhibition En Dormance (in dormancy),
this particular state where life awaits to begin.

Seeds sprout in the dark, the dark corresponds to the night, and the night to dreams.
Instead of selling his cow for ten silver coins, Jack exchanged it for a bean. The next morning, like in a dream, while
Jacques was asleep, the bean had grown and reached the sky. In yesteryears, a diamond was exchanged for a carob seed:
with a weight and a size unfailingly regular, the seed was equivalent to one carat. Dormancy. To sleep, lying down. Buried
like the dead, whose feet and head touch the ground, under the earth, the seed slowly traces the path from the Horizontal
Country to the Vertical Country. “[Jacob] had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top
reaching to heaven”.
Dormancy indicates a form of slowed-down life. Activity is reduced to the minimum, and the organism can keep its
energy longer. Moving into dormancy occurs in response to difficult or hostile external conditions: the diminution of
food resources, very high or very low temperatures etc. A survival strategy, a discreet and silent tactic, it enables one to
resist. Playing dead, sometimes for years. What happens in the inside?
The dormant draws on his own resources. What can be produced in these conditions?
In dormancy, time flows differently. It runs more slowly inside than outside. Which moment to prolong? Which memory?
The moment before being born, before starting to grow up, can be extended, maybe forever. One can remain longer in a
chosen past, or extract oneself from time to become immortal.
In the confined space of the seed, introspection and recentering occur. How to stand in the centre of the world and wear
the world around oneself ? “The universe is an infinite sphere whose centre is everywhere, and whose circumference is
nowhere”, as has been stated since antiquity to nowadays. At the centre of paradise springs the Fountain of Youth. From
it, four rivers flow towards the four cardinal points.
After dormancy, water flows on the seed and wakes it up. Autumn, winter, spring, summer, the seed takes the risk of
dying, and joins again the cycles of the day, the night, and the moon.
