Deathcore accentué
Avec la sortie de leur nouvelle (et excellente) galette, les
quebecois de Despised Icon étaient de nouveau sur la route. Le
groupe phare de la scène deathcore francophone est cette fois
tête d'affiche du célèbre Never Say Die Tour, ce qui est pour
nous l'occasion de nous entretenir avec leur chanteur.

Maune (Rock’N’Balls) : Pour commencer, c'est la seconde fois que j'ai l'occasion
de vous voir en tournée pour le Never Say Die Tour, la dernière fois c'était avec
Unearth et Parkway Drive en tête d’affiche. Je me demandais quel sentiment cela
procure de passer du milieu de l'affiche à la tête d'affiche d'une même tournée en
à peine un an d'intervalle.
Alex Erian : C'est définitivement surprenant, c'est un peu de pression mais c'est la
dernière date de la tournée donc je peux dire que tout s'est bien passé. Tous les soirs
l’affluence était comparable à celle de la tournée de Parkway Drive alors c'est
définitivement encourageant en ce qui nous concerne. Mais en général la tournée à été
parfaite si ce n’est que de notre côté cela a été un peu plus difficile car nous étions en
tournée aux états unis juste avant celle-ci. On a tourné un mois là bas puis on a eu 2
jours de repos avant de venir en Europe et commencer celle ci alors là ca nous fait 2
mois de tournée consécutifs et on a hâte de se reposer un peu.
M : Comment avez-vous réagi quand vous avez vu avec quels groupes vous
partagiez la tournée ? Des groupes comme Horse The Band et Iwrestleabearonce
peuvent surprendre.
Alex : Les groupes sont différents, il y a des groupes comme Oceano qui vont plus
nous ressembler et Horse the Band qui nous ressemblent moins. Je pense que c'est ce
qui fait le charme d'une tournée, cette diversité. Nous sommes plus des amateurs de
musique que des amateurs de metal alors j'aime voir ce genre de mélange. De notre
côté on écoute beaucoup de punk, de rap et de metal donc amener cette mentalité
mixte dans la tournée je crois que c'est une bonne chose et ca permet de convenir à
plus de personnes.
M : Vous êtes sur la route car vous défendez votre nouvel album, « Day Of
Mourning », que j'ai trouvé nettement supérieur au précédent. Le travail des
ambiances est incroyable. Avez-vous abordé son écriture différemment pour
arriver à ce résultat?
Alex : Et bien en fait c'est la première fois qu'on écrivait en tournée. Ca fait quand
même 5 ans qu'on tourne non stop alors les quelques jours, semaines ou mois qu'on
passe à la maison, enfin quand je dis moi ca n'arrive pas souvent (rires), c'est bien de
pouvoir faire autre chose que de rester concentré sur Despised Icon jour après jour.
C'est bien de décompresser, déconnecter un peu. On s'est mis à apprécier tous ces
petits moments là, ce qui fait qu'on a composé en tournée. On avait un peu peur de
changer de façon de procéder mais une fois qu'on a commencé à écrire, les idées se
sont bousculées assez rapidement, tout le monde était motivé, tout le monde était
inspiré et sur la même longueur d'onde alors tout le processus d'écriture s'est vraiment
bien déroulé. En plus d'habitude c'est en studio qu'on a quelques petits problèmes, de
petites embuches, mais cette fois ci tout s'est vraiment déroulé relax. Tout le monde
dans le groupe est très content de notre performance, c'est notre quatrième album donc
on a un peu plus l'habitude d'enregistrer, on fait de la musique tous les soirs en
tournée, on s'améliore donc tout naturellement. Pour résumer, je pense que le nouvel
album c'est une accumulation de tout ca.

Au niveau de la musique elle même, beaucoup de nos influences datent de l'époque
old school, que ce soit Suffocation ou Dying Fetus et je crois qu'on voulait un peu
rendre hommage à tous ces groupes là qui on fait beaucoup dans les années 90. En
plus les jeunes d'aujourd'hui ne connaissent pas forcément ces groupes, alors on
entend beaucoup parler de Death-core mais, mais plus le public se fait jeune et moins
il semble réaliser que si tu mélanges un peu de Madball et de Suffocation sur lesquels
tu rajoutes quelques inspirations de Meshugghah ou The Dillinger Escape Plan et voilà
tu obtiens ce style qu'ils pensent innovant (rires). En ce qui nous concerne c’est surtout
des guitares un peu plus metal, une batterie un peu plus rapide, plus de solos de
guitare, plus de vocaux graves, un peu plus Death metal que la moyenne.

M : J'ai constaté que la presse a très bien accueilli l'album, mais une fois sur
scène quelle a été la réaction du public? Les nouveaux morceaux ont il leur
préférence?
Alex : Oui au niveau de l'accueil tout le monde adore le nouvel album, je vois bien que
les gens connaissent encore mieux les chansons en concert. Mais en même temps, on a
fait tellement de shows avec les albums précédents que le public connait notre
répertoire à fond. Ils ont eu 2 ans et demi pour apprivoiser le précédent alors tu vois
vraiment en live que certaines de ces chansons sont encore leurs préférées.
Le morceau avec lequel on ouvre tous les soirs est "Les temps changent", qui ouvre
également notre nouvel album. C'est une chanson en français. C'est quelque chose
qu'on a décidé d'explorer, nous sommes francophones, même si on parle un peu
différemment de vous. Maintenant que nous sommes un petit peu plus établis on peut
se permettre de faire ce qu'on veut, et chanter en français c'était quelque chose
d'important pour moi et pour nous. On l’a fait, et on a vu que dans les pays où il y a
une population francophone les gens semblent apprécier cette idée.
M : Des chansons en français, vous ne l'aviez plus fait depuis votre premier
album et sur celui ci on en retrouve 2. Pourquoi précisément ces 2 morceaux? Les
sujets abordés étaient ils plus proches de vous pour provoquer ce « besoin »?
Alex : Je ne pourrais même pas t'expliquer ca de façon logique. C'est sortit tout seul.
Peu importe la langue que j'utilise, tous les sujets que j'aborde sont des choses qui me
tiennent à cœur. Nous parlons de la vie de tous les jours, nous ne sommes pas un
groupe très politique ou engagé, on a plutôt tendance à relater nos propres expériences.
On essaye de voir le négatif qui nous entoure pour essayer de transformer ça en
quelque chose de plus positif. Tous les sujets abordés ont autant d'importance, quelque
soit la langue.

M : Tant que nous en sommes à aborder votre origine québécoise, nous avons
évidemment quelques gros groupes de chez vous qui viennent par chez nous, mais
comment se développe la scène là bas? Il y a beaucoup de shows?
Alex : A l'époque où nous avons commencé, c'était très difficile. On a tous joué dans
des groupes auparavant, donné des concerts quand on était plus jeunes, on fait tous
partie de la scène metal québécoise depuis le milieu des années 90, on a grandi dans
cette scène là et quand on a commencé à évoluer dans ces autres groupes les seuls dont
on entendait parler c'était Kataklysm et Cryptopsy qui ont percé au niveau
international, mais sorti de ces 2 là, pour tous les autres sortir du Québec, où encore
plus dur, du canada, semblait impossible. Très peu de groupes montréalais étaient
signés. Même des canadiens en fait. Tout c'est mis en place quand des groupes comme
nous, Ion Dissonance ou Beneath The Massacre sont devenus des amis proches, quand
on a tous commencé à décrocher des contrats, ca a motivé notre scène et ca a attiré le
regard des gens et des labels sur ce qui se faisait chez nous. D'ailleurs nous sommes
fiers de là où nous venons, et il suffit de regarder nos t-shirts avec la fleur de lys qui
est quand même un de nos emblèmes pour s’en rendre compte. Nous sommes
définitivement fiers de tous nos amis qui percent doucement dans la même voie que
nous. Ils restent rares mais on en voit de plus en plus. Et puis on a de plus en plus de
concerts, de tournées de groupes américains qui passent chez nous.
M : Vous avez écrit cet album en tournée comme tu nous le disais plus tôt. Avezvous écrit le suivant pendant la tournée qui se termine ce soir?
Alex : Non on n’a pas encore commencé à écrire. On veut commencer par profiter des
premiers mois de la sortie de celui ci. Cette année a été très dure. On a fait des
tournées toute l'année. Avec l'écriture et l'enregistrement on a eu très peu de moments
pour nous alors je crois que l'écriture ce ne sera pas avant l'année prochaine (rires)

M : Une petite question plus personnelle afin d'en savoir plus sur tes influences.
Si tu n'avais pas été dans Despised Icon, dans quel groupe célèbre aurais tu adoré
jouer?
Alex : (rires) Alors là je sens que je vais me faire lapider, mais j'aurais adoré jouer de
la batterie dans Simple Plan. Je sais qu’ils gagnent leur vie, ils se font des tas de
concerts à travers le monde. Et puis je n'ai aucune honte à dire que j'écoute autant de
grind-core que de punk-rock que d'autres choses. Moi tant que tu fais de la bonne
musique je l'apprécie. Mais oui j'avoue que quand je vois un groupe québécois comme
Simple Plan qui a réussi à faire une carrière internationale au niveau commercial, moi
je pense qu'à part Céline Dion il n’y en a pas beaucoup qui l'ont fait.
M : Tu oublies Garou et consorts! (sourire)

M : Comme c'est la dernière date de la tournée, vous avez prévu quelque chose
de spécial pour ce soir?
Alex : Non, juste le chaos, se défouler au maximum. Après ca il ne nous reste que 4
concerts d'ici la fin de l'année pour le lancement de l'album à la maison, alors on veut
mettre les bouchées doubles pour offrir un bon spectacle, pour se défouler et vous en
mettre plein les yeux.
M : Merci beaucoup pour le temps que tu nous as consacré. Un mot de la fin pour
nos lecteurs ?
Alex : L'année prochaine, nous allons revenir 2 fois en Europe alors j'espère vous
revoir tous, et n'hésitez pas à propager la bonne nouvelle. Le metal francophone
existe !

Increased deathcore
With the release of their new (and excellent) record, the
quebeckers of Despised Icon were once again on the road. This
time, the flagship band of the frenchspeaking deathcore scene was
headlining the Never Say Die Tour, and thas was an opportunity
for us to converse with its singer.

Maune (Rock’N’Balls): Let’s start with this, it’s the second time that I have an
opportunity to see you on stage for the Never Say Die Tour, last time it was with
Unearth and Parkway Drive as headliners. I wondered which feeling you got
passing from the mid-evening to the headline of the same tour in only one year of
interval.
Alex Erian: It’s definitely surprising, It’s a bit of pressure but tonight is the last show
so I can say that everything went fine. Every evening the crowd was comparable with
the one of Parkway Drive’s tour then it’s definitely encouraging in our case. But in
general the tour was perfect, even if on our side that was a bit more difficult because
we were on tour in the United States right before this one. A one month tour there,
then we had 2 days of rest before coming to Europe and then begin this one. It makes
us 2 months of tour consecutives so we can’t wait to rest a bit.
M: What was your reaction when you saw with which band you’ll share the tour?
Bands like Horse the Band and Iwretleabearonce can be surprising.
Alex: The bands are differents, there are bands as Oceano which will be be like us and
Horse the Band which less. I think that it’s what makes the charm of a tour, this
diversity. We are more music lovers than metal amateurs then I like to see this kind of
mixture. On our side we listens to as much punk, or rap and metal, thus to bring this
mixed mentality on the tour, I believe that it’s a good thing and it makes it possible to
be appropriate for more people.
M: You are on the road to defend your new album, “Day Of Mourning”, I found
it definitely better than the previous onet. The work on environments is
incredible. Did you approach it’s writing differently to arrive at this result?
Alex: In fact it was the first time that we wrote an album on tour. It makes
nevertheless than 5 years that we’re touring non stop, then the few days, weeks or
months that we spent home, and when I say months it’s not usual (laughs), It’s good to
be able to make something else than to remain concentrated on Despised Icon day
after day. It’s good to decompress, disconnect a little. We started to appreciate all
these small moments there, which makes that we wrote on tour. We were a bit afraid
to change the way we proceed but when we started to write, the ideas hustled
themselves rather quickly, everyone was motivated, everyone was inspired and on the
same tone then all the writing process was really fine. Usually it’s in the studio that
there are some minor problems, or small obstacles, but this time everything happened
fine. Everyone in the band is very proud about our performance, it’s our fourth album,
we are more skilled, we makes music every evening on tour, we improved quite
naturally. To summarize, I think that the new album is an accumulation of any of this
small stuffs On the musical point of view, much of our influences are going back to
old school, whether it is Suffocation or Dying Fetus and I believe that we wanted to
pay homage to all those bands from the Nineties. The young people from today do not
know these bands inevitably, then we swpeak a lot about Death-core but, the more the
public is young and the less it seems to carry out that if you mix a bit of Madball and a
bit of Suffocation on which you add some inspirations from Meshugghah or The
Dillinger Escape Plan, then you obtain this style that they think innovating (laughs). In

our case there are especially guitars a little more metal, a little faster drums, more
solos of guitar, more low pitched vocals, a little more Death metal than the average.

M: I’ve noticed that the press received your album very well, but once on stage,
what is the reaction of the public? Do the new pieces have their preference?
Alex: Yes it was well received, everyone loves the new album, I see that people know
better thane ever the songs in concert. But at the same time, we made so much shows
with the preceding albums that the public knows our repertory deeply. We toured 2
years and half long with the previous one so you really see live that some of these
songs are still their preferred ones. The song which one opens every of our shows "
Les temps changent" , which also opens our new album. It’s a French song. It’s
something we decided to explore, we are French-speaking, even if we speaks a little
differently than you. Now that we are a little bit more established, we can try to make
whant we want and to sing in French was something important for me and the band. It
was done, and we saw that in the countries where there is a French-speaking
population people seem to appreciate this idea.
M: French songs, you didn’t dit it since your first album and on this one we find
2 of them. Why precisely these 2 songs? Were the subjects closer to you to cause
this “need”?
Alex: I could not even explain it logicaly. It went out by itself. Not matter the
language that I use, all the subjects that I approach are things which hold me with
heart. We speak about the life of every day, we are not a very political or engaged
band, we rather report our own experiences. We tries to see the negative and then to
try to transform it into something more positive. All subjects have the same
importance, no matter the language.
M: While we are speaking about your Québec origins, we have obviously some
big bands of your country that comes by us, but how do the scene develops itself
there? Are tehy many shows?
Alex: At the time we started, it was very difficult. we all played in other bands before,
gave concerts when we where younger, we are a part of the Québec metal scene since
the middle of the Nineties, we grew in this scene there and when we started to evolve
in these other bands, the only ones about which we were speaking was Kataklysm and
Cryptopsy which grew up to the international level, but excepted these 2 ones, for all
the others leaving Quebec, or harder, of Canada, seemed impossible. A very few bands
from Montréal were signed. Even Canadian in fact. Everything started when bands
like us, Ion Dissonance or Beneath The Massacre became close friends, when we
began all to obtain contracts, it justified our scene and it attracted the glance of people

and of labels on what was done theres. We are proud from where we come, and it is
enough to take a look at our tee-shirts with the flower of lily which is nevertheless one
of our emblems to realize it. We are definitively proud of all our friends who bore
gently in the same way as us. They remain rare but we see more and more of them.
And then there are more and more concerts, tours of American bands which passes
there.
M: You wrote this album in tour as you said it earlier. Did you wrote the
following during the tour which finishes this evening?
Alex: No, we did not start to write yet. We want to start by benefitting from the first
months of the release of this one. This year was very hard. We made tours all year
long. While writing and recording we had avery few moments for us then I believe
that the writing process will not begin before next year (laughter)

M: A small more personal question to know more abour your influences. If you
woldn’t be in Despised Icon, in which big band would you loved to play?
Alex: (laughs) I feel that I will be made lapidate, but I would loved to play drums in
Simple plan. I know that they earn their life, they are making many concerts
throughout the world. And then I don't have any shame to say that I listen to as many
grind-core that of punk-rock'n'roll that other things. As long as you’re making good
music I’ll appreciate it. Yes I acknowledge that when I see a Québéc’s band as Simple
plan which succeeded in making an international career at the commercial level, I
think that excepted Céline Dion there is not much which made it.
M: You forget Garou! (smile)
Alex: (laughs) Yes unfortunately, Garou…
M: It’s the last date of the tour, you imagined something special for this evening?
Alex: Not, just chaos, destroy ourselves to the maximum. After this one only remains
4 concerts before the end of the year for the launching of the album at home, then we
wants to put the twice the work to offer a good spectacle.
M: Thank you very much for the time that you devoted to us. A word for our
readers?
Alex: Next year, we will come back 2 times in Europe then I hope to se you again
there, and dob’t hesitate to propagate the good news. French-speaking metal exists!
