L’Écrit de Damas est un document à part dans la bibliothèque de
Qumrân découverte entre 1947 et 1967 sur les bords de la mer
Morte. Une partie du document est connue dès la fin du XIXe siècle
grâce à la découverte de deux manuscrits dans la synagogue du
Vieux-Caire en Égypte. L’un de seize pages date du Xe siècle de
notre ère, l’autre de deux pages est une copie du XIIe siècle. Dix
manuscrits de Qumrân, copiés au tournant de l’ère chrétienne,
comblent en partie les lacunes des manuscrits découverts au Caire.
Malgré les dix siècles de différence entre les manuscrits palestiniens
et les parchemins égyptiens, une des copies médiévales est très fidèle
aux manuscrits de Qumrân. C’est pourquoi on propose un texte
reconstruit à partir des différents manuscrits. Ainsi, les manuscrits
palestiniens de l’Écrit de Damas permettent de restituer des parties
du texte perdues dans les copies cairotes. Le Prologue, la première
série de lois, la dernière partie du code pénal et la conclusion avaient
disparu des manuscrits abîmés de la synagogue du Caire mais ils ont
été retrouvés dans les manuscrits de Qumrân.

This commentary attempts to understand and explain the book of
Joshua on its own value and not as part of a larger literary creation
as those theories are largely disputed. It includes the insights of
modern scholarship, but also does not turn a blind eye on earlier
interpretations of the book. Joshua is arguably the most important
biblical book when it comes to questions of Historical Geography
of ancient Israel. Here this aspect is taken into account more than
in some other modern commentaries; this can also be related to the
fact that the author is a biblical scholar who lives in Israel having
worked in the fields of Archeology and Historical Geography.

Was the Jewish Torah codified from its various sources at the behest
of the Persian imperial government? This is the question the present
book explores by engaging in the much acclaimed theory of Imperial
Authorization proposed by Peter Frei. It is a politico-historical analysis of the bilateral relationship between the Achaemenid imperial
government and the province of Judah in order to assess the historical plausibility of Ezra’s mission recorded in the Hebrew Bible.
This study turns to legislative documents from Achaemenid-era
Egypt and Asia Minor in order to appraise Frei’s theory, while
taking a diachronic and synchronic approach to the socio-political
history of Judah under the Persian rule. It examines the administrative value of the Jerusalem Temple and the geopolitical significance
of Judah from the standpoint of the imperial government. The
literary-critical evaluation of the biblical record along with the
insight garnered from the historical circumstances reveals how imperial politics intervened in the emergence of Torah.

The present work is an attempt to better understand Psalm 109 in
relation to its curse content and the ambiguity surrounding the
speaker. The psalm appears somewhat out of the ordinary – the curse
elements seem to be out of proportion and give the impression of
being imported or inserted. As such, it presents exegetes with a
variety of challenges. At the same time, the multiplicity of interpretations Psalm 109 has acquired in the history of exegesis reveals a great
deal about the way we read and about the conscious and unconscious
elements that colour and direct our reading, especially the mental
constructs we acquire through our different cultures, languages,
ideological stances or social locations, all of which give rise to different understandings of a text, while defining the context of each
understanding or interpretation. By means of an interdisciplinary
approach that focuses on the contextual and cross-cultural, the work
reveals Psalm 109 to be the product of a typically human theistic
behaviour that arises when one is confronted with a threat to one’s
life and well-being. The work brings to the fore the cultural constructs woven into the text by its author, upon which basis the psalm
is to be understood both within its culture and across cultures.

This volume supplements the volume with the same main title
which contains New Testament Essays from 1992-2002 and
appeared in 2003. It continues the attempt (described in the preceding volume) to collect Professor Lambrecht’s shorter writings into
volumes that would be more accessible. The present volume brings
together 35 studies, some rather brief, others more expanded. The
first 34 are “bookended” by the cover illustration and the final article, which reflects on how Dei Verbum has functioned through forty
years in attempting to understand what one reads in Scripture. As
elsewhere in previous studies, Professor Lambrecht examines the
relation between Q and Mark; he more than once reacts against a
too easy reference to intertextuality which is methodologically not
justified. He always carefully analyzes the line of thought (and the
literal sense) in a number of passages, asking the question “How
does the New Testament author reason and argue?”. The majority
of the articles in this volume have been published in journals or
Festschrifts. Most of the studies are strictly scientific; a few however
have been written as conferences or essays for a non-specialized
Christian public. As the reader will observe, quite often a brief article is a reply to a recent publication. It is hoped that this collection
of dispersed published studies and unpublished material will be
appreciated by colleagues and students alike.

While wisdom was highly valued in the Hellenistic world, there is
only one place in the New Testament that discusses the gospel in
terms of wisdom: 1 Corinthians 1-4. Yet, instead of entering into a
conciliating dialogue on wisdom, Paul confronts his readers with a
conflict over wisdom. This study argues that the roots for this conflict are found in Scripture, especially in the prophetic books of
Isaiah and Jeremiah, as the quotations indicate. Significant literary
and theological relationships are brought to light by means of an
intertextual approach.

This volume contains the proceedings of the tenth meeting of the
international “Origeniana” conference which is convened every four
years. The overall theme of the “Origeniana Decima” is “Origen as
writer”. The volume is divided into eight parts which are preceded
by two introductory papers that introduce the reader into some of
the secrets of Origen’s writing techniques. The first part consists of
two essays that deal with two intellectual traditions that had a major
influence on Origen, Neo-Platonism and the rabbinic exegetical tradition. Part Two deals with the scope and complexity of Origen’s
oeuvre and Part Three with aspects of hermeneutics. Part Four
focuses on the Apologies, with special interest in the Contra Celsum,
and Part Five on the commentaries and the homilies. The sixth part
includes articles on various aspects of Origen’s language. Part Seven
deals with the philosophical sources as these are used in exegetical
and other works. Part Eight, on the disciples and followers of
Origen, is the longest one with nineteen essays. Overall, this is once
more an excellent specimen of the famous Origeniana conferences
which for now almost forty years bring together specialists from all
over the world. This volume, like previous ones in the series, will
contribute significantly to our knowledge of Origen’s achievements
and of his influence.

In the fifteenth century, a fearless Abba Estifanos and his followers
openly criticized the monastic leaders of the Ethiopian Orthodox
Church for what the monks saw as a gross disregard of monastic
rules in the monastic leaders’ relationship with political leaders.
These monks of the Monastery of Gundagunde, in the province of
Tegray, spoke out against the practice of having the monarch
appoint abbots to head the large monasteries. Further, they dismissed as unchristian all religious practices that were not prescribed
in, or proscribed by, the Eighty-One Canonical Scriptures of the
Church. Most of all, they refused to bow to anything or anybody
other than the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, including the
king. Such defiance in a theocratic polity, in which the monarch was
the head of the Church and State, was an extremely dangerous posture. Consequently, Abba Estifanos and his followers suffered
unspeakable martyrdom.
Vol. 635 tells the amazing story of these monks as they themselves
recorded it in Ge’ez, the liturgical language of the Church. Vol. 636
is its English version. It is woth noting that although the narrative
is hagiographical, the pertinent facts contained in the text are independently verifiable.

Isacco di Ninive fino ad ora sconosciuta. Le fonti antiche informano
circa l’esistenza di più collezioni di suoi discorsi, ma sino a qualche
decennio fa solo la Prima collezione era nota. Negli anni ottanta del
secolo scorso è stata ritrovata la Seconda collezione, in seguito parzialmente edita, ed ora con quest’opera di fornisce la Terza collezione.
Il manoscritto di Teheran, che resta unico per l’insieme dei discorsi,
ha consentito l’individuazione di altri testimoni parziali, in siriaco e
in arabo, che sono stati così collazionati con il manoscritto principale. Qui si fornisce dunque l’edizione critica dell’insieme, che tiene
conto di tutti i testimoni siriaci e, per alcuni passi, anche della versione araba. Il secondo volume contiene invece la traduzione dei
testi, corredata di un apparato di note volto in primo luogo a mettere in luce i paralleli lessicali e concettuali con le altre due collezioni

Forty-three Syriac and Garshuni manuscripts owned by the Iraqi
Department of Antiquities and Heritage are here catalogued and
described in great detail. The manuscripts cover major literary genres
known to Syriac literature, each of which is discussed in a lengthy
introduction with an up-to-date bibliography. To illustrate the contents and styles of the manuscripts, short texts extracted from most of
them are given in Syriac and Garshuni with translations in English.
Some manuscripts are liturgical and were once the property of
Melkite, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, and Assyrian churches.
Other manuscripts are spiritual and theological compendiums, biblical
lectionaries and psalms, Melkite pastoral letters dealing with Roman
Catholic devotional practices, charms and popular medicine, and sogyata and durikyata poems. A unique manuscript consists of a Kurdish
(Kurmanji) grammar in Syriac authored by a 19th century Chaldean
monk living in the Monastery of Rabban Hormizd in northern Iraq.
The codices are dated between the 16th and the 19th centuries,
though there is one dated to the 14th century, and they were produced in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and central and eastern Anatolia.

The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin has a world-famous collection
of oriental manuscripts assembled by the late Sir Alfred Chester
Beatty during the last century. A catalogue of the Armenian manuscripts was prepared by the eminent historian of Armenian art,
Sirarpie Der Nersessian, in the 1950’s. The present catalogue presents some manuscripts which Dr. Der Nersessian did not catalogue
and those which entered the collection after her catalogue was completed. It was prepared by Michael Stone, Professor of Armenian
Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Nira Stone,
lecturer in Armenian Art at the same university. It deals in considerable detail with each manuscript, its codicology, its structure and its
text (M.E. Stone) and a study of its illuminations (Nira Stone). The
book contains onomastic and iconographical indexes. It completes
the publication of the Armenian manuscripts of the Chester Beatty
Library and will eventually be followed by a further volume dedicated to other Armenian holdings, notably old printed books and

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is a much-debated apocryphal work, but it is usually considered to be a Christian work of the
second century CE, including many, ancient Jewish traditions. It is
of considerable significance for the history of Judaism and Christianity. The Armenian version, associated with the Armenian Bible
translation, has long been considered to be a very faithful rendering
of an early Greek text. The present work is a critical editio minor of
this version, based on 11 selected manuscripts of a total of over 70.

This book is a systematic presentation of the linguistic features in
all the published Ancient Armenian texts, mainly belonging to the
so-called Hellenizing School of translations (late fifth - early eighth
century), which are explained by Greek influence. These features
include various types of lexical, morphological and syntactical
Grecisms. Many of them are also characteristic of ‘pre-Hellenizing’
translations; a few examples of some of them are found in the early
classical translations from Greek. In all cases the corresponding
passages of the Greek originals (if extant) are cited. Most of the sections concluded with examples of the classical translation practice of
the corresponding linguistic features without any Greek influence.
In an appendix, various features of Latinizing Armenian (seventeenth century) are traced back to Hellenizing Armenian.

The place held by the Heart Sutra in Mahayana Buddhism parallels
in some important ways that of the Gospel of John in Christianity.
Each is foundational and central to its tradition. Each demands the
practitioner’s transformation through prayer and meditation. And,
although the approach to deep and abiding human experience that
is found in the Heart Sutra is quite different from that expressed in
John’s gospel, there is a resonance between the Sutra’s emptying of
every vestige of self-identity and John’s call for a radical reconfiguration of consciousness. In this book, a Christian theologian reads the
Heart Sutra, allowing its teaching on emptiness of self to percolate
through his understanding of the central teachings of the Christian
tradition – incarnation and trinity – as these are disclosed in the
Gospel of John.

sound of worship among Surinamese Lutherans and Ghanaian
Methodists in Amsterdam. Departing from the idea that the sonic
spectrum of liturgy comprises more than ‘church music’ alone, she

Funk Deckard deal with Muslim equivalents to reconciliation. The
various studies brought together represent a great diversity of perspectives on reconciliation. While reconciliation is primarily a Christian concept coming from the Pauline tradition, it is important to
see that similar ideas are present in both Judaism and Islam. Though
differences remain, the contributions do demonstrate that not only
is an Abrahamic trialogue on this subject possible, but that it is
beneficial for all involved and that it has undoubted potential for
further development.

How to judge religions other than one’s own when facing a plurality
of religions? The author makes a philosophical inquiry in two interconnected fields, linguistic undecidability and the necessity of
making judgements. The central claim is that no stable centre for
meaning can be established for linguistic entities. Even in cases
where a stable centre of meaning would seem to be required, the
author argues that linguistic entities in fact have to be mobile, in
order to allow for newness in interpretation and understanding.
Without such mobility, language would cease to function as language. A related concern is: Does truth entail justice? The author
argues that it is not enough to possess true knowledge when making
normative judgements. Ultimately, it is argued, judgements are
made by persons, not impersonal principles. In closing, the focus of
the inquiry is brought back to the concrete question of religious
diversity. While this study mainly offers a fresh philosophical
approach to issues of religious diversity, its line of argument relates
to a number of topics well beyond its primary scope.

Les notions d’identité et de différence recoupent celles de l’un et du
multiple, du même et de l’autre, de l’être et du devenir. La pensée
de Nicolas de Cues les a analysées avec une profondeur inégalée dans
une œuvre qui demeure méconnue et qui est, cependant, d’une
actualité étonnante. Dans la Docte ignorance, le Cusain enseigne que
Dieu est unité, égalité de l’unité avec l’unité et connexion de l’unité
et de l’égalité. Que serait, en effet, une unité différente de l’unité,
une unité qui ne serait plus une? Nicolas de Cues répond qu’il ne
peut y avoir d’égalité sans unité. Dans son opuscule De aequalitate,
il développera la thèse qu’il n’y a pas d’unité parfaite sans égalité.
Dès lors, quelle place donner à la différence, s’il ne peut y avoir une
autre unité que l’unité? Si l’unité se donne à soi dans une répétition
de soi, comment cette répétition peut-elle se distinguer de la différenciation? Telle est la problématique abordée dans les Actes du
colloque qui s’est tenu à Rennes sous la direction de Hervé Pasqua
publiés dans notre collection.

Cet ouvrage se propose d’examiner chez Suárez (1548-1617), comment la théorie du droit et de la loi prolonge la pensée de l’étant
élaborée par la métaphysique en une compréhension ontologique du
politique. Il s’agit précisément de mener à son terme, dans un système unifié du savoir, la détermination de l’étant en procédant à son
extension à la question de l’être de l’homme et de l’être-en-commun
propre à la société politique.
Au commencement du XVIIe siècle, une autre direction pour l’accomplissement du projet ontologique non identifiable à celle d’une
science mathématique de la nature se profile et préfigure une récurrence persistante des origines de la philosophie. Ainsi, on trouve
dans le système suarézien la retranscription originale et réactualisée
d’une ligne de force traversant la pensée antique: l’ontopolitique. Il
devient alors nécessaire afin d’expliciter et de justifier cette orientation, de déterminer à la fois le fondement et la spécificité de la
relation instaurée par Suárez entre l’ontologie, la théologie, l’anthropologie et le politique; ces domaines demeurent indissociables d’une
crise et d’un renouveau de la philosophie première s’énonçant
comme accomplissement éthique de la raison métaphysique.

Sein und Zeit entendait répéter la «question de l’être», mais «commençait» par une analytique de la «quotidienneté». Or, si notre
époque est peu encline à assumer le projet d’une Fundamentalontologie, du moins s’est-elle emparée du «quotidien» jusqu’à l’ériger en
authentique paradigme. Le présent travail, prenant acte de ce paradigme en tâchant d’en circonscrire conceptuellement l’émergence
— quelle est sa fonction dans la pensée du XXe siècle, et à quel type
de nécessité répond-il ? — se propose de montrer que le problème de
la «quotidienneté», en projetant la philosophie dans l’espace d’une
différence où elle ne s’institue que dans le mouvement par lequel elle
se saisit de ce qu’elle n’est pas, se situe au cœur de la démarche phénoménologique, et permet par là même d’en interroger les fondements.
Aussi entreprenons-nous d’abord de faire valoir, par une lecture
interne de certains moments clés de son histoire, et en insistant
particulièrement sur l’équivocité caractérisant à cet égard la Fundamentalontologie heideggérienne, qu’un tel «problème» dévoile dans
le projet phénoménologique certaines failles architectoniques dans
lesquelles une pensée de la publicité comme celle de Wittgenstein
permet de s’engouffrer pour autant qu’elle en conteste le geste
d’auto-fondation. Puis, à la lumière de ce qu’une telle approche
s’avère à son tour susceptible de nous révéler quant au sens de notre
«quotidienneté», nous tentons, sur un mode cette fois «positif» —
et en écho à la pensée du «second» Heidegger et à sa redétermination rarement soulignée du thème de l’Alltäglichkeit — de cerner la
possibilité d’une «répétition de la question de l’être» libérée de ses
présupposés ontologico-phénoménologiques initiaux.

This practice-based philosophical study presents the view that professional healthcare is not just one of the many paid professions. On
the contrary, healthcare should be redefined as a modest but meaningful variant of enacted love for one’s fellow human beings, practiced in an institutional context. There is a reciprocal side to it, as

residents, or clients. Those groups have feelings of gratitude, respect

sphere.
Professional Loving Care is the condensed and updated version of
Menslievende zorg, originally written within the context of the Low
Countries, but dealing with issues that are relevant to western
healthcare systems in general. The Dutch edition was published in
2005 and by 2011 it was in its sixth reprint. Many professionals and
patients stated that the book helped rethinking both the practice and
the basis of professional healthcare in late modern society.

Sprachkontakte zwischen Ägyptern und Sprechergruppen des nordostafrikanischen
Raumes haben vom ausgehenden vierten Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis in die Mitte des
ersten nachchristlichen Jahrtausends zur Entlehnung eines nicht unerheblichen
afrikanischstämmigen Wortschatzes in die schriftliche Überlieferung des ÄgyptischKoptischen geführt. Die Relevanz, die diese Transferenzbefunde insbesondere für
die (Sprach-)geschichte des nordostafrikanischen Raumes besitzen, ist in ihrem
besonderen sprachhistorischen Zeugniswert sowohl für die afrikanischen Quellsprachen, als auch das Ägyptisch-Koptische zu sehen. Während die Transferenzbefunde
ägyptischer Quellen für die unverschrifteten afrikanischen Einzelsprachen die einzigen greifbaren Reflexe früher Sprachzustände darstellen, bieten sie für das Ägyptische die Möglichkeit zur Überprüfung besonders der lautlichen Verhältnisse seiner frühesten verschrifteten Sprachstufe, dem älteren Ägyptisch. Ziel der Arbeit ist
es, ausgehend von den ägyptischen Quellen, vor allem die sprachliche Evidenz der
Transferenzbefunde herauszuarbeiten und diese auch in den historischen und
sprachhistorischen Kontext einzuordnen. Im ersten Abschnitt der Arbeit erfolgt
zunächst ein diachroner Querschnitt zur ägyptisch-afrikanischen lexikalischen
Interferenz vom dritten Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis in das erste Jahrtausend n. Chr.
Abschnitt II bietet synchrone Analysen zu den im älteren Ägyptisch überlieferten
afrikanischstämmigen Entlehnungen, dem kontextuellen und kotextuellen Zeugniswert der Trägerüberlieferungen und der sprachlichen Evidenz der Transferenzbefunde. Im Rahmen eines Lemmakataloges werden daraufhin 428 Entlehnungen
dokumentiert und besprochen. Durch die in dieser Arbeit vorgenommenen einzelsprachlichen Anschlüsse vor allem nubischer Topo-, Ethno- und Anthroponyme
an das nordkuschitische Beja, das Ost- und Zentralkuschitische, das Libysch-Berberische und das Meroitische, erhalten die historischen Sprachkontakte zwischen
Ägypten und seinen afrikanischen Nachbarn eine konkretere Gestalt.

Aus den Anfängen der hellenistischen Epoche in Ägypten gibt es nur
wenige zeitgenössische Zeugnisse. Eines davon ist die Satrapenstele.
Diese hieroglyphische Stele dokumentiert eine Landschenkung des
Satrapen Ptolemaios an den Tempel von Buto und nennt weitere
historische Ereignisse wie die Verlegung der Residenz nach Alexandria. Sie ist seit langem bekannt und wurde mehrfach übersetzt.
Einen umfassenden sprachlichen und historischen Kommentar gab
es bisher aber noch nicht. Die Stele bildet den Schwerpunkt der
vorliegenden Untersuchung zum Verhältnis zwischen makedonischen Herrschern und indigenen Priesterschaften in der frühen Ptolemäerzeit. Der Denkstein steht im Spannungsfeld zwischen den
ägyptischen Verfassern und dem makedonischen Protagonisten,
weshalb vor allem die Herrscherpräsentation eine besondere Rolle
spielt. Zur Prüfung der gewonnenen Ergebnisse wurden zwei weitere
hieroglyphische Stelen herangezogen. Die Pithomstele und die
Mendesstele berichten über Taten und Kultunterstützung durch
Ptolemaios II. So ist die Betrachtung der Entwicklung über zwei
Herrschergenerationen hinweg möglich. Zielgruppe der Studie sind
Althistoriker und Ägyptologen gleichermaßen.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the lunar Macedonian
calendar in two decades. The mechanics of the calendar are examined
in detail, and a new approach for reconstructing the sequence of
intercalary months and years is proposed which, for the first time,
permits a consistent interpretation of the papyrological data of the
middle Ptolemaic period. It is shown that in c. 265 BC Ptolemy II
deliberately set in motion a process to realign the calendar over an
extended period, which ended early in the reign of Ptolemy IV. The
results have implications for the origins of the financial year, the date
of the Ptolemaieia, and the history of the Canopic reform of the
Egyptian calendar, among other topics. Appendices consider the
nature of Macedonian intercalation and the New Year outside Egypt.

Der vorliegende Band ist eine Arbeit zu musikalischen Aspekten der
Koptischen Liturgie, die Musik der christlichen Gemeinschaft Ägyptens.
Die Musik einer der ältesten christlichen Kulturen wird in der koptologischen sowie musikologischen Literatur nur wenig erwähnt und oft
sogar ganz weggelassen. Aus den reichhaltigen Melodien der koptischen
liturgischen Musik wurden die Melodien der Psalmodia gewählt zu Analysen und musikalischen Transkriptionen. Die verschiedenen kirchlichen Festtage kennzeichnen sich durch verschiedene Melodien auf
denselben Texten. Die Arbeit ist dreiteilig und besteht im ersten Teil

Einführung in das nächtlichen Ritual Psalmodia mit ihren verschiedenen
Aufführungen, aus Gesprächen mit Teilnehmern an dem Ritual
Psalmodia, einer Literaturübersicht und Notationsbeispielen zeitgenössischer Ausführenden. Der zweite Teil enthält die Analysen der verschiedenen Festtagsmelodien, die in der Psalmodia zur Verwendung kommen. Verschiedene Interpretationen werden miteinander verglichen.
Auffallend an den Analysen sind die musikalischen Formeln aus denen
die verschiedenen Melodien wie mit farbigen Mosaiksteinen zusammengestellt sind und die Positionen an denen sie in den Melodien gefunden
wurden. Im dritten Teil befinden sich die Transkriptionen der analysierten Melodien in westlicher Musiknotation. Auf einer dazu gefügten
CD ist eine Auswahl der Gesänge zu hören, wobei historische Aufnahmen abgewechselt werden mit Aufnahmen während der Zeremonien
oder mit Tonbändern, die Kantoren für ihre Studenten zu Studienzwecken aufgenommen haben.

The conference Intercultural Contacts in the Ancient Mediterranean
(ICAM) was organised in 2008 by the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo. While Mediterranean contacts in archaeology are a
popular topic in Europe, it was the first time this theme was

Mit dem Beginn der assyrischen Expansion im 8. Jh. v. u. Z. endete
schrittweise die politische Unabhängigkeit der Levante. Die Frage,
wie die Expansion erfolgte und wie die Assyrer dieses Territorium
organisiert und verwaltet haben, steht im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit.
Wichtige Aspekte dieser Thematik sind u. a., welche Grenzen die
unabhängigen oder annektierten politischen Einheiten hatten, was
die Assyrer von den vorhandenen Strukturen übernahmen und was
sie veränderten, welche konkrete Maßnahmen einer Annexion folgten. Anhand der Analyse der assyrischen Herrschaftspraxis wird eine

This cahier deals with the criticism of three sources: Dinawari’s alAkhbar al-Tiwal, the so-called Sirat Anusharwan, and Firdawsi’s
Shahnama. The need to examine these sources arises from a re-evaluation of Nöldeke’s Khuday-Nama hypothesis; a case is built for the
independence and utility of those three sources; and four test cases
follow, in which the sources are put to work on issues of central
importance in the history of sixth-century Iran. The conclusion is a
narrative integrating the findings of the test cases into the broad
picture of Sasanian history.

In May 2009 the Leuven Institute of Early Christian and Byzantine
Studies organized an international congress, with the title: Encyclopedic Trends in Byzantium? Some 40 scholars discussed the concept
of Byzantine “encyclopedism”, a notion coined definitively in 1971
by the French scholar Paul Lemerle as a characterization of Byzantine
culture for the period 800-1000: the emphasis was not on creativity,
but on collecting and copying; until very recent times the term
“encyclopedism” has been repeated rather rashly in all kind of publications. Many problems have been dealt with during our congress:
e.g. what are the definition and characteristics of Byzantine “encyclopedism”? Does the Byzantine understanding of this notion differ
from ours? Has this really been the main feature of the period studied
by Lemerle? Do these compilations mirror the broader cultural
atmosphere in Byzantium? Which are the strategies (theological, literary, political) playing a part in the Byzantine art of compiling? The
proceedings, containing more than 20 articles, pave the way for a
prudent assessment of the so-called Byzantine “encyclopedism”.

La Mission archéologique de l’Université de Liège en Syrie a effectué
entre 1991 et 1998 huit campagnes de fouille à Tell Amarna en
Syrie. Le présent rapport contient l’étude d’une église byzantine et
de ses mosaïques mises au jour en 1998, à environ 700 m au sud du
tell principal. Au moment de son dégagement, cette trouvaille était
la première du genre dans la région. L’étude et la publication de cet
ensemble, en même temps que la restauration partielle des mosaïques,
ont donné lieu à une collaboration internationale. La publication
contient aussi des articles qui placent cette église et ses mosaïques
dans son contexte géographique et historique.

The Handy Tables of Ptolemy have exercised, in the history of ancient
astronomy, an influence at least equal to that of the Mathematical Syntaxis (Almagest). This work includes a short manual explaining how to
use these tables, as well as the tables themselves. If the manual has
already been the subject of a critical edition by Heiberg in the Opera
astronomica minora of Ptolemy (1907), the tables themselves are only
available in the old and rather unreliable edition of the Abbé Nicolas
Halma (1822-1825). The present work constitutes the first volume of
a critical edition of the astronomical tables. Volume 1a includes first of
all a long introduction explaining the history of these tables and the
principles followed in the edition. This includes the tables of right and
oblique ascension (A1-A2), as well as the tables of ascensions for the
climate of Byzantium (B1). The edition is followed by a critical apparatus, which includes also several papyri and a fragment of a palimpsest
from Vat.syr. 623. Volume 1b is devoted to the transcription of the
tables and a commentary. The transcription is accompanied by an apparatus which provides where necessary the correctly calculated entry. The
commentary provides a study of the chronological background of the
Era of Philip, a mathematical commentary on the tables of ascension
(including the equation of time), and in a series appendices a review of
Syriac and Arabic texts bearing on the Handy Tables.

Si la faute a fait l’objet d’études en lien avec la tragédie, le thème de
l’infraction (recouvrant, plus largement, erreur et faute) reste peu
étudié dans l’œuvre de Thucydide. Comment l’historien, qui affirme
présenter les faits sans filtre, aborde-t-il cette question à une époque
où les notions de responsabilité et de culpabilité font l’objet d’une
réévaluation? Cette étude démontre la place que prend l’erreur dans
la perspective didactique de l’œuvre. L’étude lexicale des termes
exprimant l’infraction (hamartanein et adikein) établit ainsi leurs
nuances d’emploi, en particulier dans les relations entre cités. Les
jeux, flottements ou distorsions imposés à cette distinction dans les

ces manipulations étant récurrentes, la forme elle-même du discours,

ruler worship. A principal emphasis is placed on the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. The present volume points to some
possible forerunners to Hellenistic royal cult and emperor worship, or at
least to the concept of the divine king, to supplement the well-studied roots
of ruler worship in the cultic life of the Greek polis and in pharaonic Egypt.
More than Men… aspires to contribute to the debate relative to divine kingship, royal cult and emperor worship by opening new perspectives or reopening old ones. The focus is in eliciting some audacious and innovative
approaches to such a complex phenomenon. All questions are not raised and
certainly most of them are not answered here. In abandoning the sterile
opposition between “political” and “religious,” the volume’s perspective
transcends established notions conditioned by the Judeo-Christian model of
western societies and scholarship, to consider the problem under different
perspectives: there is no need to oppose “Greek” vs. “oriental,” “rational” vs.
“emotional” to understand the birth of the phenomenon. The diversity of
approaches draws attention to the variety of sources that provide evidence
relating to ruler worship, or that can enhance our understanding of the
broader phenomenon of the divinization of powerful men. These include
myth and historical accounts preserved by ancient authors; dedicatory
inscriptions; clay tablets; papyri; architectural decoration and other
archaeological remains; statuary, cameos, gems and various minor arts; seal
impressions; and coins.

This book focuses on Etruscan private and public ritual behaviour in
the last millennium BC. It is based on archaeological, epigraphical and
historical sources. Topics are context, form, origins, agency, dynamics
(homeostasis or change), meaning, function and the survival of rites in
the Roman imperial and later periods. After an introduction to recent
theories and definitions, first private rituals are traced, rites de passage
like marriage, birth, perinatal burial, transition to adulthood, immersion, healing, adoption, divination and consecration. Mortuary rituals
are dealt with separately in view of their private and public dimensions. Pre-burial, burial, and post-burial rites, are primarily analysed
by paying attention to sets of grave-goods, and to artefacts and bones
found in or near a tomb, as written sources are almost absent. Grave
sets reflect, from c. 800 until c. 40 BC, the core activity first of the
elite and later of the rich middle class, namely eating and wine drinking. Not only the deceased were supposed to continue this ritual in
the netherworld, eating and drinking also took place in pre- and postburial phases of funerals. This practice was important for reasons of
self-repesentation, consolidation of power, and social reproduction.
Finally, fragments of or quotations from sacred books, especially lost
libri rituales, transmitted by Greek and Roman authors, are confronted with the evidence of recent archaeological excavations, especially in newly founded cities. Though ancient authors were biased, it
will appear that their information, especially on cosmological orientation, orthogonality, mundus, sulcus primigenius, and pomerium, often
has a core of truth. Most Etruscan rituals disappeared in the fourth
century AD. A few, however, survived until the present day, be it in
a changed way, and in different contexts.

The medieval fascination with the mysterious language of Dionysius
the Areopagite is nowhere more evident than in the thirteenth-century textbook edition of his treatise on liturgical rites. Dionysius
employed unfamiliar Greek to describe people, actions, and texts
that would have been perfectly familiar to his readers. The Latin
translation used in the thirteenth-century textbook strives to preserve this unfamiliarity, but commentaries are introduced between
the lines and paragraphs, disrupting its ability to bewilder and surprise. These commentaries make the Dionysian text less mysterious,
while also slightly altering its meaning. In the hands of the commentators, Dionysius becomes less interested in the aesthetic mystery of the liturgy, and more interested in credal orthodoxy. To read
text and commentary together is to confront seven hundred years of
competing voices speaking on the nature and purpose of the Christian church.

Medieval writers frequently refer to the composition of their own
verse and prose works. These authorial interventions are often cryptic and partial, bringing them together, like pieces in a puzzle,
reveals a coherent picture of their art of poetry and prose. However,
beyond the interest of this knowledge in its own right, it is also
necessary to find out how it can be used to interpret, evaluate, and
appreciate the works that exemplify it. As the French art of invention emerged from the medieval Latin tradition in rhetoric and poetics, vernacular authors, from Chrétien de Troyes to Christine de
Pizan, adapted it to the composition of their own narratives, lyric
poems, and treatises. This book brings together a number of essays
that show how medieval writers in the translatio studii invented,
with subtlety and imagination, diverse, original, and even compelling works that conform to their literary art. Focusing on both well
known and less well known authors and works, the essays are
grouped under the following topics: the art of invention, the Roman
de Troie, Arthurian verse romances and the matière de Bretagne,
prose romance on the knights of the Round Table and on the Seven

This volume sheds new light on the origins of early serial music at
the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s. Current music
historical accounts of the development of serial music need to be
revised in two ways. It is important to correct both the Eurocentric
approach and the exclusive attention to the already well-documented
‘heroes’ of serial music (Boulez, Stockhausen, Nono, Pousseur). The
significance of Milton Babbitt is put into perspective, as are the idiosyncratic contributions by Herman Van San, Karel Goeyvaerts,
Michel Fano, Jean Barraqué or Bruno Maderna. The contributions
to this collected volume deal with the historical position of these
composers by analyzing their composition techniques and aesthetical

Le sunwadia est une langue océanienne à tradition orale du centrenord du Vanuatu, parlée dans l’île de Maewo par environ 500 locuteurs. On y reconnaît, à des stades plus ou moins poussés, les traits
caractéristiques de la famille austronésienne: l’existence d’un article
personnel, une tendance à l’omniprédicativité, la modification de la
structure argumentale du verbe par quelques morphèmes hérités du
système à applicatif des langues situées plus haut dans la généalogie
de la famille. Elle présente également le système de marques personnelles, très reconnaissable, des langues austronésiennes.
La langue est relativement conservatrice sur le plan phonologique,
mais sa morphologie apparaît assez érodée; il n’existe ni conjugaison verbale, ni déclinaison casuelle, ni marquage morphologique du
nombre sur les noms.
Cet ouvrage étudie les questions de phonétique, phonologie, morphologie, avant de s’intéresser plus spécifiquement à la morpho-syntaxe du sunwadia. Il s’attache à présenter le fonctionnement de la
langue dans le plus grand nombre de domaines, tout en mettant
l’accent sur les problématiques majeures que sont les questions de
référence, la prédication (et en particulier, l’omniprédicativité, les
constructions à verbes sériels, le marquage aspecto-modal), le repérage
spatio-temporel et cognitif, etc. On trouvera en fin d’ouvrage un extrait de corpus oral glosé.

De luchtmachtbasis in Zellik-Relegem is één van de eerste militaire
domeinen in ons land die gesaneerd en nagenoeg volledig herbestemd is. Het militaire verleden lijkt er vandaag wel heel ver weg. Al
klopt dat niet helemaal: de oude ballonloods uit 1929, beschermd
maar ernstig beschadigd, is nog getuige van de tot de verbeelding
sprekende beginperiode: na de Grote Oorlog gaat de Belgische legerleiding op zoek naar grote terreinen voor de installatie van ballon- en
vliegtuigbases. Bij de dorpen Zellik en Relegem verrijst kort daarop
een militaire basis met ballonloods. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog
vervult de site een cruciale rol als materieel- en bevoorradingsdepot
voor de gehele Belgische luchtmacht. Het einde van de Koude Oorlog leidt tot drastische besparingen en afslankingen in de militaire
sector, en in 1995 sneuvelt ook de luchtmachtbasis van Zellik-Relegem. Het terrein wordt gedemilitariseerd en in 1995 koopt de provincie Vlaams-Brabant het domein als locatie voor haar vormingscentrum (Provinciaal Instituut voor Vorming en Opleiding, beter
bekend als het PIVO). Het domein groeide uit tot een ‘Groene
Campus’, waar openbaar nut gekoppeld wordt aan comfortabel en
kwalitatief wonen in een natuurvriendelijke omgeving.

De Wijnpers bestaat 100 jaar. Deze school werd in 1911 opgericht
als ‘Provinciale Groente- en Moesteeltschool van Leuven’. Ze kreeg
onderdak in het pittoreske oude wijnpersgebouw van de SintGertrudisabdij. De tuinbouwschool moest een tegengewicht bieden
voor het elitaire en theoretische tuinbouwonderwijs dat aan de
Rijksscholen gegeven werd. De school werd in Leuven gesticht vanwege het economisch belang van de groenteteelt in de omgeving van
de stad. De stichters wilden vakmannen opleiden om zo de kwaliteit
en kwantiteit van de Brabantse groenteteelt omhoog te stuwen. De
school kende een zeer bescheiden start. In 1913, het eerste jaar dat
er lesgegeven werd, waren er slechts 21 leerlingen. Vandaag zijn dat
er bijna 500. Ondertussen biedt de school behalve tuinbouw ook
kunstonderwijs en opleidingen biotechnieken en centrale verwarming/sanitair aan. Het schooldomein is doorheen de jaren sterk
uitgebreid en van moderne gebouwen voorzien. In het oude wijnpersgebouw wordt al lang geen les meer gegeven. Deze publicatie
overloopt in zes delen chronologisch de rijke geschiedenis van de
school en is gebaseerd op uitvoerig archiefonderzoek en mondelinge
getuigenissen.
