What drives us to have to have that cup of coffee every day before we leave for work?
Coffee continues to be popular because, it wakes us up.
And why is it popular in the morning? Partly that’s because in the morning, it’s been a long time since
you’ve had that last cup of coffee.
And you’re in withdrawal, your brain is kind of craving coffee at that point. So the best solution to
withdrawal symptoms is to apply the drug that causes them in the first place.
And so, that first cup of coffee feels really good because you’re offsetting the withdrawal symptoms that
are there because you haven’t had your coffee for 24 hours.
So coffee isn’t a true stimulant in the true essence of the word?
Technically, caffeine is not a direct stimulant like amphetamines. It’s an indirect stimulant.
And that explains among other things why you can’t OD on caffeine; you can’t kill yourself with caffeine
because, you can only become stimulated to the extent that your own internal stimulants are working.
So it also limits the amount of stimulation you can get. After about five cups of coffee, you’re not gonna
be… you’re not gonna get any more benefit. You’re about as stimulated as you can be. And in fact if
you drink more, you’re just as likely to go to sleep.
