The alleviation of human error, whether design or intrinsically human, continues to be the most important problem facing aerospace safety. Jerome Lederer Profile ATNS Overview ATNS is responsible for air traffic control in approximately 10% of the world’s airspace. Over and above traditional air traffic control, we also provide aeronautical information for planning purposes, search and rescue coordination services, the maintenance of a reliable navigation infrastructure, training services, and many more. Our Vision: To be the preferred supplier of air traffic, navigation, training and associated services to the African continent and surrounding regions. Our Mission: To provide safe, orderly, expeditious and efficient air traffic, navigation, training and associated services. It aims to add value by designing safe and efficient instrument and non-instrument procedures that will allow optimisation of operational capabilities. This service is conducted in accordance with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) Standards and Recommended Practices as complemented by ISO9001:2000 Quality Standards. ISO 9001:2000 Certification was achieved in 1998, and is maintained. Airspace Design This division has the capability to design and review all airspace types as defined by ICAO. These include, but are not limited to, control zones, terminal manoeuvring areas and flight information regions. Furthermore, air routes based on conventional navigation aids as well as RNP-restricted routes can be designed to client requirements. Engineering Services ATNS plans, specs, acquires and implements the South African national aeronautical communication, navigation and surveillance system. We offer professional consultative services to other air navigation service providers in support of their national development programmes. These services can be provided on an hourly, job, or turnkey basis: • Communication, navigation and surveillance system design • Coverage planning and site selection • Radio frequency planning • Communication, navigation and surveillance system specification • Acquisition management services • Project management services Training The Aviation Training Academy (ATA) utilises computer-based training, radar simulators, engineering laboratories and 2-D/3-D aerodrome simulators to the highest industry and safety standards. Since April 2000, the ATA has trained more than 8 000 international and local delegates. Various training programmes are offered to prepare graduates for a successful professional career in air traffic services and engineering support. To most people, the sky is the limit. To those who love aviation, the sky is home. Anonymous ATNS Products & Services Upper Airspace Management The objective of the UACC is to provide for the seamless regional provision of CNS/ATM services, above 24 500 feet. The concept of regional centralisation of these types of services has been successfully tested and implemented overseas. ATNS can provide Upper Airspace Management to various states in Africa, with harmonised infrastructure. VSAT/NAFISAT The SADC VSAT Network has been operational since 1998 and has eliminated all communication deficiencies in the SADC region. This network fulfils the region’s communication requirements in terms of the ICAO Africa Indian Ocean (AFI) plan. It has succeeded in integrating a regional communications network, contributing to increased communication, allowing for greater safety on air traffic movements, and is financially sustainable. WGS-84 Survey ATNS Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) has the operational and technical capability to provide a professional consultancy and surveying service in the field of Aeronautical WGS-84 surveying. This service is conducted in accordance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) as complemented by ISO9001: 2000 Quality Standards. ISO 9001:2000 Certification was achieved in 1998, and is maintained. AIS Documentation ATNS’ aeronautical information services provide a professional consultancy and production service in aeronautical documentation. The division provides a complete integrated Aeronautical Information Package (AIP) to ICAO Standards, and to the customer’s requirements. Billing Services ATNS can offer billing services to individual States for collecting aircraft movement fees from non-IATA (International Air Transport Association) member airlines, enhancing the States’ ability to maintain their Air Traffic Management infrastructure. The ATNS billing system allows for setting up a separate user-customisable billing environment, and for capturing and processing aircraft landing records and en-route information, in order to bill appropriately.
