GAROYIAN Marios
PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
NICOSIA CONSTITUENCY,
PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY (DIKO)
Born in Nicosia on 31 May 1961. He has one daughter and one son. Political scientist.
PARLIAMENTARY ACTIVITIES
At the parliamentary elections of 21 May 2006 he was elected Member of the House of
Representatives standing as a DIKO candidate in Nicosia. He was elected President of the
House of Representatives for the remainder of the Ninth Term of Office of the House.
He is ex officio chairman of the Committee of Selection and chairman of the Ad Hoc House
Committee on Rules of Procedure and of the Special House Committee on Declaration and
Examination of Financial Interests.
He is also president of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Branch of the Commonwealth
Parliamentary Association and of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Group to the InterParliamentary Union.
POLITICAL - SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
He was president of the “Anagennisi” student union in Italy (1981) and of the National Student
Union of Cypriots in Perugia (1983) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Pancyprian
Student and Young Scientists Federation.
He was also president of the District Committee of the Youth Organisation of DIKO (NEDIK) in
Nicosia and secretary of Unionism of the Labour Department of the party.
He was director of the President’s Office of the House of Representatives from 1991 to 2001,
during the presidency terms of Alexis Galanos and the late Spyros Kyprianou. He was director of
the Press Office of the President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and Deputy Government
Spokesman from 2003 to 2006.
Since 1988 he is a member of the Central Committee of DIKO and since 1997 a member of the
Executive Bureau of the party. On 22 October 2006 he was elected president of DIKO and was
re-elected on 14 March 2009.
He is a member of the National Council, the supreme advisory body to the President of the
Republic on the Cyprus problem.
Publications
He has published a series of articles on the Cyprus problem and the European Union, as well as
on various topics of wider public interest in the Cyprus and foreign press. As an international and
a political analyst he regularly co-operated with the Cyprus and Greek mass media.
Honorary awards
The Hellenic Republic has awarded him the “Supreme Commander of Honour” decoration and
the
Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia has awarded him the "Knight of Cilicia” decoration.

Né à Nicosie le 31 mai 1961. Père d’une fille et d’un garçon. Titulaire ès Sciences politiques.
ACTIVITES PARLEMENTAIRES
Aux élections législatives du 21 mai 2006, il se présente comme candidat du DIKO à Nicosie
et se fait élire Membre de la Chambre des Représentants. Il est élu Président de la Chambre
des Représentants pour le restant de la Neuvième Législature de la Chambre. Il est président
d’office de la commission de sélection, président de la commission ad hoc pour le règlement
et président de la commission spéciale pour la déclaration et l’examen des intérêts financiers.
Il est également président du Comité exécutif de la branche chypriote à l’Association
parlementaire du Commonwealth, ainsi que du Comité exécutif du Groupe de Chypre à
l’Union interparlementaire.
ACTIVITES POLITIQUES – SOCIALES
Il a été président de l’union des étudiants “Αnagennisi” en Italie (1981), président et de l’Union
nationale des étudiants chypriotes à Perugia (1983) et membre du Comité exécutif de la
Fédération panchypriote des étudiants et des jeunes scientifiques.
Il a également été président du comité régional de l’organisation des jeunes du DIKO (NEDIK)
à Nicosie et secrétaire du syndicalisme à la division du travail du parti.
Il a été directeur du Cabinet du Président de la Chambre des Représentants de 1991 à 2001,
durant les mandats présidentiels d’ Alexis Galanos et du feu Spyros Kyprianou. Il a été
directeur du Bureau de presse du Président de la République Tassos Papadopoulos et porteparole suppléant du gouvernement de 2003 à 2006.
Depuis 1988, il est membre du Comité central du DIKO et, depuis 1997, membre du Bureau
exécutif du parti. Le 22 octobre 2006, il a été élu président du DIKO et réélu le 14 mars 2009.
Il est membre du Conseil national, le corps consultatif suprême du Président de la République
sur le problème chypriote.
PUBLICATIONS
Il a publié divers articles sur le problème chypriote et l’Union européenne, ainsi que sur
différentes questions d’un intérêt public plus large, dans la presse chypriote et étrangère. En
tant qu’analyste international et politique, il a collaboré régulièrement avec les médias
chypriote et grec.
PRIX HONORIFIQUES
La République Hellénique lui a remis la décoration du “Commandant d’honneur suprême”.
Le Catholicossat arménien de Cilicie lui a remis la décoration du “Chevalier de Cilicie”.
