Learning Focus: Repertoire: Pitch Music and Literature This month we are beginning our study of pitch. We are learning how to m ake and recognize high and low sounds. W e are also learning about the difference between our speaking voices and our singing voices. We are using a Native American folk tale called “How Chipmunk Got His Strips” to help us hear and experience the difference between our high and low voices. Ask your child to say, “The sun is going to rise! Ooh!” using a chipmunk voice, and “The sun will not come up! Humph!” using a bear voice, and then ask which voice is high and which voice is low. W e will be playing singing games like “Bake a Cake,” “Good King Leopold,” and “Helicopter Pilot” to practice using our speaking and singing voices and to develop confidence as soloists! 1st through 3rd Grade students will have fun working on vocal technique and tone-‐matching through stories and singing games; 4th and 5th Grade students will learn how melody and harmony can be created using Boomwhackers and other pitched percussion instruments. The 4th and 5th Grade students will be working on some fun and festive holiday m usic to perform for our holiday concert. Our performance of Teresa Jennings’ “Rhythm of the Season” and “Whacky Sounds” is sure to get your toes tapping! Within the next month, all students should know that… Pitches move ________ and _________. Their sounds are ________ and _________.
