Penal Reform International (PRI) is an independent non-governmental organisation that develops and
promotes fair, effective and proportionate responses to criminal justice problems worldwide. We
promote the rights of detainees to fair and humane treatment. We campaign for the prevention of torture
and the abolition of the death penalty, and we work to ensure just and appropriate responses to children
and women who come into contact with the law. We have consultative status at the United Nations
(ECOSOC), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the African Commission, the African Committee on the
Rights and Welfare of the Child, and the Council of Europe. Penal Reform International (PRI) is a
founding member of the World Coalition against the Death Penalty, and has been a member of the
Steering Committee since 2004.
