Formed in 2006 in the south of France, Toumaï is a fivepiece band that plays “psyche-fonk metal” which is a
fusion of groove and heavy sound.
The band was named after the skeleton of an ancestor of
Man which was found in Chad by archeologists because
they were attracted by the idea of a common and
ancient root for all men.
Toumaï is based in the south of France in Aix-en-Provence
and was formed around vocalist Antoine and brothers Clem
and Jules on drums and guitar, soon to be joined by Martin on keyboards and Guilhaume on
bass. These experienced musicians decided to blend their different influences to create original
compositions. The music is a mixture of metal, jazz, progressive rock, classical music,
alternative music, funk and ragga. Their main influences are bands such as Primus, Mr Bungle,
Tool, Pantera, Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down, early Red Hot Chili Peppers and
Gojira.
This collaboration gave birth to a
metal fusion consisting of
groove,
funk,
and
progressive rock. The band
decided to call it “psyche-fonkmetal” to define their style.
Through
improvisation
and
spontaneity this mixing of genres
creates a coherent, compact and
original
sound.
Funky
licks
morph into metal riffs inviting
the listeners to indulge in the
spirit of Toumaï.
Toumaï has played more than 50 gigs and won several awards between 2008 and 2013. They
have worked with determination and through experience have built a strong identity on stage.
They recorded their two first demos in a studio in 2007 and 2009. Since then there have been
two line-up changes: Célia replacing Martin on keyboards in 2010 and Chris replacing
Guilhaume on bass in 2012.
Toumaï has just released their first album « Sapiens Demens ». This powerful and raging
new CD is a hot and spicy mixture of psyche fonk metal that diverts attention, disturbs
awareness and moves consciousness to another level.

Sapiens Demens, represents for Toumaï the actual state of mankind today. It is a man both
wise and mad. The name refers to the primal scream of the wise man who knows the madman
is responsible for his world and his culture.
Lyrics are written in English and deal with human condition, madness, and social issues. They
can be read as an allegory or self mockery. Words are delivered through various styles: sung,
spoken, whispered, screamed, and roared. The music stands for itself and gives meaning to
different stories.
Sapiens Demens is not a concept album; however it contains the idea that we can find
madness in wisdom which is in madness. It draws the listener onto a sonorous path built of
heavy grooves, breaks and different universes that resonate. Sapiens Demens represents the
maturity and artistic choices of a band ready to release their first album.
For the artwork Toumaï called upon contemporary artist Nicolas Cluzel to create a visual
response to the concept of Sapiens Demens.
« You got to understand
with tools of Sapiens
we commit the murders of Demens »
To achieve maximum broadcasting, the band has released their album under Licence
Creative Commons. This first opus will be fully available for downloading in its
entirety. A digipack CD including a 24 page booklet is available for purchase on the
band website.
