This is the quantity of carbon released into the atmosphere per kilowatt produced in South Africa. In comparison, France produces 56 g/kW, Germany 300 g and Switzerland 92 g. New initiatives set out to make up for this poor South African track record. The company Carbon Footprint offers to finance renewable energy projects, selling carbon credits to the highestpolluting companies (read “Carbon Footprint, an initiative for compensating for national CO2 emissions” on www.actu-cci.com). In Germany, automobile equipment suppliers are the first to be targeted by Chinese industrialists. In mid-March, the Chinese automobile spare part manufacturer Lingyun Industrial Group took over the German Kiekert, the world’s leading supplier of systems for vehicle doors. This takeover of the inventor of centralised locking is no random decision. It takes place after the takeover last summer of Medion (Aldi’s supplier for electronic-IT equipment) by the Chinese company Lenovo, or else that of Vensys, a manufacturer of wind turbine installations, by the group Goldwin. The acquisition of Kiekert is one of a series of takeovers in the domain of automobile subcontracting. No less than four other German businesses have been the object of a Chinese takeover in under the space of a year. This is how CQLT (Chongqing Light Industry & Textile) got its hands on the body seal manufacturer Saargummi, and Joyson on Preh (control systems); spare part manufacturers KSN Casting and Sellner have also gone under Chinese leadership.
