Canadian Contributions to the
Northern Ireland Peace Process
He is enthusiastic about this. He will range over the Canadian participation, like
General de Chastelain, De-commissioner for arms stored by the IRA and the
Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), and Judge Cory, former Supreme Court Justice of Canada, and other Canadians.
Also, he has some anecdotes about the participation of Tony Blair, PM of England, Bertie Ahern, PM (Taoiseach)
of Ireland, David Trimble, PM , Northern Ireland , Bill Clinton, Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness of Sinn
Fein/IRA. Ray Bassett spent 5 years on Northern Ireland and, with others, generated the terminology submitted for
the agreement of the contending parties. He was directly active in the negotiations and, following the signing of the
Agreement (Good Friday Agreement), he became the Republic of Ireland representative (effectively ambassador
though that term was not used because of political protocol) in Belfast for 5 years to ensure the agreement was
adhered to by all parties.

Cela le passionne. Il parlera de la participation canadienne telle que celle du

Canada, ainsi que d’autres Canadiens. Il a en outre des anecdotes au sujet de la participation de Tony Blair,
premier ministre britannique, Bertie Ahern, premier ministre (Taoiseach) d’Irlande, de David Trimble, premier
ministre, Irlande du Nord, de Bill Clinton, Gerry Adams et Martin McGuinness du Sinn Fein/IRA. Ray Bassett a
passé 5 ans sur le dossier de l’Irlande du Nord et, avec d’autres, a produit la terminologie présentée aux parties en
présence. Il a participé activement aux négociations et, après la signature de l’accord (l’accord du Vendredi saint),
il est devenu représentant de la république d’Irlande (en fait, ambassadeur bien que ce terme n’ait pas été utilisé
pour des raisons de protocole politique) à Belfast pendant 5 ans pour veiller au respect de l’Accord par toutes les
parties.
