Since its birth in 1895, cinema has played a major role in francophone
culture and politics. This course initiates students to the exploration of the
relationships between cinema and society. Through comparative study of
francophone films, the course will examine how each film, over time, forms
its own imaginary and aesthetic.
An additional aim of the course is to introduce students to the artistic
context of film production and some of the major trends in cinema today.
Students will also be exposed to the aesthetics forms and reception theories
underpinning imaginative films. This artistic perspective while being placed
alongside competing political, historical and sociological concerns.

Students will be asked to watch a film per week. They will be evaluated on their
written work, oral participation in class and at least one oral presentation.
The course is organized as a seminar. Before each seminar students are expected
to have seen the film assigned and written a two pages paper on it. Each class is a
discussion by students, thus building a specific comparative and collective
knowledge for the class. Participation in this critical discussion will be graded.
Assigned reading texts will be available on reserve or photocopies. Films will be
put on reserve.
